A closer shot, check out all the bugs on the walls

Holy god, there is no way I could go in there. Just thinking about it makes me nauseous. Those are camel crickets. They would be jumping everywhere when you walked past. They smell terrible if you smash them. Then other camel crickets come up and eat the remains.

Those don't exist in Wisconsin, where I'm from. They shouldn't exist at all. I hate them with a passion.

I wonder if the sight of camel crickets, or the sight of giant Baltimore roaches makes me more ill.. *stroking chin*

Oh.. but where does the tunnel lead? Maybe I could do it.. BLEH

I would run into these creatures quite often when I was an active caver. They would generally swarm just beyond the twilight region of the entrance. Unfortunately for you, I also remember them being present 12 months out of the year. A very short distance into any underground structure the temperature stabilizes to the mean annual temperature of the region, so a winter visit my not spare you from cricket contact. Also, like bats, they are kinds cute once you get used to them.

I useta run into such insects a lot when I was an active spelunker, and, now that I spend some significant time in storm drains seeking and placing extreme geocaches, I have been in intimate contact with all of these critters, and, believe me, they are harmless and you eventually learn to ignore them. Of course, I do often end up finding a few odd itchy bites on my skin later (probably from biting spiders), after the adventure has ended, but they disapear within 3 days with no further ado.

with care,

The best is when you sit down at a restaurant after contact with camel crickets in great numbers, and one leaps out of your hair onto your waitresses hand.

Sue and I have been in that doorway/hallway/room several times in the past couple of weeks, with good lights, of course, as well as entering a half-dzoen other (open) doorways, tunnels and hallways. The hallway beyond the door runs for about 22-25 feet, and then you turn left down another hallway for about 15-20 feet, and then you end up in a (kinda square) room. This room is a dead end -- there no other dooorways or hallways/tunnels leading away from it. Totally dark, so you do need good flashlites or headlamps! Unfortunately, since it is winter, there were no spiders at and near the entrance, but only the cute little crickets in the room at the end.

with care,

That is a long time from now, and this place is mostly a park. I don't think getting arrested or in trouble here would be much of a risk.

Unless you hop the fence and head for the hospital you will be fine.

Speaking of that VA hospital next door to the park: I cannot help but notice that the grounds are very large and there are several roads and a good number of buildings therein that seem to be completely abandoned. I so wish that the whole place were not posted against trespassing! A lot of those abandoned structures would be fun to explore, and would likely be great hiding places for geocaches...

BTW, if you look about 300 feet out from the end of the dock on the grounds of Fort Howard, there is a small stone island -- it looks like it may have held a lightouse many years ago, but it is now an empty stone island. I plan to swim out to it (in my wetsuit and hood of course, with the current water temperature of 41 F) in the next few weeks to explore it.

Yeah, the hospital is closed but people not going to the small clinic that is still open are not allowed on the property. Most of those empty buildings are secured. A theater used to be open but I don't think it is any longer. It is an amazing campus. I would kill for free run of the place for a day.

And yes, that was a light house.

I drove in one day last summer when the clinic was opened, parked nearby and walked all over the place and no one bothered me, was I just lucky?

Buildings have two natural enemies- water, and bears.

Yeah pretty much. There is a guard at the front gate most of the time.
