| | | After getting myself thoroughly lost in the Paris catacombs I was led out by french explorers who were kind enough to give me a map of the 14th arrondisement. If anyone happens to be in Paris and needs a map feel free to email me. nathanloop at gmail dot com. It's quite large and needs to be printed on a0, a plotter, or tiled to be of any use. It's also in french and gives inaccurate information about entrances, but amazingly accurate for the tunnels themselves.

| | | Eeeek! How long were you down there before they found you? Also, how old is the map? Or is it the computer map? I could do with a copy of the computer map. I have one from 2002. Drop me an email please so we can chat. Not a PM, I can't get online often.

| | | Catacombs are 300 km long so it's easy to get lost. But there are lots of people down there, especially on the week-end, I'd say in a friday or saturday night, you'll come across someone in less then an hour. but just for the record : going down the catacombs without a map and without having been there before is just plain stupid.

If you are around a large salle you find people, I've definately spent secluded nights there in less popular areas. Luckily this was near petit chateau which is fairly popular. I'd been down before sans map and been OK by sticking to a wall, I was just plain stupid and ventured away from my wall though. What was really dumb was opening a manhole on rue de la procession and getting arrested.

| | | If you went out on La Procession, you were in the 15th arrondissement. And yes, the best time to catch cataphiles is when they're coming out.
41281.jpg (69 kb, 530x822) Here's a map. Honestly, as the catas are very irregular even "holding on to a wall" would be quite an adventure. Not to mention it's pitch black, there's water, argyle and all the other fun stuff, plus the occasional smoke bombs and even maps. Most of them are not accurate...

Depends where on procession. The actual manhole is in the 15th but the tunnel goes and connects to 14th within a few blocks. I was going in, not coming out. I usually exited montparnasse with its tres lourde cover without incident. the first time I did it going in though was the last.

I dont plan on getting arrested but Id like to know, What was it like? I've heard all you have to do is pay a fine, but that may only apply to locals. Please do elaborate.

ok. First, Catacombs are illegal. If you want to officially see them, visit the museum and pay a few Euros to get down there in a small portion of the catas. Now. If you want to go to the "real" catacombs, there are two access methods : 1)access it but the south, via a train tunnel. There is A LOT (A LOT) of security and if you get caught, you will be served with a 172 Euros fine. This is the easiest way to get into the catacombs, with a 25% to 40% rate of getting caught by SCNF (train) cops, especially at night and on Fridays and Saturdays. 2)go down through a man hole. You could also get caught by the "police nationale", which would get you a fine of 24 Euros. thing is the cops have the right to take you to the station and have you wait a few hours just to piss you off. Most people that get caught going down through manholes get caught when then exit, cause by the time the manhole is remove and they peek outside to check out for cops, if cops are around, they are usually standing by looking at you by the time you look up (saying "Police Nationale Bonjour?!!"). Through a manhole, you'll have to do down 5 to 6 levels (and up to come out of course). I strongly recommend gloves as the handles will be slippery, muddy and humid.
Once you're down there. Expect to go through some areas filled with water (from your knee to up to your neck, depending on where and when). The water is quite clean though but it's still water. There are some section full of argyle (REAL argyle, very very VERY slippery but so fun!!!), then, expect to crawl trough some openings.
(still can't believe my ass fitted in there!) You will also need to crawl down and ramp on the floor to get through some passages. Down there, there are tons of human bones, great sculptures done by cataphiles, old civilian shelters, a nazi bunker, a few fountains, a tombstone and all sorts of other interesting things. There is no rats (if you wondered). And of course, it's pitch blacks so bring a frontal, maybe a second flashlight, just in case, tons of batteries and some candles. There is a custom down in the catacombs that once you leave a room, you leave light up candles behind for the next people to come in. Also, there is a custom of lighting up smoke bombs in the catacombs. So if you walk in the catas and suddendly, the place if FULL of smoke and you can't see your own feet, someone set a smoke bomb for you. There are not dangerous, but they will slow you down as you'll have no clue as where you are, what's around you and where you're going. Just sit down and it's gonna go away. Eventually...
It's also good to remember the Parisian cops have a special squad dedicated to the Catacombs. So a "surface" cop cannot go down after you. So, for example, if you're going down to the Catacombs, you've got your feet in the manhole already, just keep on going down and close the manhole as the cops won't be able to go down after you. That's why people get caught when they exit... And of course, try not to exit by a manhole located in front of a bank for example, cause to a normal cop, you'll look like a thief or a terrorist more than a cataphile! ;) [last edit 8/23/2005 11:31 PM by maZe - edited 2 times]

I would probably want to enter on rue de la procession because the train tunnels are so dangerous.

| | | I had the chance to get down there on three different occasions this summer. It truly is one of the craziest thing I've seen. maZe highlighted some very important points but as a foreigner, it's VERY important you carry a valid ID on you. I always had a photocopy of my passport, that's usually enough. But I don't know about the 25-40% chance of getting caught when getting in through the train tunnels... of course, it's the most secured entry point but I heard not that much people actually get caught because most of them get in at 11 PM and get out from 6 in the morning. And yes, it's true that cops won't do nothing when you have a foot in a manhole. A car pulled over when were coming out on a busy street and they only made a weird face. People were rather amused to see 12 dirty persons coming out from a hole on Montparnasse. But please, maZe, upload some of your pictures! http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=20655 [last edit 8/24/2005 11:01 PM by baleze - edited 1 times]

Yeah. good point. I did'nt thought about that cause I ALWAYS have my passport on me when I travel. I sleep with my passport. Always. Plus I have a photocopy of it in another bag I carry with me. Baleze is right - always carry ID, passport and (if you need one) visa.

| | | Yes I could Imagine that having ID is important. Whenever I went out I brought a copy of my passport and my school ID (its not much, but it was enough for getting my travelers checks cashed at the bank) I left my passport at the house I was staying in. Ok I have a few more questions. Could you elaborate on entering? Where exactly is the entrance? I know there are more than one, but what entrance have you had the best luck with?

| | | Well, personally, I can't afford a 172 Euros fine and I don't mind going down manholes. So I always go through manholes. Fine if you get caught entering/exiting by a manhole is 24 Euros. Also, I've seen many of my contacts being lazy and entering through the South train tunnel and getting caught and well - that sucks. Friday night in june this year, 7 people I know tried to come in through the SNCF tunnel. 4 were caught separately. Anyway, I can't afford the 172 Euros so bottom line, I can't afford entering the easy way through the train tunnel. Train tunnel : you enter the train tunnel, then, tadam, in the tunnel, you'll find easy access to the Catacombs. Manhole : gotta remove manhole, go in, close up manhole, then go down the 5-6 levels to get to the catacombs. Don't forget you'll have to lift up the manhole from under it while holding on to the metal rod so you don't fall down the manhole shaft when you'll want to exit it. Some manholes are heavy. This is my access :
Access points change all the time. Cops cement some manholes, while cataphiles un-cement some others...There is a regular rotation... [last edit 8/25/2005 3:14 AM by maZe - edited 2 times]

| | | Ah thanks, that was exactly the information I was looking for. I wasnt quite sure how the entrances worked. I guess before I go i'll ask some local cataphiles to see which manhole is the best, and If I can't get ahold of any, I guess I'll just start lifting up manholes, under cover of darkness of course

| | | By now, 99% of manholes are sealed. There are a few ones you can still open but damn, these things are heavy. About the 172 euros fine, well they're never going to send the damn thing in your country so I see no big deal about getting one. Your tourist status protects you, same thing goes with getting a fine because you didn't pay your train ticket. My best recommendation would be to go with people who are used to get down there. For security reasons yeah, but your first time is going to be quite more enjoyable. These guys know plenty of things about the history of the place and they might show you some spots you would never notice on a map. Speaking about the map, it comes handy only when you're in trouble and basically, you don't want to be in trouble the first times you get down there. I would rely on people rather than on a piece of paper.
