But I'm done with this thread, there have been 3 now, and they all end the same, some people say it's fine, and some say it's not, and it will not be resolved. I'll wear a respirator when appropriate...

Let's reiterate... since it's obvious that asbestos can be detected, how do those who do the work in detecting it come up with their answers?
Now, I do know that solid materials that may or may not be composed of asbestos are sometimes submitted to a scanning electron miscrope for confirmation. However, there are also data about the concentration levels of asbestos in the air. Since you can't put the atmosphere in a microscope, does anybody know what methods are used to determine airborne concentrations? Furthermore, where might one find more information on the subject (I'll do the reading and report back if yall can tell me where the reading is) so that we can move beyond the world of "this is how I lead my life so nyah."

there are machines to pull in air and collect it, I believe, collecting the particles on a filter, which you then take to be analyzed...no prices were listed, but it would have to have been at least a few hundred min. by the looks of it... http://www.afcintl.com/t100.htm at least thats what the sales site for the machines said... but i'm probably wrong, but hey, thats just how I live my life, so nyah. wait... I'm not Lago1, thats not what I'd say. I'd say "go get some chunks of asbestos, grind them up realllly fine, and breathe deeply..."

Keep in mind that not all buildings that have asbestos in the walls have it in the air. Sometimes it's bagged and sealed, so there's none there. The problem is when it's not bagged.

|  | | | Asbestos... the only safe way to handle it is soaking wet and double bagged. If you even suspect an asbestos hazard WEAR A MASK! Don't be an idiot and kill yourself for the short term thrill of UE'ing. I have dealt with hazardous materials for almost a decade now, don't be stupid. Asbestos in any form is bad/deadly to and for you. Ohh, there is no way outside of a laboratory to detect asbestos. Unless, of course, the building is sealed and marked DANGER - ASBESTOS - KEEP OUT! In that case, I would pay attention to the sign...
