Strange building - Niagara Falls area.

I was recently on a 2 week vacation to the Rochester NY area. While there, I took a day trip over to Niagara Falls. As I was wandering around, I spied this:

It looks abandoned, does anyone know what it is, and has it been explored by anyone?

That is the Ontario Power Company. The building is mothballed and has been explored.

It is listed in the LDB: http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=22907

I'm afraid only full members can view the LDB entry though.

Thats one of the few photos I've ever seen of that building from the American side of the falls.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

So if you were to walk in one of those ducts, where would you go?

WTF indeed.

If this is the building I'm thinking it is, those are outlets. The station syphoned water off the top of the falls and ran it through inlets underground for about a mile, then ran it down through a set of tubes to spin turbines and produce electricity. Those ducts at the bottom, if I'm right, are the outlets for the water to rejoin the river - but I might be wrong, it's been awhile since I read about this.

You'd walk in maybe a few dozen feet and come face to face with the outlet side of the turbines. If anyone's done that yet, there's no pictures in the members area. It'd be an interesting view if anyone could get down there and back out again.

The safety of walking up the outlet penstocks will depend on the water level in the river and the reliability of the valves upstream. The outlets will be partially flooded by the river during high flow periods, such as when major hydro dams downstream aren't gulping down half the river. As for the valves, if one of them happened to leak or come open while you were in the tunnel, you'd die.

Wow, that is a really cool looking building. As someone else said, I am sure it is locked up tight being so close to the Falls. I also see some white storage tanks off to the right of the pic. They look like they are fenced in. I am sure it will be an adventure just trying to get in. Although, being a power station, I am sure there are underground conduits/tunnels that one could find.

As far as I know, Blueshoes and I were the first ones to explore the inside of this place last winter and at the time it was surprisingly easy to get into. Afterwards, I decided to share the details with a few people here and while it might have just been a coincidence, it didn't take long before the place had the locks put down on it. Just something to keep in mind next time you're tempted to disclose information about certain locations you would like to have left accessible for future exploring.

I believe the lock down was not directly due to gossip, but negligence in a related entrance being left unlocked.

WTF indeed.

You're correct. And I think we know which route people took to get in order to get over to that related entrance.

Anyways.. it's understandable that something like that would happen and I'd probably be tempted to do something similar, but still.. I've since learned to not be so eager when it comes to sharing information about places around here, especially ones I plan on re-visiting.
