We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Wouldn't there be steam pouring out of the manhole?

Not if it's the usual solid (light-tight) cover and it is more or less sealed with dirt and crud from the street around the lip.

Exploding and or hot manholes are nothing new to this town.

Currently, Con Ed has an ad campaign running in the subways and buses that says they are 'on it', with a lot of employees in trucks and climbing out of manholes giving the thumbs up - thus, I couldn't help to make a mockery of them in the ltv site skin/header (maybe I'll add a photo of that girls' burnt ass...) poke the link in the sig for the comedy - and yes, that is a manhole burning out & the back of a fire engine in that last image to the right. I still recall waking up that morning to the CO2 detector flickering on and off, and walking to the door to find the local FD parked on my curb.

I can't count the number of manholes I've seen pop at this point.

(yes, that is flame and a levitating manhole cover. it popped just as i hit the shutter for the just then arriving fire engine in the background).

The manhole that caused that burn, when they describe it as being "hot", is actually HOT, in the sense that it is electrically charged.

An incorrectly grounded or insulated cable or splice, can have "leaking" current flowing through it and metallic objects around it, to some extent.

That type of searing burn is like touching the element inside a toaster.

As a utility worker, for a company I'm not going to name, it's been my experience the hottest of "steam" holes, wouldn't cause that type of searing.

They (Con Ed) had electrical "leakage" problems for ages... and probably will. It's just an accepted hazard of having underground utility cables in a large metropolis such as this.

Road salts, corrosion, and age, seep down, and destroy the insulation, causing this type of problem constantly.

Having 'Con Ed' burnt onto your ass, for the rest of your life, I'm sure will yield a pretty nice settlement.

Maybe she'll wind up marrying a Con Ed guy one day, and he won't mind as much. OR maybe he will!..

There's numerous other innuendos and entendres I can think of right now.. but I'm sure you can use your imagination. (Such as Con Ed's new campaign slogan "We're On It!" with the the thumbs up image)

Most likely, after her settlement, I'm sure she'll spend some dough, and tattoo it over, with some sort of tribal design or something that is popular these days.

Good point, that would also mean there is a evil painting some where in the city trying to eat a baby ?

I think we should be calling in Ghostbusters first before we get ourselves into anything that big..

Even here in Duluth the steam manhole covers are hot... not sure exactly in what sense, but i did not feel any electricity when I burned my hand on the lid last winter. There was no steam leaking from it, but when I walked over the lid I felt the heat through my platform goth boots, so I absent-mindedly put my whole hand, face down, on the surface of the massive lid, and instantly I had a first degree burn that hurt for the rest of the day. THAT is a force that I do not want to mess with. The outdoor air temp that day was about -5* C.

The only photoshopping done on that photo was to pixelate it a bit so that if some asshole rips it off and claims they took it they'll have a hard time proving that in court (it happens, more than you might think - media outlets love trying to steal photos without paying a penny for the rights).

It was taken on black and white film. Anyone who wants can meet up with me and look at the negative.

So post a high quality copy of half the manhole image, with a copyright notice somewhere on it.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Half the image? I don't see the point. Look at the photo. the manhole is sideways in air (which of course is clouded by smoke). you can't see any logo, details, etc on it.

How's this - if that isn't an exploding manhole, tell me, how is it that the car next to the manhole (which was double parked OVER it the first time it blew) is pushed over to the left a few feet with it's hood smashed UPWARD from UNDER the car?).
