Basically: the tools you really need are all in your head. I'd bring these along:

- Common Sense
- Good sense of 3D-spaces (don't get lost)
- Watchful eye
- Social Engeneering skills (in case of a run-in with someone).

There are some "real" tools I'd suggest and basically are the basic equipment in any UE situation.

- Good, sturdy boots (These are a must)
- Flashlight
- Small water bottle and some food (in dusty environments you'll get dried out very quick, and thus irritated, which might cause you to lose your common sense, thus becoming a danger to yourself and possibly others)
- Camera (not only for shooting, but also as a prop)
- Cell phone

I'd definately leave these at home:

- All you know about movies and ninja's
- Any knives and tools that you would not usually wear on your belt
- Binoculars are quite useless and heavy
- Everything that makes you look like a terrorist. That includes anything to make you look stealthy.

People have been put in jail for walking on a public street with less terroristic looking stuff with them than you suggested. (We won't repeat the story here, but search for "landmark six").

And for the good mindset there are three easy steps:

  • First know and understand the UE motto:

"Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints"

  • Then know that UE is "recreational trespassing" and UEers tend to break no law at all except for the trespass law. UE people in Scotland even break no laws at all!

  • Then go read about the mindset of the average urban explorer. I'd especially reccommend (and in this order) the "An attempt at explaining exploration to the public", "Hey" and "A New Definition of UE" articles: the first two are a general introduction to UE, and the last is a more advanced review on the psycology of UE.

Also, go take a look in the encyclopedia.

Try to take someone with you on your first few trips. An experienced UE-er might show you what real UE is, and if you find him boring because he's taking too many photographs of flakey walls, then maybe this might not be the hobby for you.

And at last: Trust your mind. If it tells you should or shouldn't do something, *trust it*. This has saved many of us from being caught or having fallen to death.

Through carefull study of our local laws (I would suggest again that anyone serious about UE know their local laws pertaining to UE) we have found that despite exploring hundreds of locations over a peroid of many years with dozens of toher explorers, we have never ever commited B&E (despite some doing things that most would think is B&E) and we have trespassed on only rare occaisions.

Many times you may think you are tresspassing and you may not be.

Here to be trespass you must pass a sign that specifically says "No tresspassing". OR you must be asked to leave by an agent of the owner. If you leave right away you have commited no crime.

Most Abandons here have no such signs, they are assumed to be public places until you are told otherwsie by the owner of the site or his agent. Even the police cannot tell you to leave.

This applies to non-dwellings, I do not know the laws on dweloings since I never explore a place where people are legally and actively living.

But if you are at the mall here, open a door in a back hallway and find yourself in the tunnels and never passed a sign, you have done nothing wrong. Even if security haslses you, as long as you leave as soon as they ask you, you have done nothing illegal and they cannot hold you in any way.

If you ever come to Calgary then email [email protected] and you'll be made welcome, taken to locations and given free accommodation. We'll help save you the $$$ you spend on the flight over here :)

I've done the vast majority of my UE without anything more fancy than normal cloths, cheap waterproof torch and a small digicam.

Optional extras in order of most taken are; backpack, drink, food, GPS reciver (purely because I have one and like to mark off locations), spare batteries, video camera. On some explorations, car, passport, plane tickets.

I don't think I've ever taken any knife with me UEing ever. I've never once had a use for one. I've never worn camo cloths, that just draws attention. Fireworks, no need for them. I like my hearing the way it is. Oh, but I did once take some with the specific aim of filming them going off but that was not really UE.

Knives, bolties, cutting tools and 'keys to the city' are not normally required. As many people have already said, they cause trouble. It is FAR BETTER to simply look for existing entry points to abandoned buildings, or wait until an entry point is created.

Yes, I had a laugh at the "I don't plan on getting caught" line. Ahh, outhful exuberance. I would make jokes about borrowing your cloak of invisability, but that's not nice. Like others have said, you will get caught. Be nice to police or security and they will most often be nice to you. Your camera can come in handy here "I'm just taking pictures" works a lot better than "eat my knife!".

Hmm, recreactional tresspassing has come a long way since Pred first introduced the term.

Live your life like it really makes a difference.

must be dozens of hazarous chemicals in abandoned missle silos and chemical refinaries, you walked through those without so much as a dust mask? A spill might have been the reason they were abandoned in the first place.

A dusk mask was not on your list. Weapons are not cool to ahev with you if you get caught. Alot of the warning labels tell you nto to do the tresspassing part....

This isn't boot camp and you are not a ninja. But you sure look like an idiot in that outfit.

Survival knifes are for lamers. Get a katana ;)

I've had to use "a cutting tool" while UEing only once. I was visiting an abandoned house with my friend. Someone saw the open door, closed it and secured it with a rope while we were inside. I cut the rope with one of my keys.

I always have a Leatherman multi-tool with me. Haven't had much use for it while UEing, though.

Edit: And my other equipment? Cheap flashlight (to be replaced), camera, tripod and cellphone. I don't have any special equipment; I explore with the clothes I always wear and so on.

Here's a few more pointers:

Clothes:
-Wear something that is comfortable and loose (but not baggy).

-Don't wear anything that makes you look suspicious. i.e. Combat pants, tactical vests, etc. Basically you want to wear something that you could wear to the grocery store too.

- Dark colors such as navy blue and dark grey provide much better camoflage than solid black.

Equipment:

Here's a basic loadout which should be suffecient in most situations.

-Gloves. Get a pair of Mechanix gloves or a cheap knock-off version. These will help protect your hands from slivers, barb wire, etc.

- Flashlights. Get a good sturdy light and one or two back up lights. Check the batteries before you leave.

-I wouldn't recommend the logbook idea as you don't want to have a record of your illegal activities on you, thus possibly ruining your chances of only being told to get the hell out.

-NO WEAPONS. I cannot stress this enough. Being found with a weapon of any sort automatically raises your "In Trouble" level from "mischief" to "deep shit". If you need to feel safe, remember, a good D-cell Mag-Lite can knock someone the fuck out.

Also, if you want to bring a knife, make it as small as possible. A keychain knife with a 1-1 1/2" blade is enough.

-A cell phone. Make sure to turn it off or put it on silent.

-Optional Safety equipment. Some things you might want to have along are a P100 rated respirator, some wader boots if you're going draining. Think ahead, and figure out what you'll need. Don't burden yourself down with things you'll never use, but be prepared.

Those who make peaceful change impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.

2. I'm thinking about using some kind of device noisemaking (probably fireworks) that will provide a diversion if a security guard gets to close to me, so I need some plans for a remote transmitter that's simple to make and carry. Ideas?

As others have said, bad bad badbadbad idea. There is absolutely no reason to carry anything explosive or dangerous. If you're chucking lit fireworks at guards and police, then you've just crossed the line from casual tresspasser to dangerous criminal. Again, this is not a video game, this is real life.

My standard loadout on a trip:
- Camera, flash, lenses, batteries, etc.
- Tripod (which can double as an impact weapon, although I've never had to use it as such)
- Leatherman pocket tool (has a couple small knifes, pliers, etc.) (and I wear this all the time, not just during UE)
- Fingerless gloves
- One really good flashlight
- One really good headlamp
- A P100 half-face mask if I need it

For clothing, I try to make myself look like a bored college student, because, well...

Thanks for all the replies.

About the fireworks...I wans't going to to throw them at a cop (odd idea). The reason for a remote transmitter is to set something off remotely. What I had in mind was to wrap a m100 in tape and then tape it to the side of a car or two on the way in. On the way out I would remove it. The tape should prevent it from damaging the car but it should be enough to set off the alarm...thus momentarily distracting the guard. That sort of thing would be usefull for a live site I think.

that's still a really bad idea. Now it looks like you're trying to blow up cars or something. Plus, when a guard comes out and sees a car with the remains of a cherry bomb taped to the quarterpanel, he's probably going to call the police to investigate, and they you've just made a bunch of law enfocement officers curious about an odd happening at the place that was just peachy beforehand. If you really want to sneak into a place, do it by sneaking, not by distracting the security with explosives or sideshows.

Terrible idea. Not only will you, once again, cross the line from casual tresspasser to definite, dangerous criminal, but you also will make the security company think that there's some kind of major assault on their facility, and they'll beef up security.

Always remember to take some skin mags / porno books / bukkake videos with you.

If you need to ASK why, then you don't have what it takes to be a top UrBeXeR - sorry.

Deep-six the AnarchistCookbook.txt

There's a reason you don't see other UE`ers talking about carrying explosive devices and detonators.

Sorry to be blunt - but its just a dumb idea.

I think others have listed all the best items you actually need.

What if their car doesn't have an alarm? And what if it does but they never bothered to arm it? Even if they did, they either think they're being shot at, or they think someone is trying to blow up their car.

Bad idea.

Leave the fire crackers and camo gear at home. One thing that I bring and find vast use for is a video camera. You dont need anything too high tech but one that is good in low light will be very helpful. I use an analog and upload the video with a cheap capture card and have achived awesome results. Also never seen a situation where wire cutters would help in an emergency UEing. However I hace seen many where peroxide and bandades are helpful. Another thing you should always bring is a bottle of water. Not only may get thirsty with all the walking and climbing you may encounter but it is also good for washing out cuts and scrapes. Lets see, toilet paper has came in handy on many of my missions as I usually like to spend several hours exploring, filming, photographing, and just plain old feeling the vibe. Now back to the camo gear. Imagine you are a cop/security gaurd who is going to look more suspicous to you the guy walking by dressed normally or the kook in the bushes with the camoflauge and binoculars? Good luck and be safe.

Ow and one thing about distracting: if you see a security guard and estimate the possibility that he will notice you to be more than low, then the best way to distract him is to walk towards him and say "hi, are you looking for me? I thought this building was abandoned.". He is expecting to people running away, so this will startle him.

As I said: Social engineering is worth more than a gun, and could never raise your "In Trouble" rating.

Social engineering is usually the only tool I ever rely on in active sites. I take a maglight (the tiny ones) with me during scouting missions around town. I've never encountered a guard at a construction/abandoned site, but for those rare instances when I run into someone in an active building, remember that talking first is usually your best weapon. Something simple like a "Hey" or "How's it going?" will do the trick perfectly.
