Bay area people?

Any UE people from the Tampa area? I've always had an affinity for old places, and hate to see them torn down and demolished. Like the old schoolhouse that recently got demolished for the new I4 -> 275 exchange.... a lot was lost there.

Gulfport here.

Tampa seems to have the nice habit of preserving their old buildings, abandoned or otherwise.

There's the Floridan Hotel and Kress building across the street from each other on Cass in downtown, but they're both practically inaccessible.

I've been trying to track down the guy who owns the Floridan, though. I'm hoping that he'd be gracious enough to let some interested parties nose about inside that building. Stuff like that has worked before, on other historically-significant downtown buildings.. which shall remain nameless..

I live in Tampa and would be interested in getting together with others to go exploring. Leave me a message if you have anything in mind.

wesley chapel here.

i had a friend that had been inside that schoolhouse briefly before it was demolished. unfortunately, i was unable to go with him at the time, but i was told that it was sweet. do i ever hate missed opportunities...

unfortunately, the permission route has been tried with the Floridan owner. DownsideuP and i tried in april. no response to date.

i daydream about that building. seriously.
not to mention there seem to be cameras trained on that building from the courthouse across the street. it is a fortress. kress would be cool, but that one is similarly sealed. maas brothers wouldnt be as hard to infiltrate (still extremely difficult due to its location), but i would worry about the structural integrity. you can smell the mold and damp wood from the street. i dont have any kind of affinity for falling through spongy floors.

i have been dying to see the inside of the building on the corner of howard and state st for quite a long time. i couldnt seem to catch the crew that was doing some work on it a while back, i was just going to walk right in and ask permission to take some photos. i was also going to write a nice letter to try asking the owners, but as it turns out, the property is owned by some investment company, who is owned by some other investment company, neither with any contact info, and thus was my tiny bubble burst...

MrMusik? I had a teacher in HS by that name lol. A bit older though.

Anyways, yeah, the downtown buildings are pretty much under lock and key. The floridian, being butted up against the post office and one of the more noteworthy downtown buildings would make it quite difficult. I would assume that they would also be bolted down extra hard due to the transients being prevelant just up the Tampa St.

So far as industrial sites, is there anything down around Hookers Point or Shell Point? I know US Steel used to be somewhere around there, but its been many years since it's closed. There were also some heavy steel in PC, but I know its practically disappeared. The old phosphate plant though...well, that might be interesting. I used to use their free carwash all the time.

Hookers Point is down around the Port Tampa, east of the cruise terminal and Aquarium.

The steel company was actually in plant city, has been closed for over a decade (probably closer to two decades), and has probably by this point been demolished.

The place I was thinking of down around the port was American/Tampa Ship Building (a steinbrenner owned corp) that closed back in 97. It's quite possible that the facilties are still in use by International Ship Repair which are located right at the end of Ybor Channel (the drydocks you see from the Crosstown Exp north of Channelside).

There is a phosphate plant also in Plant City that closed not to long ago, but again, haven't been around that area much recently.

I'm a little hesitant with anything port related, as they went nuts with security after 9/11. Being florida's largest port and a bagillion gallons of gasoline and oil hanging around right across from downtown.... seems like it'd be tough or at least the penalties not as lenient. The other places I used to mosey around in in Plant City and Lakeland have all been renovated, which is good for the building but bad for exploring.

yeah, I'll agree that looking around anywhere near the port would definitely raise some eyebrows. There are a few other, more industrial related things around that I'm trying to do some recon on and check out if at all possible. I'll let you guys know if I find anything interesting.

Yeah.... I talked to my dad re: the port since he's down there a lot. Basically, if you're not supposed to be there, you're a terrorist =/. They have security checkpoints on the roads and other methods of security, but oddly he said they skipped a pretty obvious means of access that I won't divulge here.

Nonetheless, it sounds like a quite unfun time if you get nabbed, which seems pretty likely given what he described.

I am a photographer and a photojournalist that is very interested in getting involved. I live in Lakeland and work in tampa so we all need to get together some time and get exploring. I have some friends that might be interested in this subject also. Let me know what you all think

ISLex:

Lakeland huh? I used to live on the north side around Lake Gibson. I haven't been there in a while, but Florida Southern is fricking awesome to explore around. I'm sure you know where it's at on Lk Hollingsworth. I would park in the rear by the massive concrete library and meander around after hours. There is a starcase on the west side of the very very low science wing (at least it was science when I was there) that enables easy rooftop access. You can even climb up forward onto the ( i beleive) large lecture hall. There is also a decent tunnel network below ground, just be sure to bring your respirators.

Also, the administration offices are cool as well, with colored glass inset in the stonework. Definately something to see during the daylight. The dorms are also pretty old, being original buildings from the turn of the century if I recall. Security is around and about, but not to thick. Just keep your eyes open..as long as you aren't skating or anything of that nature you should be allright.

The place is thick with history and amazing architecture! Frank Llyod Wright sure could build them!

Thats cool, yeah I have lived here all of my life. Actually on Lake Gibson also. I agree with you on Florida Southern, it is a sweet place, I actually have not explored it in a while. I need to plan a new trip there (not like its far).

Hey, i'm Tampa area.
I've just started to get into this. Me and a few friends have gone to a couple places but we're more into the spookier places that have some sort of story behind them. But, since abandoned places are pretty slim to begin with, we'll settle for anything.

Can anyone give me some places to check out in the Brandon/Seffner/South Tampa area?

I am in St. Pete... never done this urban exploring thing but am really intrigued and would like to get into it. I was going to get a friend to go with me and check out that old park in Tampa some time in the next week. I figured it would be a walk in the park (no pun intended) for a beginner and thats how I would like it start unless I am with some people with experience.

While you're down there, wander on over around Tampa Theater/Federal Courthouse and you'll see the Maas, Kress and Hotel Floridian. If it wasn't so miserable today I'd be out and about hitting up an industrial site I found.

Thanks, I will definitely check out those places, but supposedly, as I have read, one or more of those locations are inaccessible. Which one(s) are those? I think I will head down there next friday if weather permits... driving across the howard franklin in this weather is awful.

The Floridan would be extremely difficult to access, the only way I see working is either climbing the highly visible sign in the front (next to the prison-esque post office and the district courthouse), or perhaps the fire escape door can be opened somehow.

In any case, if you go to the top floor of the district courthouse, you can look down and see the damaged Floridan roof.

The Kress building would be simple enough, so long as there's nobody watching.

Floridian is active now, as mentioned in some other threads. The guy that bought it in april has the cash to complete renovations. Last time I was down there, the office was on, demo/construction equipment was inside, and there were vans in the fenced in section behind the building. There were some open windows on the second floor, but its very exposed and in a very watched area.
