What part of "post part of the image so we know it's not fake, while keeping the original to prove ownership" don't you understand?

I doubt it's real anyway.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

What part of I don't care if you or anyone else thinks it's real or not don't you understand?

I beleive it to be an authentic photograph.

However, it's not a "steam" manhole bursting there.

Steam service is not offered in Queens County, by Con Ed... and that APPEARS, (correct me if I'm wrong, Control), the 31st El, in Astoria that it is beneath.

However... built up explosive gases in adjacent systems FREQUENTLY enter into the conduit system of both Electric and Telephone company holes, and the introduction of a spark can, and does create such events, from time to time. (Though not terribly frequently).

These TOO, can create a chain reaction through the conduit system, "popping" further manholes down the line, resulting in multiple simultaneous events.

"Steam Hole". No. Those would be found on Manhattan Island only.

On a side note, Control, though he does have some cohorts and associates that can be considered "jovial antagonists" at times, he, himself, has visited me at job-sites in the past, and is a rather serious, and sincere fellow.

I've had the pleasure of showing him some real utility company safety practices and proceedures, which are in place to reduce the chances of this type of event, and protect the personnel involved in the day to day work-ops.

Hogger, if it wasn't for people like you around, I'd never bother to post anywhere or bother to interact with anyone in the UE world, the pointlessness of the above few posts being a decent reason why.

The photo is plenty real, and I have a few before and after type shots, the befores you can see that fire truck in the distance, the afters, you can see how I quickly start moving back and across the street, carefull avoiding getting in the way of the crew of the second fire truck that arrived behind me. I'm not going to bother to post any of them photos though because so long as I know what happened that day I don't much care what anyone else believes. Perhaps I'll use the series for some art gallery show or something. I know they have value though and there's only so much I'll give away on the internet (either in words or images. People make good money selling both.)

Anywho, hogger, If I didn't already know you and you're line of work, I'd be easily able to tell how knowledgable you are from the post. The first time that manhole popped, the car was over it. I was home at the time, not far from the scene (you're right, under the astoria el). i ran out as always, camera in hand. When I spotted the local FD truck coming down the street i figured fuck it, may as well get some photos as it arrives. Just as I took one, the manhole popped again.

I didn't even know I had that photo until I developed the negs.

So that was the second time it popped. It popped a time or two more to a lesser degree, and later in the day another manhole further down the street blew. (but hey, you didn't need me to tell you that'd happen!).

Same goes for the photo of the smoking manhole in the header of the ltv site. The first manhole that blew that day was actually on the other side of the street. That one popped a few minutes after they started putting water on the first one.

The firemen went door to door a bit around the scene, checking basements for gas as well as the meters. I've never seen one chain react into a house or building before, but I've seen them blow with enough velocity to break windows of nearby cars and buildings. That car obviously didn't fair out well with it's engine pushed up through the hood (luckily, it's owner was on the corner buying a shish, gotta love the greeks...).

Anywho. I love antagonists... just as much as I love getting to see the inner workings of this town from the people that make it happen. Is it wrong to like to learn and have fun? Hehe!

Park Slope, Brooklyn, 2000, I think.... I'll try to ask around about the exact date... and year.. as I can't remember off the top of my head... but anyway...

..that very scenario occurred (explosive gases entering premises via the ELECTRICAL conduit to the building, which wasn't properly sealed).

Once again, escaping gas from a bad joint in a gas line, even 10 feet away from an adjacent electrical/telco conduit, CAN seep in, over time. It goes to the point of least resistance.. or pressure... and will flow to that point through the earth soil.

Unsealed electrical conduit into house, gas seeping in, pilot light burning on the furnace or water boiler, and well... you know what happens next.

And it did. Building totally blown to the ground.

This explains their SOP (standard op proceedure) of going door to door to do gas tests in utility rooms, and occassionally evacuating the entire street of residents when this occurs until testing is complete.

A note: SOP for entering ANY confined conduit system space, TEST, PURGE, VENTILATE, TEST. You've seen this in actual practice on a job site of mine, Control.

Catch ya later.

One quick other note on the manhole popping prevention...

Ever see when they have a manhole cover open, and a yellow 4 foot by 4 foot fiberglass "grating" over the hole, with the cover on top of it, holding it down? Maybe with a few orange cones around it?

(I'm NOT talking about Manhattan's STEAM STACKS).. but the temporary fiberglass gratings.

Well, that's exactly what they're doing. Gas presence was deteteced in that run, and that's a long-duration ventilation practice, usually several days or so.. before personnel return to the hole to do the work.

Standard purging and ventilation with the blower sometimes isn't adequate, when the gases are still coming in from all the adjacent manholes via the conduits.

Now.. to recap this whole crazy thread..

#1 - You should always wear your pants up a little higher, when you skateboard.
#2 - Avoid skateboarding over manholes
#3 - Control's picture is authentic, in my opinion.
#4 - There is a huge difference between STEAM manholes, ELECTRICAL manholes, GAS manholes, and TELCO manholes and their varying, yet related hazards.
#5 - Don't light a stogie when you're entering a confined space. In fact.. just stay out of them if you don't have any business in em.
#6 - Control is a good guy. Hangs with an unsavory crowd.. but he's a good guy.
#7 - A skater girl has a nice new brand on her ass.

He said that putting in all that text would prevent people from stealing?

I thought he said he pixelated it so that it'd be harder for someone to steal it.
