| | | Ok, its freakin freezing cold! and i dont want to stop exploring for all the winter. So lets be clever and exchange our idea and tricks to explore in winter! Personnaly i bought some hand warmer ( litle bags that get warm when squeezed ) its a good item , but the one i got are not quite hot enough , i want something more hardcore that get hot for real not just lilte warm. Anybody know a good brand and where to get it cheap? ( the one i bougth is Coghlan"s brand Hand Warmer at army surplus )
Anybody know a good way for keeping your toes from freezing when wearing steel cap boots ?

| | | Terro, those hand warmers get stale over time. If they were surplus you might want to try buying something newer. Also, Wal-mart sells socks that run on 9volt batteries. A good pair of thermals and a nice outer layer should provide all the protection you need from the elements. My typical winter outfit for UE is a pair of thermals, a cotton t-shirt and my windbreaker with a pair of old utility pants. I've got an old army trench coat with rabbit fur liner and a nice hat for topside stuff, but the coat stays in the truck if we're going underground. I don't think Minnesota is indicitive of most areas as far as UE is concerned; I'm planing on spending most of the winter in the warmth of the underground. Any topside locations that have to be explored before spring can wait for a warmer day.

| | | Three layers of clothing (you can shed layers if you get hot), good insulated leather gloves (a year or two old so its no biggie when they get trashed), insulated boots, a black face mask that can be worn as a hat too, wind breaker with hood. If going in water areas I bring something to keep dry, frostbite sucks.

| | | A note on the ski masks: It's generally a bad idea to stroll around town wearing one, they tend to scare people even when you're not jumping a barbed wire fence .

| | | Don't forget to wear layers; any strenuous activity will raise the core temperature. You'll want some sort of pack to toss unneeded layers in. If you are a photographer, you'll want some shooting gloves; they have the "peel off " trigger finger, so you don't have to remove the entire glove. And yes those hand warmers are great. I would ditch the combat boots; they conduct heat away from the feet like crazy. If you want to go nuts, buy a pair of "mickey mouse " boots, like the ones airborne troops wear (the ones with the "exhaust valve" built in). I have a pair of Sorels I break out once a year.

| | | In terms of footwear, I like waterproofed and insulated hiking boots. Kamik makes some nice ones that are cheap and good. They're durable and comfortable, so they're good for UE, but they're warm and waterproof and suitable for wearing in winter too.

| | | I wear my snowboarding boots.... They are very warm and lace all the way up my shin so there is more support. Also they are 100x lighter than any other boot out there. Great traction as well!

| | | Once again; layers; If you are overly active, leave the Carhart jumpsuit at home or in yourpack for when you are sedentary. When I raced XC ski, we used to do races in 0 degrees F wearing what amounts to a "superhero" suit. By the end of the race you would be hot; the steam would rise off your body The second consideration is camera equipment; you're "latest greatest" digicam will die quickly in the cold, so plan on carrying it close to your body, and bring extra batts. I haven't found that problem with lighting. For photography, as I said , find the gloves that have the "retractable finger". Get a third layer with MAD pockets (shell)! A shell with no pockets means you are reaching for you pack every ten minutes. Carhaart makes that as well. I got some "test " merch from Aeropostale, and it turned out to be the perfect Cold weather UE jacket! In the summer, I don't know what to do with myself! (no pockets), but it's just a shell. Get a hat; you may look goofy, but a huge percentage of heat is lost through the head. If your location requires rapid movement, get a head band, it keeps your noggin warm but lets off the steam. Don't forget the base layer: some sort of polypro long johns; forget cotton; Sure they are warm when dry, buy sweat a little and you'll be a popsicle. As I said , we used to race in nothing but a layer of Helly Hansen long Johns and a LYcra skin suit; We were warm because of the level of activity and staying dry! Put on that cotton underwear and I don't care what you wear, you will either be exceedingly hot or chilled to the bone because of the accumulation of moisture.

| | | The number one piece of winter equipment for me is a touque. Gloves and long underwear are nice too, but if I had to choose one it'd be the touque. Nothing beats a big fat touque on a cold winters day, except maybe some hot chocolate... with whipped cream, and chocolate syrup.... a couple shots of bailey's

| | | In the United States, this type of hat is sometimes referred to as a "ski hat."
|
This would explain it. Also, it's not in the dictionary under that spelling. Only as tuque. I learned a new word today!

| | | Skip the steel toed boots, get compound toed boots, the same protection but lighter, warmer and non-magnetic. I love mine. If you're a drainer and wear big rubber boots get a pair that's a size or two too big and wear paddling socks underneath. Ohhhhh the comfort!

| | | when i go UEing in the winter i usually only do drains. i feel more comfortable in a drain knowing all the water is frozen and is gonna stay that way. that being said i usually wear some nice thick gloves. my trench coat and some heavy pants. i usually dont need much more because i find it actually gets pretty warm in the drains. | | | If your hands get cold, wear a pair of poly liners like these here and a pair of mittens over them. Mittens are the warmest things for your hands ever. Inconvenient at times, yes, but its better than losing feeling in your fingers. If mittens over liners still dont work, get one of those heat packs to float around in the mitten. As for feet, from a snowboarder and hiker point of view, get a pair of liners for your feet as well and put heavy wool socks on over them. The liners wisk sweat off your feet and the wool keeps them warm as hell. Also, if you step in water or something soaks through your boot, the socks will keep relatively warm and dry. Cotton is the kiss of death once it gets wet and cold.
