| | | | for the people who want to take the trip someday.
positive things about that trip:
- Pripyat is very, very nice place and has stuff to photograph for months.
- Feeling in the place is absolutely unique.
- There would be a lot of nice places around.
negative things:
- With the guided tour we had very small amount of time and guide was poking and hurrying us all the time. We saw only small portion of things.
- People had broken and messed most of the places we visited in Pripyat.
- Uncertain feeling after the trip that your testicles will drop anytime soon

| | | | great photos! risky approaching and going in those vehicles though. vehicles, wooden structures, and heavily wooded areas hold radiation in the exclusion zone, especially fire trucks since they tried to fight the fire after the explosion. these are awsome photos, gives a view that other sites do not!

Not a very expensive trip and I'm really tempted to go, but I think that the risk is too big.
I might reconsider once me and my fiancé have some offsprings, but before that I think that the risk that the child will be born disabled is too great.
Might not, but then again it just might happen and I rather would not ruin someones life for pictures from a place, that I can visit, when I'm nearing my own time to go.
Still, great trip and pictures!

However they have been doing sampling and monitoring within the animal population. So far the the only life that seems to be seriously affected by it are frogs and toads. But they in general are very susceptible to genetic mutation. We have quit a few built in checks and balances when it comes to mutations. We are talking long term effects here. At the current levels the human genome could not withstand long term inhabitance. Obviously I dont know the impact of just a limited amount of time but trust me if an area makes a wee froggy grow 8 legs its reason enough for me not to homestead. Once youve buggered your genetic material you might as well kiss your ass goodbye.

We checked from radiation-officials from finland that the trip is safe to take because that one day influence is not too big. Long term affections is the problem. So it's most likely just very very bad luck if I get any side effects because of DNA-mutation. One of the NY-Times guys were there for the 8th time when he was there with us.

Only thing I'm concerned about is that in the vehicle graveyard, the radiation is not been mapped yet and it was forbidden to go near the vehicles.
About the official numbers of radiation in Pripyat:
It can't be determined like that because the radiation is concentrated in certain places. For example the cars in the amusement park and moss around that gave top 800 microroentgens per hour. most of the pripyat were somewhere around 50-200. Normal readings in Finland is something like 15-25 and can be over 100 in some places that contain Radon-gases.
