When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

Maybe it is just me but I can't get mad if someone found a way to make a few bucks. They do the whole tour thing in Philly and I don't see anyone knocking that.

Does that one ride around on luxury buses as well?

Someone's been doing it in Gary for a couple of years now - except they call it a "photography permit" that runs $50 (even though the city knows nothing about it).

Even better is when they post all their meetup intel publicly (somewhere this has its own thread) so that GPD or some junkie looking to loot a few-grand worth of cameras/fruit phones just needs to wait around for all the IL plates to show up because everyone's too scared of the hood to take the train and walk. I watched them get rolled at the Post Office in September; I was down the street at the Palace.

I've bumped into them a few times at United Methodist and at Palace, there are 2 organized tour groups in Gary, the guy who charges for a "permit" and the Meetup group. I was wondering why the Meetup no longer publicly posts their schedule of locations (I started watching it so I could avoid them) and I guess now I know. Permit guy keeps his tour groups away from other explorers, he wasn't too happy with us when we laughed at being told about needing a permit and told his group we'd been going there for years without permits and no problems.

As for Detroit, the shiny comfy bus is going to continue tours until someone gets seriously hurt either from unstable floors and dry rot or the locals in need of cash flow and possessing few compunctions and fewer morals will relieve them of their gear. The bus offers them a mental anchor to the cozy suburb they came from, and I agree that they are missing out on the greatest reward of urbex, the finding, the entering and the wonder of a location. Until they let go of the umbilicus and embrace stepping into the neighborhood they'll never understand why people explore; but they are not the explorer type, they are the tourists, the sightseers, the ones who come after. So long as the demand is there and it provides the guides money the tours are going to happen which is all the more reason to keep mum on locations for as long as possible. When I was there in October we didn't see any tours, but we were out on the week days rather the weekend. I think I would have laughed myself stupid if I had seen the tourists but I really can't get too mad at them. I mostly pity them.

I suspect that eventually these neighborhoods are going to start to collect their tolls, pawn shops love high end camera gear and electronics. No way does this end outside of a courtroom once someone gets mugged, hurt, or worse. I hope jesse and allana like paying off settlements for the rest of their lives.

That would make a lot more sense than yuppies selling passes. I've seen it happen in Korea, where property owners charge admission onto their disused property, so it could happen, and it makes sense (even if it somewhat spoils the experience).

I read this a day ago, but somehow it just popped into my head now and I realised how absurd that situation is. I would love to have been there to see what effect that must've had on the group.

EDIT: I'm assuming this is the guy?

"Ruin porn" is supposed to be derogatory because the people of Detroit don't like when outsiders focus on the ruins and not the city's revitalization. I've walked the city in the day and at night. Most of it is so sparsely populated that it doesn't even seem unsafe on the streets--even though there's a lot of crime everywhere in the city. Some parts of the city are almost completely empty and feel like being in the countryside.

The most dangerous areas not those that are mostly abandoned buildings and urban prairie, but those with a high concentration of impoverished residents. If you want to rob someone in Detroit, it makes more sense to rob a business, cabbie or person where there are actually a lot of people rather than going to an abandoned factory. So don't carry valuables on your person, dress in nondescript clothing, be confident and always be aware of your surroundings. You should be fine no matter where you go.

Has anyone watched the documentary Detropia? Watching it really made me want to take a trip there and check out some of the abandoned places.

The Hidden City tours? They get places to legally throw the doors open, it's quite different from this.
