There has been discussion of this a while ago, but things may have changed since then. Ask Darkness and that other guy from ASU. They'd have a good tale for you

The closest I have ever gotten caught was the night me and some friends were going on an explore of some of the old Studebaker complex up here (mentioned in a previous thread) and walked into the middle of an inter-agency drug bust.

we used to explore this old house in my town all the time...
a few people went in that were not really friends with us and they got caught twice!
the only time that we almost got caught was when we were inside and a friend who was on the roof yelled that cops had come...we blew out all our candles and many of us started going out the roof window...luckily and for unknown reasons the cops left...went to the house next door and then left

Not yet. But I've had close calls such as coming out of a building at 4:00 am while the streetlights are on and security was making their rounds. I had to get down really low so they couldn't see me. Which is a difficult thing to do since I was about 10 feet off the ground on a staircase in plain sight. I had to shuffle past the razor wire surrounding the stairs in a hurry.

My brother and I got nabbed by a security guard at the local hospital when we were wandering the halls... a security guard who happened to be a friend of the family. He showed us the morgue, and then the exit.

The write-up should be in an older thread, but I'm to lazy to check.

It was Friday night, having nothing better to do, Expedition NYC decided to return to Hellgate Bridge, in Astoria Queens. I myself, wanted to take better photographs than last time (it rained last visit), and try to see if I can get up the actual bridge itself.
There were 5 of us. We were being unusually loud, and this time, we took a rather long walk there. There were rocks along the tracks, and we were constantly accidently kicking them, maybe some off the tracks into the streets below.
I was taking as many pictures I could, with flash. This probably caught quite some attention from any onlookers from below. Additionally, we found a stuffed bumble bee on the tracks, that when squeezed played a tune. It was loud like hell.

We got to the bridge, and explored the tower. The entire expedition was seemingly safe, it was until we exited the tower to look for catwalks up to the bridge itself. I heard loud, running footsteps and yelling.

Me and Vin were positioned on one side of a large support column, the other 3 were on the other side. We didn't know what was going on when the noise began. At first, I thought an encounter with a graffiti artist, or some other kids had been made. We had previously came and encountered a graffiti artist. I jumped over the ledge to look at the others, and suddenly, a bright light was being shone in my face. "PUT YOUR FUCKING HANDS UP! PUT YOUR FUCKING HANDS UP!"

The moment I heard those words, I knew were busted. Vin, who was maybe 4 feet besides me, thought it was a joke and stood still, trying to absorb the situation in. "PUT YOUR FUCKING HANDS UP NOW", the cop screamed repeatedly, until Vin finally did. "GET THE FUCK DOWN! GET ON THE FUCKING FLOOR FUCKING NOW!"

I am not exaggerating, they did swear a lot. We lied down on the ground, while they cuffed us, sat us against the wall while they radioed their fellow pigs to come pick us up. They questioned us, and Wriston said, "We're urban explorers", while Wagner and Sean tried a softer approach, "We're... um... taking pictures for photography class.", and I muttered, "Researching history of the bridge", all at the same time. This undoubtly gave the impression that we were all scrambling to find a good excuse. They searched us and found no spraypaint or drugs. Luckily, Sean smoked that blunt he had on top of the tower, or else I wouldn't know what would've happened to us. Eventually, they walked us off the bridge and drove us back to the precient, where we found out, fortunately, that we weren't being put through the system, and just given a summons. I'm just glad that they didn't confiscated or delete my pictures. They are here:

Busted for what, and in what jurisdiction? We have a bit of a range in this odd little hobby, from wandering around cities in suspect but legal ways to entering live military installations.

Never been caught...oh wait thats a lie When i was 12 were were in a abondend armory. One kid I was with threw somthing like a idiot, there were houses nearby and someone reported gunshots. we saw the cop pull up and went the other way and out the roof. All of us were on the ground waiting for this one girl to get down the building(we wouldent leave anyone behind) and the cop comes around the building. They just called my parents to pick me up.
The scariest time was when we were at Kings Park. We had parked in the neighbor hood and someone musta seen us gettin outa the car or somthing. We had just gotten outa the mourge and we see headlights goin by, there are patrols so normaly this wouldent be a big deal, but we ALL got a really BAD feeling so we headed for the exit, between all the commotion we couldent find the right way for a min, the we did and got down into the tunnels and booked torwards our exit. After a quick look around outside we ran for it. When we got the the edge of the property the big gates (that are never open) were open. We all ran for our cars and booked. As we were driving down the road we see the patty wagon comin around the corner it did a dead stop as soon as he saw my car and shined his light on me, we just kept goin calmly down the road, as soon as we turned the corner I booked (gotta loke awd turbo) The other people that were with us had the same thing happen, he also had a awd turbo car so he booked too. After it was all sid and done and my lungs stopped hurtinf from all the running it was actualy a cool rush

I thought it was a security guard that had followed me, damn near gave me a heart attack. He just smiled and said "don't worry, I've seen stranger things" and kept walking. Psh, I'M strange?? what kinda ghoul takes walks in the woods at 3 AM??

Good questions. Here's food for thought; the state of Ohio has several laws that may or may not affect the urban explorer doin' his or her thing there. Every state is a bit different, not to mention Canada of course, but this list is rather exhaustive and may provide some background. I've never actually been caught, but have had a few close calls. Once, when we were trying to find an entrance to the U of MN steam tunnels a security monitor walked right past an open manhole cover. I mean, this was within 2 feet of it and it was obvious. I'm not sure why he didn't do anything about it.

http://www.frozencrystal.com/places/images/esteam/gopherway.jpg

Also, once took a trip to Cambridge, MN to check out the old asylum there. Pulled into the parking lot of a baseball field relatively near the asylum at around 1am. We were just getting some gear ready when a cop pulled up, shining her brights right at us. We had stories and everything set and planned out should we get caught in the asylum, but we never thought of what to say if we got caught before we even did anything illegal. She got out of her car and the following dialogue commenced:

Cop - What are you doing here?
Me - Uh...parking here for a bit
Cop - Where are you from?
Me - We're from minneapolis
Phoenix - Well, I'm from chicago
Cop - why are you in Cambridge?
Me - uh...we are just passing through..
Cop - Passing through to where?
Me - uh..up north..
Cop - where up north?
Me - umm....I don't know....
Cop - well, I just want to make sure you guys aren't trying to get into the old asylum buildings. We've had a report of two guys trying to get in. I'm going to have to ask you guys to leave immediately.

Half of me wanted to congratulate her for figuring out our intentions so easily, before we even got near the asylum! Anyway, turns out that Phoenix looked just like another guy they stopped earlier. We just had poor timing. Naturally, we complied and felt like complete idiots for not thinking of a better story. Or any story for that matter. Now I always try to consider all possibilities and exactly what I will say before I explore any place.

Another time we were exploring a (we thought) empty campus building late at night. It was curious that the 3rd floor lights were on. We were very cautious but didn't see or hear anyone. Then someone I was with wandered into the bathroom and startled some guy in there who sounded like he had really bad diarrhea and we ran out of the place before he could come out!
