Peterborough Area

There's what appear to be two abandoned factories in the Peterborough area. I'm past my UE days now (being all respectable and such) so I can't risk getting caught while trying to preserve any history with my camera. Thus, I offer these possible spots to any eager souls. I've hunted through the forums to see if there was any mention of these spots and couldn't find anything. My apologies if they're already known.

There's what appears to be an abandoned factory in Peterborough behind the new Rona store & Canadian Canoe Museum. There's a number of very well locked doors on the outside and it's signed with Trent Security stickers (the major monitoring company for the area). Likewise, it's surrounded by several fences too with residental houses backing on one side and two busy parking lots/roads on the other sides.

There's also what looks like an abandoned factory/warehouse in Omemee (about 20 minutes NW of Peterborough on Highway 7). It too is right on the main road with little to no cover anywhere around - surrounded by residential housing too.

Good luck.
G.

Hmm. I know someone who works for Securitas but I don't think he's ever put up in Lakefield... However, it could be a great way to get a "guided" (or at least fully unescorted) tour one day if he got sent there. Where abouts is the cement factory?

I have been in the cement factory, it is mainly just a shell, but being such an imposing structure among houses and small businesses in such a small community draws the raff and the security is mainly there to keep people from hurting themselves. I did enjoy my exploration of the cement factory though; I had never been in one and the vastness of the place was amazing. It was just room after room, it had vaults and low concrete tunnels and giant concrete bowls several very high un-railed walkways and more turns and hiding spots than I could count. It was a lot of fun imagining the hulking iron engines and cogwheels actually doing something in the past.

As for the factory behind the canoe museum, if I am thinking of the right one, it is not abandon, it is used as a storage facility for the Canoe Museum. One of my History Professors at Trent University was/is an executive on the museum board and for a class research trip once aloud us to enter this facility. Of course, I ignored the several canoes and explored the huge building. It was a nice place, kind of boring though.

I hear that the old King George public school is going to be knocked down to build a new Y.M.C.A. It appears to be empty from the outside. The grass is still cut on the property to make it look nice and some people from the Day Care next door park there as well.

I was in Lakefield on monday, and did a quick visual of the concrete factory. It looks to me like Savage Arms is using the property surrounding it, a very active place. The fence that surrounded the perimeter of the plant was filled with people and vehicles.

Are you sure that the school is King George. I have not been in Peterborough in quite some time but i think the school might be King Edward. I could be wrong.

I think that you are right about this, thanks for the correction. Do you know the exact status of this building?

The building, the King Edward Public School, is being prepped for demolition shortly. However, it's being used by the Peterborough Fire Department for training purposes right now. There was an article in one of the local rags about it. Apparently, the FD has set up each of the classrooms as different training scenario rooms - one's a cave in, one's a tangled mass of wires... things like that. I'd put the building down as an extreme risk because of that. The FD is going to clear out shortly though, and I'm not sure when exactly it's set for demo.

Yes, Savage Arms does occupy a portion of the property. They make ammunition. Could they have chosen a better name?

The building in Omemee is the old Regal Stationary envelope factory that closed down some time ago.

The building behind the canoe museum indeed is the storage area for the canoes not on display in the main museum.

I believe the school in question is already a pile of rubble on the ground.

At one time the building or buildings in and around the canoe museum were part of the Outboard Marine factory. A very big employer in peterborough next to quaker oats and CGE. Speaking of CGE if that place ever closes down it will be the gem of central ontario for exploration, but i hope for the sake of the employees it isnt anytime soon

This location has possibly the best photos of any entry in the DB (assuming we're talking about the same site).

That would be fun. Just take plenty of precautions for safety. I heard, according to a 2000 study I believe, if you wanted to reclaim the land it's on, you'd have to remove the first 20 feet of earth. And that's just 2000 data.

I've heard tell of a small tunnel system underneath too. Long forgotten, so it would seem.

It all kind of went down hill from there.

I am from Lakefield. It's in the peterborough area. I have been in the cement factory, it burnt down a long time ago, and people have tried numerous times to keep people out. Just recently they painted over all of the graffiti at the top, so some people i know had to go redo their art. PS. We are big fans of the red hot chilli peppers.
