This first post'll be a test run for public reaction. I may supplement this thread if you people react well.

Ship name: John J. Boland
Site location: Lake Erie
Depth: 140 Feet (43m)
Dangers: Silt, confusing structure, depth, freezing cold water, decompression, loose wires, inviting openings.

Story: The John J. Boland was constructed in England by the prominent shipbuilders Wallsend-on-Tyne in 1928. Only five years after she was built, the Boland set off to deliver coal from Montreal, across the St. Lawrence Canals, to Erie, Pennsylvania. The weather was supposed to be calm, so she was grossly overloaded, with her hatch covers removed to fill them to the brim for the journey. When a freak storm mounted, the ship attempted to escape to calmer waters when her rudder stopped responding. Helpless, the waves mounted her bow, spilling into the open hatches. Within four minutes, she was swallowed by the lake. Fifteen men managed to scramble into the lifeboat. Four of their colleagues were unable to escape from the ship, and still remain inside as she lies on the bottom...

1.

She lies on her side in the frigid water, in almost complete darkness.

2.

3.

Her crippled rudder still lies straight, reminding passers by of the human toll.

4.

5.

Maneuvering around the bow, the cabin comes into view.

Now, children, we know that you must never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever enter a shipwreck without proper training and equipment. Don't join her ghost crew.

6.

Luckily, diver Vlada Dekina meets those prerequisites.

7.

8.

One may also access her cargo holds, and a lovely surprise.

Now, children, we know that you must never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever enter a shipwreck without proper training and equipment. Never ever. That's how people die. The following is the most dangerous part of the wreck.

9.

An open door leads directly to...

10.

...her engine room!

11.

12.

Her stern is no less beautiful.

13.

14.

15.

And her very, very big propellers.

And that's a shipwreck! So, tell me what you think.
[By the way, that lakebed? That's not sand. That's ooze. Lake ooze. Yuck. It's most apparent in #12.]

No shots of the skeletons? Disappointed.

But actually, this is rad. Keep it up.

Those were some really cool shots. 43 meters down must be sure to keep out the general public from this explore.

So my only real qualm with this. Are these your photos? If they are, then disregard. But if they aren't, I have an issue with these being posted as if they were. If not, I want source names. But I also think it defeats the purpose of what we have going here if they aren't as well. You posted photos in the last thread that weren't yours and I somehow have an issue with that, due to the nature of how this community works and such.

Astro,

Your concern is in good spirit, and will he considered and applied in future posts. Thanks for the insight!

Everybody else,

This looks like it will be a long, promising thread. ;)

Astro, long as he doesn't claim ownership I'm fine with it. Not all of us care about photos. Some are just along for the explore.

Fine with that, but I want a source. No one posts buzzfeed photos without a source, I feel that same courtesy should be given no matter where the content is from. As an academic, I find it really impolite and wrong, especially because some of the actual photographers could potentially be on here.

All of these are the photos by Vlada Dekina, though I should be more specific in the future. The commentary is my own based on my experiences on that site, and the history is thanks to Georgann and Michael Wachter's book Erie Wrecks East: Second Edition. I'll be more careful next time.

Very cool thread imho!

I heard about an epic underwater explore/recovery on npr last Sunday between exploring and thought I would share. Tragedy at Bushman's Hole. Fewer people have been to 890' (270m) than have been on the moon. I found an ABC video, poor quality but a truly EPIC adventure that unfortunately ended in several tragedies.

Oh yes, poor David Shaw. A testament to the unpredictability of diving science. Even if you do everything right, it all can still go wrong. I wrote a paper on the subject not too long ago.

"The camera mounted on the helmet on the lifeless Shaw revealed the circumstances of his demise. As he began feeding the body of Dreyer into the recovery bag, Dreyer’s head dislodged and began floating and tumbling in front of Shaw. His already narced mind lost its vital composure. The cameraman’s breathing rate accelerated. While fumbling with the body, Shaw’s lungs retained deadly carbon dioxide and lulled Shaw to a permanent rest."

It can come down to how you breathe. Not deeply or controlled enough can cause CO2 buildups in the lungs and simply put you to sleep. Anything can get you. That's why I outlined how one must NEVER enter a wreck without the proper training and equipment. One of the world's most skilled and prolific divers, John Bennett, was lost after becoming disoriented and subsequently lost in the interior of a shipwreck. Due to the immense depth of the dive, his body was never recovered. In high profile sites like the RMS Empress of Ireland or SS Andrea Doria, claiming seven and sixteen divers' lives, respectively.

Love ya Astro but as a redneck I find it nice that he shares the photo and story with us. I don't need citations. I'm not grading this. Just enjoying it

I get you, bro. But I'm a firm believer in giving credit where credit is due and this being a place of original content I think that using nothing but other peoples photos will slowly turn this into a dying form of Reddit. It chances compromising some of the quality that's still here and I want to prevent that.

Glad to see more divers popping up on here, especially around the Great Lakes. I have to agree with Astro on her points, but I look forward to more posts and hopefully some original photos. There are not nearly enough people actually photographing the wrecks around here.

I'm confused about this thread.
1. Why is it posted in Main and not in the proper regional forum? I vote for moving this.
2. Shipwrecks are cool and all, but your post is telling a story about a ship, with someone else photos, and not your story included at all. This is contrary to standard practice on this forum and isn't adding anything of value IMHO.
The whole thing doesn't sit right and I hope this doesn't become a trend.

I'd welcome a post like Therrin's DIVE THE MINE thread:
http://www.uer.ca/...8592&currpage=1&pp

That's an example of a member (albeit banned) posting original content, doing something crazy, and pushing the limits, not armchair quarterbacking someone else's explore.
