Hey.

Hey everyone.

Firstly, I found this site through a Parkour site. I would like to compliment you on it's quality style, and originality. I especially like the quiz when you first sign up to the forums. Good job.

Secondly, what exactly is this all about then? It sounds like awesome fun. I obviousley figured it was to do with exploring places. Is it just exploration, but broken down with ethics, and rules etc?

Thanks again.

Welcome! I've seen a lot of talk of Parkour around here, but you are likely one of the first people to end up here having originated with Parkour.

Glad you like the quiz, as a lot of people didn't at first.

You hit it on the head. Exploring of the urban flavor is a sort of recreational trespassing. People here believe that harmless trespassing is a victimless crime. Exploration, whether it be crawling through tunnels, sewers, caves, and drains, or wandering around abandoned buildings, climbing towers, etc. often times involves going somewhere that you are not supposed to go. Care for safety is taken into the hands of the explorers. Many explorers use ideology that denounces vandalism, graffiti, theft, and similar activities.

Is it just exploration, but broken down with ethics, and rules etc?

Yeah, pretty much. Back in the 1960s and 70s in the golden days of college tunneling, there were sp few explorers that they could get away with more or less whatever they chose to. Most of the ethics promoted by people here are designed for preservation of the site and the explorers. Since the world of exploration seems to be growing to such numbers, when somebody does something stupid and gets a site closed down or security tightened, it hurts us all in a way.

Very interesting. It actually seems alot like Parkour. Because you must have to use your body to trespass. E.g, climbing, jumping things, etc.

Also like Parkour, it must all be to do with freedom?

UE is definitely not as body-centric as Parkour. While we try to keep in shape and often have to wrestle with the environment (e.g., squeeze into a narrow opening to get to the cool room beyond, or face the brutal heat of a steam tunnel) we usually compensate with gear: lights, clothing, camo, gloves, etc...

There is a part of physical training to UE, but in short, it's definitely nowhere near as intense as in Parkour.

As for freedom, there is some of that, but I think the basic urge that gives birth to the desire to explore is simply intellectual curiosity. Whereas Parkour guys seek to test themselves with difficult obstacles so as to "liberate" themselves, we urban explorers just want to always see more and cooler places.

Hello Levster, how good are you at parkour? have you got any pictures of yourself doing some parkour moves? if you do post them,
I myself am a parkour maniac, pretty much as good as the guys on urbanfreeflow.com, I just dont join the parkour forums n stuff like that. When I get a digital camera I'll send some photos of some of my stuff.

To summarize this post and sound very very pretentious; For UE the body is a means, for parkour it is an end.
