'Batman' scales royal palace

A PROTESTER dressed as Batman scaled the front wall of Buckingham Palace this morning, reaching a ledge near the balcony where the royal family appears on ceremonial occasions, campaigners and witnesses said.

The protester was identified as Jason Hatch, 33, from Gloucester, a member of the Fathers 4 Justice group that is campaigning for greater custody rights for divorced or separated fathers.

No member of the royal family was at the palace today.

Queen Elizabeth II was at her Balmoral residence in Scotland.

"We've got a guy dressed as Batman who's on Buckingham Palace on a balcony." said Matt O'Connor, spokesman for the group.

Mr O'Connor said the protest was timed to coincide with the day's trial of another group member, Patrick Ronald Davis, 48, who is accused of throwing purple flour at Prime Minister Tony Blair in the House of Commons in May. That incident sparked a security alert, and new restrictions on public access to the chamber.

On Saturday, another member of the group who dressed as Spider-man climbed atop the 137m London Eye Ferris wheel beside the River Thames.

Those 'dolts' want to see their kids!

I would hack off one of my limbs then not ever see my daughter again - and so I don't see that dressing as batman and climbing the fence of a home for inbred parasites that we have to fund as too much..

In the grand scheme of things.. ?

Yes, because clearly you will be taken very seriously dressed up as Batman and Robin. The only thing it would seem to make them take seriously is that there is lax security there. Dolts it is.

Uhmmmm... Stick to black t-shirts then Jester as you clearly have no idea how to draw massive amounts of attention to yourself; like you would want to when making a political statement to an entire country with limited media exposure.

Not that I'm having a go at you for that.. Drawing huge attention to ourselves isn't in the UE'rs job description really.

Every person in the UK with a TV or a Radio now knows what Super Dads of fathers 4 justice are all about, what they want and why they want it.

The batman outfit ensures that this news item goes straight to the top spot on every current affairs show here, and doesn't get a fifth place 'random guy in a nice jacket attempts to get into Buck. Palace' slot in the news. Clever if you ask me.

Bit better than a letter to your local MP do you not think ?

/Fan of wacky zany stunts.

Chris...

PS: Had the guy been dressed as a ninja (Tabi boots and all) MI5 probably would have taken him very seriously indeed: and shot him through the head.

Batman outfit = safety!!

Mod: PS.

Its good to see that the awareness of "Fathers for Justce" is spreading, and worldwide at that...which just goes to show that dressing up in comedy outfits is working.

As TZ says, if you want to get media attention you need to get creative!

And it is making people aware of the vulnerable position fathers are in regarding access to their own children.

May the superheros continue fighting this battle long and tirelessly!

Well Turbo, since I've never worn a Ninja suit, I really wouldn't know. Tabi boots, well you can walk through the mall with nobody noticing...

Yeah, they got recognition, notice the main points of the story seem to be about security beeing breeched and not much about an issue of child custody or rights of fathers. You're trying to tell me, if that guy goes into court to ask for more rights, the judge is going to think that the fact that he dressed up as batman and climbed onto the palace is going to be a positive thing ?

Dolts.

Fighting for rights is a great thing, but doing it like that makes it seem more like crackpots for rights instead... Maybe they should be directing their energies in other directions.

Whether or not the stunt does much towards helping the credibility of their cause...still, there's no denying the dude had a large set of cajones.

I always admire the ingenuity and balls of guerilla marketing - even if they're perceived as crackpot or whatnot. You can bet the website on his banner got a crapload of hits afterwards.

If I was a father worried about father's rights, I don't think I'd be doing something that will leave a blemish on my personal record, making me look any more unfit than I already did look. Publicity is great, but if the next time he has to go before a judge trying to get better vistitation or custody or whatever, if you think having done this is going to help his case, you're probably not seeing things very clearly...

I agree with Jester on this one. I feel badly for anyone who is being unjustly denied access to their children and wish them the best of luck. However, if you do something like this, while it gives you plenty of publicity, it can do serious harm to your credibility. And your credibility is probably your most important asset in this cause.

Having gone through the Canadian family court system while helping my wife battle her ex over visitation - our experience has been it doesn't matter about the credibility, criminal history or mental stability of the parent.

Her ex had a loooong history of mental illness, was physically and emotionally abusive to both her and the children, was chronically unemployed and of 'no-fixed address' status often...and even showed up in family court wearing a heavy metal tee-shirt, black leather vest and a buck knife on his belt.

Incredibly, the asswipe judge still ruled in his favour and granted his visitation.

Standing on a ledge wearing a Batman costume pales in comparison. Unorthodox, sure...but he made a helluva effort to draw attention to the cause. In a farce of a judicial system...who's to blame?

Just watched the latest story about this on the noon news. Was it about the plight of the fathers ?

Not a chance.

What was it, you ask ?

All about the security issues at the palace.

Holy misdirected energies Batman !

Good lord.

Let's view this with a sense of homour, hey ?? No one like monty phytho-esque slapstick tom foolery ? Sure these guys were serious in their 'mission' of raising public awareness but they did it in a really good way: people remeber this because it's FUNNY.

Batman visiting the queen might not make you poo your liver out with fits of girlish laughter but look at the pictures for a bit and not even smile ?

They made this 'escapade' funny - to draw attention. To a cause. Not to try and sway the legal system - that is best done in the courts.

Before this stunt Fathers4Justice was a known organisation.. Now it's a household name!

Jester - when talking about the Ninja outfit and Tabi boots I wasn't attempting to take the mickey out of you (Or anyone who dresses that way for whatever reason) but just making the point that if this guy had been dressed in a different way it might have been viewed very differently indeed by the ARMED police at the scene.

Dress as Batman.. Would you shoot batman ? Dress in combat pants or battle dress or even just a plain suit and well... is this guy serious ? Making a statment or plain deranged ? Will we shoot him down from there Sarge ???

I'll take the batman suit any day thanks!

Chris...

/Well, in fact I'd wear nothing... But a lamp on my head.

Oh, and I just checked the TV guide - there is a one hour special with Fathers4Justice on the FreeView Digital channel tonight.

That would NOT have happened without this stunt. Ever. Couldn't have BOUGHT that.

So I don't think it matters how it's being reported in your country (Fathers or security loop-hole at Silly Palace): here it's right on target.

:p

Anyways, if you are wondering why I'm so het up about this particular subject this is it in a nutshell: My ex had mental issues and at the time we parted would continually use my wee one (Daughter) as a lever to mess with me.

In this country I would have to pay full child support without any inheret right to see my wee one. It would have been a lenghty court battle that I would have to fund out my own pocket.

As it stands my ex. is much better now and I have the full and free access I deserve. Others are not so lucky here. If only one more person learned something about that problem from this stunt then I salute it.

Chris...

Dolts none the less.

His court date is in December. He should probably go in dressed as Batman again, since it's such a phenomenal idea...

Show your support Jest.... Send him some Tabi Boots.

Chris...

/Flipside of the coin: This thing will be in peoples minds until December - and then blown up again for the trial - as the judge fines him 17pence and gives him twenty five minutes Community Service.

Wonderin' if that's the green-eyed jealousy dragon for 'Batman' stealing Jester's thunder...?

<kiddin'>

Sure, I say go to court dressed as Batman. Commissioner Gordon can testify as a character witness.

Feztaa,

Hahahhahah! It's some kind of highly modified... rope ?!

Pictures are a little thin on the ground!

But here's a report with one good pic:

And this report compiled by the BBC backs up my theory about PR a little;
