Is anyone on these boards from the poole/bournemouth/christchurch area?

Non of my friends are interested in UE so i've come here looking for some people to go with. Theres a huge concrete structure on Poole quay that i'd love to check out.

It sucks that the poole power plant was finally demolished (after being abandoned for 15 years) , i only just missed it!!!!

The huge concrete structure on the quay is just left of the chimney thats top right of the picture. It has black rectangular widow frames (all the glass has gone) at the top and window frames all the way up on the front, but no windows at all on the sides of the building.

I tried to find out about it and i *think* it might be an old barcleys bank building but im not 100% its that building that the text was on. I've emailed the poole quay museum so they might have info on the building but no reply as of yet.

Hey Fifi!

Could it be a grain storage building? It's difficult to tell from the pic, but that coupled with the description sounds very similar to a big old grain store place we visited in Oxford a while back! And being on the quay possibly a good place to store prior to export? I dunno? Just clutching at straws!

We're not from the Poole area ourselves, but it sounds pretty interesting! It's a couple hours drive from us, but could warrant the drive if you could dig up a little more info?

Cheers,

JD

I'm 99.9% it is a grain silo because on the poole website its says (about the quay):

'Other potential development includes the redevelopment of the former Grain Silo and a possible expansion of The Quay Thistle Hotel.'

'The redevelopment of the Pottery, the future use of the grain silo site,'

'will park their cars beside the grain silos on Poole quay'

All found from google.

EDIT: I've just remember, some old long gone friends of mine once went there to mess about (not ue) and one climbed to the top. The reason he climbed is because by the 4/5 floor there are no stairs, just a stair railing. So he scaled the railing to the top.

Hm! Yeah, sounds about right, very similar to the one we recently went to see! Do you know of much else derelict in the vicinity? Or within ten miles or so? Would definitely swing the balance as to making a visit back to Poole worth while! Haven't been to Poole since the good ole days of Inter-Dance! LOL! Ah!!

I'd be damn interested in that nuclear plant, but neither google or multimap.co.uk turned up any results for a place called winthrif. got any more info or any links?

Yeah! Hey Wooble! That's what I thought! LOL! Oooh Nuclear Power plant!

It is being decommissioned as we speak, contract started April 2005 and is set to run for 18 months! Judging by the piccies of the decommissioning in progress on this page:

http://www.nukem.co.uk/project_profiles/poco_&_decommissioning_caves_1&2/

It's not somewhere you'd want to be visiting any time real soon!

Here's a page with Overview details of the decommissioning project:

http://www.nukem.co.uk/project_profiles/sghwr_decommissioning/

Cheers,

That is so horribly tempting, but I imagine security there would be up to fort knox levels, and as there are apparently still three partially disassembled reactors on site, I don't think it's somewhere to explore immediately, though the ability to glow in the dark afterwards is tempting.

On the upside, it says complete decommissioning is not due until 2020, so we can wait a while yet.

Well, if anyones going to visit it better get a move on.

'A planning application is being considered for the redevelopment of the grain silo site which will provide 64 flats and a shop. The flats will be subject to a height restriction, not exceeding seven storeys.'

I've got exams tomorrow, thursday and friday and band practice on sat so i'll check it out on sunday.

Thats a long time to wait!! But cant say I relish the 'glow in the dark' bit!

Last time I went near Bornemouth there were a few abandoned buildings in Boscombe which is quite close, thou this was about 3 years ago when I was last at Slinkys so my info must be just a tad out of date by now! :o(

Just been there today and found that

* The ground floor of the main silo building has been filled with rocks, boulders etc... so is 100% in-accessable.
* There is a warehouse slightly infront of it has some concrete slabs piled upon each other to form stairs, so one of the windows is accessable. The whole site has very recently been sprayed with 'Danger: Do not enter' Probably the same day because I could smell the paint quite distinctly.
*Theres a small fence you have to scale to get onto the site (6/7ft) no barbed wire.

I'll go alone with a camera and get a few snaps, not worth traveling down for. Also it's probably infested with bums so if i dont post here in a month or so avenge my death.......please.

Hi Fifi25,

I'm James - 25 & live in Boscombe. None of my mates are particularly into the idea of UE at the moment either and its something I've been wanting to get into for a while.

send me an e-mail if you want to hook up.

James

awesome!

Theres a graffiti artist around poole with the tag 'werd'. The other day, I noticed this tag on the top of the grain silo. It def. wasn't there before, so it IS accessable.

anyhoo, gotta go.

Hey fifi25, I'm from Hampshire and I'm looking to go out with someone to have a little explore someday...

I'd be interested in following you about if we could sort it all out.

Trains and hotels would be my main concern as my budget is kinda low.

Only just registered here, new to UE apart from some forages in abandoned tunnels when I was a nipper!

Someone mentioned grain silos near oxford - could be Cherwell Valley grain silos (my parents met there!) which I believe was also owned by Dalgetty's, as the Poole one was as far as I know.

I'm in Boscombe too Extintor, can't say I've found too much around here in terms of UE really! Although I do know there is a horrible 3' crawler of a drain running around 3 sides of the AFCB stadium and car park.

I've always wanted to have a go at the Bourne stream - must be a good couple of hundred yards of box-section there, going right under pier approach.

Also there is the big (about 9' wide if i remember rightly) concrete box outfall to the right of Boscombe pier. The only thing I can think that this is for is the old mineral water spa and stream that used to run down Boscombe Gardens/Chine before it was modified.

Would be good to find out how to get in there some time!
