actually the lions played for many years at briggs, aka tiger, but there was no reconfiguring of the field save for grassing the infield, tiger had one of the biggest fields in the majors although it didnt look it, the bud bowl is totally separate from the superbowl, it is held in the city hosting the superbowl, all events of the budbowl will most likely take place on the field there is actualy no football played, it is a beer and music festival, basically a party on the field at the corner of trumbull and michigan. ty cob would be rolling in his grave. the stands will most likely be off limits. part of the scandal over the maintenance of tiger stadium is the fact 16 telephone lines into the building were being maintained, general cleanup work (meant to be done by the tigers) was not being done, remember the building is city owned but the tigers still maintain it, in the winter of 04-05 the lights stayed on in some parts of the building for 2 weeks, the field lights were lit for 2 nights, my experience with olympic stadium and quebec cheap electrical rates shows it used to cost 4-5 thousand dollars to light the field for a ballgame, now multiply that by 48 hours at detroit electric rates you can see where the citizen outcry was comming from. As for the field at comerica park being used for this event, since the rash of new stadium construction all the new leases in natural grass stadiums, except PNC which is team owned, treat the infield area like it is the secret temple of some cult. no one is allowed out there especially in the winter, so that wont happen, also commerica has a heating system in the field that makes field texture similar to that of wet grits for the better part of the winter, even worse if the drains block.

MLB maintains to this day a list of "contingency stadiums" i saw it in 2003 and tiger stadium was still listed, as was candlestick park, bc place , the astrodome and RFK, i assume with recent movements that jack murphy, and olympic stadium are now added to that list.

I agree with you 100%. So this BudBowl is more of a tailgate party than anything else. I guess Illich wants to make his name more known with a great international event that everyone knowns as the "Superbowl".

I happen to work for the Blue Jays during the season and the Rogers Ctr all year, and I can say that they do treat the infield like gold. Whenever we had private field baseball games, they would tarp the pitchers mound, cover the bases with tarps sometimes, or they would setup strict rules on how you can play on the infield.

Also I can see why the tax-payers would be a little mad about the lights being on in Tiger Stadium. Illich really should have spent some money maintaining the property. Because when I looked at the pictures of the interior of the stadium, you could see the lack of maintenance that he had done in the past two to three years.

The stands like you said will most likely be off limits, due to the structural damage to the seats. Most tailgate parties on the field only let you cut through the seats down to the field anyways.

tiger stadium is for all intents and purposes illichs territory but its taxpayer owned and funded so basically its his private playground sitting there doing nothing, he negotiates the terms on the maintenance contract and everything. they were saying illich is the one that pushed for tiger stadium to be "maintained" why?? because it was money in his pocket, if tiger stadium was truly abandonned it would give him no revenu

I hope that this Bud Bowl wakes up the public as to what has been happening with this great landmark. There was a lot of great press during the all star game regarding Illich and the lack of maintenance that was going on yet it went know where. This is a landmark that doesnt need to end up like Hudson's.

as a ballpark fan it didnt die quickly enough, walmart simply found an undevelopped site that was more affordable so it was not public outcry that saved it

Most citizens from my experience with old landmarks, usually want to keep it preserved as much as possible. A good example would be turning Maple Leaf Gardens into a Loblaws (Grocery Store Chain). While they might be altering the inside of the Gardens, they will be keeping the place for the most part on the outside intact.

The big thing that kept the tax-payers happy with the deal was that there was going to be a museum full of history from the building.

This is one good way of keeping the place intact.

As a toronto tax payer im still not happy with what they have done with the gardens. I think its a shame with so few rink downtown they are planning to turn the greatest rink in canada into pavement for there store.

But it always has been a privately owned building so there isnt a lot we can do at this point.

I do agree with you about the disappointment about Loblaws turning it into a grocery store. But I am happy to see that at least a part of Toronto history will still be standing.

Very true, and in reality there isnt alot we can do now other then pray loblaws decided it isnt possible before the demo. Im surprised they havent started any of the demo yet. I emailed there customer service in august and they told me that they expected it to start by October at the latest.

Actually, Loblaws has started some demolition inside the building because I have seen some jackhammer equipment being transported inside the building, along with a dumpster full of broken concrete being stored on Wood Street.

I guess they were waiting for the numerous film shoots to be finished before they started any major work inside the building.

There is no indication of when the new store will possibly open. My guess would have to be possibly late next year being the grand opening.

I noticed a Sullvair jackhammer compressor unit there last week parked outside the building on Wood Street. It was sitting there beside a dumpster full of chipped concrete. This would have been in the last couple days.

Sad day in my house when i read that....

From sneak peaks inside i took then they had the production going i saw there where some Gold seats left..and what looked to be some other artifacts. Im guessing that they will be either sold off or Preserved for the Musieum that will be in the store. Either way its sad that MLSE didnt swallow there pride and allow a small arena in the building. Ill be buy soon to take pics of the demo.

I do remember in 1999/2000 when the Leafs moved into the ACC, they had the St. Mike's Majors playing there, as well as the Toronto Rock. As for the Majors they were using it while St. Mike's arena was being renovated. I have read some commentary that the Majors should have moved into the Gardens, as it would have drawn some attention back to the corner of Carlton/Church.

Wasn't Eugene Malnik interested in purchasing the arena quite some time ago, only to find that MLSE (Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd) vetoed the idea of them drumming up potential concerts inside the building.

As for the new store going in there, we can only hope that they preserve at least some of the character inside the building. From what I saw of the front entry on Carlton back in July, it seems like they're keeping the murals on the doors, as well as the old logos on the terazzo floor inside the entry.

You are very right...MLSE didn't want anything to interfere with the ACC. Even thou i honestly cant see a big act going to the Gardens with there older equipment. I couldnt see how the Gardens could fit a large stage now. None the less I didnt own the building and as you said, at least it looks like Lowblows will be preserving much of its history. Im interested in seeing how the plan breaks down...if they got the necessary permits then i wonder if they become public record? This has become the Maple Leaf Gardens thread not the Tiger Stadium thread lol. To this Day MLG is my dream infiltration.
