| | | Has anyone been able to tackle on this place? I know myself, getting in here would be like striking gold. Just curious if anyone has made any attempts either possitive or negative. Looking to make my own trip in a few weeks so any feedback would be great. Thanks...

| | | being a baseball fan, i wrote the city of detroit, they forwarded me to tigers management (they still have the rights on the place even though the city pays the bills) they said NO. i drove by on a monday, the commerica park grounds crew was watering the field. the center field door was open and i walked in in full montreal expos regalia, the guys let me walk around the field and dugouts, there is a 24 hour security guard in the place

| | | Unfortunetly i know all to well about Mr. Ilitch and his lack of upkeep on Tiger Staduim..god forbid keeping a treasure like that up to par. Its a shame that the powers that be just sit back and alow him to do that too. There where quiet a few news pieces turing the all star game..but unfortunatly thats all gone now... Anyways once i get myself some time of work im gonna drive down there and see what i can do..evidently security in the place is pretty lax

| | | What are they using it for now? I was just thinking about how cool it'd be to get into Tiger Stadium a few days ago. I'm from Indy. There's Bush Stadium here which has been deserted for quite some time and we venture in there quite regulary. They filmed the movie Eight Men Out there.

| | | I happened to find this on the internet while looking for some other ballparks of the past, namely Busch Stadium.
This webpage has some updated views inside the stadium thanks to a member of the City of Detroit planning department, I believe. Here is the link: http://www.digital...rks.com/Tiger.html Enjoy!

| | | Number years ago when I had a deleivery job, had a drop off at Tiger Staduim one day. This was before the season started in early spring. Made my drop off and asked the shipping guy if it's alright to take a look, so he gave me a grand tour of the place, inculding the broadcasters booth. Wow, was in the same room where Ernie Harwell works! Little while later he had to go and said it's cool for me to walk around. Got into the dugout, ran the bases... Had to check out the locker room but was locked. Too much history here.

That must be why the grounds still look in relatively good condition according to the photographs. I looked at some other old pictures of former ballparks that were still in existence in the past, and you can clearly see that they let the grass die out. As for the interior of the building, it still looks in good condition, I can see that Ilich is probably waiting for the perfect opportunity to develop the property. Because if he wasn't it would have been torn down almost immediately like Veterans, Three Rivers, etc... But I guess the thing was that Veterans, and some of the other cookie cutter stadiums were being demolished early due to the space they occupied in the parking lot of the new ballparks.

| | | tiger stadium hangs on because its not worth enough to demolish, there is a clause in the tigers lease that the stadium cant be used for anything that will compete with commerica, also illich wields so much power that anytime that someone has had a good idea for the place phone calls are not returned, but the upcomming budbowl will compliment the superbowl so its ok

| | | illich does not want ANYTHING done with Tiger Stadium, he wants it to sit there untill something major falls in it because of neglect, that way he can say "Look at me, I am helping keep the city safe by getting rid of this dangerous eyesore". As it stands now it perhaps could be saved but anything put there would be in conflict of the Tigers and he( illich) will not permit that, and he can't tear it down yet as too many people would throw up a stink about wanting to save the old park, but once something falls / collapses (light tower, roof section, ect) then he will have the free hand he needs.

The thing about Illich is that he "owns" most of the Detroit area with the Little Caesar's pizza chain, the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, (Does he own a share in the Pistons?), pretty much when we think of Detroit, it's Automobiles, but he's made a name for himself there. I can see with the amount of investments he's staked in Detroit that the city would listen to him, since he would just take his investments away and the city would be looking for another noble donor to fund some of the city planned projects. It will be interesting to see what will happen for concessions, ticketing, and the other day to day functions for running such an event at Tiger Stadium. Right now it's configured for Baseball, and such would require a little work to get the Football gridirons marked on the field and prep'd for the game. It didn't surprise me that Illich wanted to host something there being Superbowl week. I wonder why he didn't want to host it at Commerica, being that it hosted the Rolling Stones pretty well, other than the incident with the security having to clear the stadium for a 10-100 threat. I guess this was his way of saying to the general public, "See, I do care about this place"...

| | | I know from first hand experience that Illich and Family care nothing for anyone other then themselves. He could careless if he was in Detroit or in any other city in the country, it just so happens that he started here so here he is. I am sure that the only reason he is stayin here is for the fact that he has sunk too much money into "Fox town" to pick up and leave.

I have seen first hand up here in the GTA that his few Little Caesars franchises, one that comes to mind is in Applewood Village Plaza in Mississauga, Ontario; that doesn't seem to be doing quite well. When you also read up on the pizza chain you can see that it has hit hard times with the different menu changes, and whatnot. That probably explains why he hasn't sunk any money into the Tigers in so long. Red Wings are another story.

actually the lions played for many years at briggs, aka tiger, but there was no reconfiguring of the field save for grassing the infield, tiger had one of the biggest fields in the majors although it didnt look it, the bud bowl is totally separate from the superbowl, it is held in the city hosting the superbowl, all events of the budbowl will most likely take place on the field there is actualy no football played, it is a beer and music festival, basically a party on the field at the corner of trumbull and michigan. ty cob would be rolling in his grave. the stands will most likely be off limits. part of the scandal over the maintenance of tiger stadium is the fact 16 telephone lines into the building were being maintained, general cleanup work (meant to be done by the tigers) was not being done, remember the building is city owned but the tigers still maintain it, in the winter of 04-05 the lights stayed on in some parts of the building for 2 weeks, the field lights were lit for 2 nights, my experience with olympic stadium and quebec cheap electrical rates shows it used to cost 4-5 thousand dollars to light the field for a ballgame, now multiply that by 48 hours at detroit electric rates you can see where the citizen outcry was comming from. As for the field at comerica park being used for this event, since the rash of new stadium construction all the new leases in natural grass stadiums, except PNC which is team owned, treat the infield area like it is the secret temple of some cult. no one is allowed out there especially in the winter, so that wont happen, also commerica has a heating system in the field that makes field texture similar to that of wet grits for the better part of the winter, even worse if the drains block. MLB maintains to this day a list of "contingency stadiums" i saw it in 2003 and tiger stadium was still listed, as was candlestick park, bc place , the astrodome and RFK, i assume with recent movements that jack murphy, and olympic stadium are now added to that list.
