I think it's up to the person paying for the photo to decide if they are willing to pay for a poster or print, and I think it's up to the person who took the photo if they are willing to sell a print.

It doesn't matter whether or not the photo in question is "good" or not.

-av

Exactly. Well said. I'd pay for a typical Turbozutek "wearing random object on head" picture. Not exactly art, but I'd get a laugh out of it every day.
In addition, I never said "documentation" style pics had to "suck". It kind of falls into three or four tiers; Garbage shots with no thought, marginal documentary style shots, well done documentation shots, and finally; artsy fartsy shots that can be done at a later date when someone has the time and ambition to ruin a fun adventure
by dicking around with the camera for a half an hour in order to shoot a picture of a busted
pane of glass or an old chair. Great, it's an old chair; wow, spooky. Spooky and cliche'.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

I think Kowalski worded my opinion on this pretty well. This is something UER doesn't need... opening up a different, un-affiliated with UER urban exploration hi-res commercial photography site is fine however I don't think this is for UER.

I don't think its "dicking" around. If I have the time, or if I know that the place won't be there much longer (e.g. Fostoria Glass), then I will take extra considerations and time for each photo. If there is another person with me taking photos, I will take often times, different ones or from different angles. You'd be suprised at what sells in the real world.

I have had people come up to me and say "Wow, I am suprised at the amount of contrast that you produced in such a simple object!" The said object? A chair in an abandoned hospital; original photo was color but I had converted it into black and white and increased the curves a bit to give it a more stark feeling.

Likewise, a photo of a light switch along a wall with peeling layers of paint has provided me many great comments as well. I enlarged it and showed it to a cafe owner and he purchased one for the wall suprisingly. I thought it was nothing out of the ordinary -- just a light switch with one of those 1970's "save and conserve" stickers on it with peeling paint all around.

Go figure.

Perhaps there is some wisdom in this. Maybe it could be set up as a separate linked site. That might allow for fun things like new "photo" user profiles. It could be a general "proceeds go to further the UE community" type of thing. If AV gets more than he needs to run UER it could be passed on to another site or organization. Etc Etc... Just throwing out ideas here.

All you gotta do is ask - I'll send you a high res. We can cut out the UER middleman.

I was just using you as an example; but I always got a kick out of a couple of shots; the one where you and Del are running a floor polishing machine while wearing some god awful hat you found somewhere. Two; You and l forget who wearing some jumpsuits (I think this was the Irvine police station.
3) The photoshop of you riding that toy horse with the ten gallon cowboy hat, that gets me every time.
Off topic yes, but on topic because this is the type of shit I'd gladly pay for even though it is not an "Art" shot. I think those who say that photography and UE are not intertwined have another thing coming. If anything, UE and "the photographic arts" have nothing in common (unless you want them to). If I had to look at an LDB location with nothing but shots of peeling paint and chairs and crap, I'd shoot myself in the head. Sometimes it looks good, but usually it looks cliche'. I want the pics to tell a story, a story of an adventure , with friends, hombres, e.t.c.. I liked the old Scotland LDB shots because it ALWAYS included people, they were part of the story. I too can take pictures of paint and light switches, and rest assured they would look great, but as Matt said "Uer shouldn't become a phytography site".
Recently I met up with INA and Duffgirl and I was surprised at how they "hustled out" of my camera range, usually saying "sorry". Sorry for what? I've been here a million times, taken all the artistic shots I need, now I want people to be involved!

I think this is a fun idea as I've said before; there are plenty of "people" shots on here that I'd love to grab. It'd make someones day to receive a PM " Pic # 123343 has been requested as a full res image."

The people are what makes the picture, not some old crap that has been done one thousand times before.

I leave you with one of my "crappy " shots.

1/4 second handheld while freezing my ass off, no photoshoperry.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it art boy! No bumping contrast, no Histogram adjustment, I left it just as I saw it; it's what explorings all about. You know what you can do with your sewer pipe pictures.

There's a pretty simple and in place solution for Kowalski's issue - just don't make any of your pictures available for sale.

The idea here isn't to sell art, the idea here is to tap the resources of this site to generate some revenue to help Av keep the lights on.

Coming in with an elitist attitude and ridiculing the photos other people post is pretty obnoxious. Maybe my photos aren't as nice as yours. Remind me never to go exploring with you, okay, I don't have time to sit around for 45 minutes while you setup a shot, I'd rather be exploring.

Quite a few people have expressed concern over resolution and print size/quality. Maybe AV or someone with coding experience can comment on this, but I'm thinking it wouldn't be too hard to code a feature that recognises the resolution of the photo and sais "maximum print size X by X." On top of that it might be possible to pass on the information recorded with the photo saying or at least the ISO and camera type so the purchaser could have an idea of the quality of the photo.

Just a few more ideas.

Oh Chainsaw, I love you too, but until you explore with me I don't see how you can have any idea how long it takes me to shoot most of my shots. I mean, I've seen Jester -- JESTER -- spend more time taking a photo than I usually do. And if you talk to the people who do explore with me, they'll tell you that for me the adventure does usually come first, and then the photos. Both are important, and yeah, people have to wait for me from time to time while I do some bracketing, but it's worth it.

The idea here isn't to sell art, the idea here is to tap the resources of this site to generate some revenue to help Av keep the lights on.

Then forgive me for finding the urban exploration equivalent of ringtones a little less than compelling. It's the last I'll say on the matter.

I think you're thinking of the time I took 20 pictures of that lock laying on the ground... if not it was probably just my incompetance at working my photography machine, certainly wasn't me getting a good picture, I can prove that with my collection of photos.

As much as I like the possibilities that this idea presents, I don't think it's worth it.

I estimate it would take at least 5-10 hours of coding to make a semi-automated system to do something like this, with an additional 30 minutes per image of my personal time being spent setting it up every time someone has a new image to sell.

And for what? A $1 commission on a $20 poster? Or, if we go the route where UER simply charges a service fee of $1 or 50c, it would be even more complicated.

It's just not worth my time and effort. It'd have to bring in a lot more money for it to be worth it.

So, if you want a high-res of an image, simply send a message to the photographer and ask nicely. If you want a poster, ask him/her to set up a store so you can buy one. If that photographer is so inclined, they are free to send a few bucks to UER for hosting the photos that got people interested in buying, or whatever.

So that's my decision.

Oh, so I did.

If this is what you'd like to turn your site into AV, a photo gallery for profit then by all means do it.

Adding a gallery or the ability to purchase photos on this site would not instantly turn UER into a whole different site, into a sole photo gallery for profit as miyuki said.

Like I said in my post, constructive criticism is the key. Simply bashing the idea, like Miyuki did, solves nothing.
