I would actually recomnend against wearing a wool sock. Wool is very thick, which makes it almost impossible to wear regular footwear with them. I know for a fact my normal UE boots wouldn't fit if i wore wool socks. My skiboots wouldn't fit, and I think my waders would be a bit on the tight side. Wool also soaks up water, even if it stays warm afterwards. This means alot more added weight, and alot more fatigue for your leg musscles.

There are two recomendations I would make. The first is a pair of army issue wool socks witha poly liner, or the better and more expensive wool/poly blends. These are generally lighter and thinner then the normal consumer version. With a decent boot, they offer a nice balance between weight and protection from the cold. These things tend to itch, especially the 100% wool variety. Make sure your liners will be high enough to roll down over the top to prevent chaffing your shin.

Another option worth looking into is a pair of Gortex water socks. They tend to be a bit expensive for socks - a cheap pair is probably 2x a decent pair of wool socks. But these things are light! I've got a pair designed for ski boots, and it makes a hell of a difference. Climbing ladders with thick socks makes me nervous about my footing. If you wanna save money, I've seen cheap versions that use some other synthetic that doesn't breath like gortex. Good if you don't sweat much, but they might get a bit swampy with time.

It gets pretty cold out where I live and it doesn't stop me from exploring. Last time I explored it was 4F and with windchill it was around -14F (I don't know what that is in celsius). Now I don't have much for money at all so I have to go the cheap route when it comes to staying warm. I also usually do abandonded buildings and I never tunnel.
I wear the following, 1 or 2 tshirts, a sweatshirt/hoodie (optional) a cheap target rip off of a Flight Jacket that has lots of pockets and is light and warm. if it's real cold I wear some long underwear, and I wear cheap "Payless" combat style boots with 1 or 2 pairs of cotton socks. I always wear a hat (beanie in US, touque in CA) and I cary a handerchief that can double as a thin mask to cover my face when the wind kicks up. This stuff along with a pair of cotton gloves and a pair of work gloves I can put on over those keeps me pretty warm and it all cost close to nothing. I can't afford gortex socks, or electric socks, or designer brand outer shells and synthetic long johns so I just go the good and cheap way.
ALso layers are a great idea, but make sure to bring a pack or something to keep the stuff in when you shed the layers.

What I would recommend for winter urban exploring is having some military-grade acrylic commando shirts (2 layers, about 20-30 bucks at your local kit-shop in London) I have a black micro fibre jacket (dosen't cut wind well but does not shine at all if light is put to it.) and some winter urban combat pants (very warm, the white, grey, and black camo) And some standard issue combat boots (these will cost you 'round 30-40 bucks, but they have soft rubber soles and are very quiet.) And finally, some black leather gloves, any will do really.

Personnaly i bought some hand warmer ( litle bags that get warm when squeezed )
its a good item , but the one i got are not quite hot enough , i want something more hardcore that get hot for real not just lilte warm.
Anybody know a good brand and where to get it cheap?

( the one i bougth is Coghlan"s brand Hand Warmer at army surplus )

Anybody know a good way for keeping your toes from freezing when wearing steel cap boots ?

Yeah, insulated liners.

I noticed with the hand warmer things that sometimes they get too hot, which sucks. Also, I hate gloves with fingers when I have my camera. Because of this, I have two pairs of gloves. One pair is the cheap stretchy kind you get at the dollar store, with the very tips of the fingers cut off. The other kind are leather motorcycle gloves. I put the hand warmer pack in between the two. Works very well. Because the leather gloves are designed to let you move your hand around pretty freely, it's a lot less restrictive than you would think.

Best gloves ever: Seal Skinz. They'll run you around USD $40 a pair, but I'm still using mine even though they're half dead. (I'm buying a new pair very soon)

Durable, waterproof, warm, fairly thin, so you can still manipulate fine objects, get the ones with the grip dots and you get very good grip.. What else can a glove possibly do to be better? I swear by them; I bought my first pair when I was still cycling competitively and *nothing* else could keep my hands warm and I hate frostbite.

I usually go out wearing my friend's ape suit. Sure, I may look like an ape, and I may not be able to run from the cops, but man, I get some good laughs.

Vampire costumes are also a good idea. Since vampires tranditionally inhabit dark places, people will just assume that you just live in whatever dark structure you are exploring.

But seriously, electric socks are good. I also wear an electric jock to keep my junk warm.

On a slightly different tangent, does anyone know of something for covering tracks in the snow. I know its a long shot, but I'm afraid to scout steam tunnels until the spring cause I think my tracks will give me away, and security will be tightened.

Pick a day when it´s snowing heavily, and your tracks are covered in few moments.

Other old but slow trick is to have spruce branch to wipe them away. Of course you cant completely wipe them, but at least a little. And wiping the tracks might make them look older than they are.

Acquire a nice Emergency Blanket from the local K-Mart, and you can sew some nice socks, undershirts, and thermal type pants from it. It's a good method to stay warm in just about any situation.
