|  | | | I've been on the Lorton prison grounds before, having lived in the apartments nearby it (Kenton Crossing)... I've since moved about 10 miles south to Woodbridge, but have been planning a return trip with camera, sans truck and ID.
Security:
I forget the name of the company, but they drive a white Jeep Wrangler on a loop at various times.
Local (Fairfax County) Police make standard patrols there as well.
Stay low and you shouldn't be bothered.
Gear:
Boots and good pants. High grass makes for ticks and such... Though they do mow parts occasionally. Some muddy areas as well... Perhaps gloves. Lots of rust and such around on guard towers. You should be able to get by with your average daily clothes on a good day though.
My previous trip, I just drove on... On Lorton Rd. past the shopping center, there is an entrance for "Laurel Hill Park." This entrance is open sometimes during the day. It is for one of the former prison's athletic fields. I was able to just drive in.
There is also access through some of the area construction sites.
I found that out while scouting for areas to offroad in.
Part over towards Silverbrook Rd and Rt.123 have been turned into a golf center. There may be access over there, but at the cost of more patrols.
Tidbits of info:
Lorton Prison used to be a Nike Missile base back in the Cold War. It was one of three guarding the D.C. area. It is the only one of those three to house Nuclear ordinances.

We've had no problem gaining access, no security or police around and we found an area where theres only one fence to jump instead of 20. Most the ground level doors are either welded or padlocked shut however some of the chains for the padlocked doors have been cut and are just hanging on there so inspect every door. Also most the upper level doors are unlocked so with alittle climbing you can get in anywhere.

haven't seen any more since i went. Wackenhut is there more to let people in and out for construction/other purposes. There main guard seems to be the part under construction since that is where they almost always are. The place hasn't been beat up by vandals yet so they really don't have need or proof of people in and out, only what they read.

As a side note, I had no idea people were into this and it'd be cool to meet some of ya. Maybe could hit up Viva's Pizzeria or the Burger King down the street before or after.

It's 6:45 at night, still light out, and they are in an area with active construction around it and wearing PINK and OTHER COLORS...while walking around the fence part. They see us drive up and they bolt into the building they came out of. Funny thing is while driving up I said "I think I saw someone go into that building". I get up there and there they are.
So some advice.
Don't wear hot pink into abandoned buildings.
Don't hang out in active construction sites when you really look like you don't belong.
Don't be an idiot and run after you know you were seen. Who the hell drives right up next to a prison and doesn't look into it?
If you are going to do these things, either do them at night, or stay away from the fence.

| | | | With the new opening of the Cross County trail, they are saying on the end closer to Lorton road more often now, as the trail passes right through there. Security might be stepped up soon, due to probably more entrances and break ins.

Sunday is Mother's day. I'd never hear the end of it if I skipped out on my stepmother, but earlier in the day should be okay.
Evening seems like a good time as it's easier to see approaching vehicles in the distance with the headlights and whatnot.

Yea well be careful, the guards do come here and that has happened both times I've been there. I've driven by many other times and they are there...just a heads up because I'm over there all the time
