|  | | | A lot of people recommend to follow railways and bike/walk near them to find old abandonments. This is apparently very illegal. What I'm asking is if this law is like jay walking where no one cares, or if it's heavily enforced. If I decide to bike along the railroads (a safe distance of course), will I be stopped and fined?

where I am from, if a conductor in a passing train sees you he will sometimes radio in your whereabouts to other personnel at the nearest station who will come out in their trucks to stop you…..and you'll have a lot of explaining to do….and they won't be friendly.
sometimes the cover of darkness can be used to your advantage and of course you'll always want to be aware of when trains are passing by so that you won't get hit…and believe me, ppl get hit all the time

| | | | Probably depends on a lot of things. I used to be seen on/by the tracks of the Norristown High Speed line (run by SEPTA) all the time as a kid and nobody ever came to get rid of me. I have walked other SEPTA tracks in the city too and around RR property without any negative results as well.
When I think about it I have taken the train tracks to abandonments a lot of times, been passed by trains a few, and never had a run in with the RR police about it. However I am sure if they do come upon you the results could vary from being told to beat it to being arrested.
My advice, use to tracks and try not to be seen if and when the trains roll by.

I was actually cursing along the tracks by an old hospital, and the security truck saw us, and drove up to us to try to yell at us, but said we were allowed to be walking on the tracks but not to try and come onto the property. So we kept walking around on the tracks and came back later.
I've been seem by multiple trains and never had anyone come out for me. I have been in a tunnel when a train came through and he blared his horn at us and it was loud as shit, but that was the extent of our "run-ins."
But yes, If you hear a train coming, try to duck out of sight if possible just to avoid more prying eyes from seeing you.

| | | | around here there is woods on either side of the tracks 90% of the time, and a law regarding distance, i believe the legal distance is 25 feet, so if you fear is just run to a distance away or duck into the trees, if you have the option, which makes wearing camo jacket (not full camo, just the jacket, so youre more 'average;) a good idea

Most of the time, the engineer and I share a wave. If my son's with me, we usually get a quick toot of the horn as well.

| | | | As a general rule of thumb, most railroad right-of-way is considered private property. There may or may not be No Trespassing signs. I've been stopped by CN or CP Rail police before, although thankfully I was lucky those times and they let me go without a trespassing ticket.

| | | | The rail line, and usually 30' to either side of the centerline of the tracks is railroad right of way. They own it 100%. Streets cross it only by their permission. Some areas, and some personnel, they are far more strict and will immediately write you up. Others they don't worry about it. You results will vary.
That said, do use caution when around rail lines. I can never forget the day I was tailing a train heading along a highway, running around 65 MPH, with a 30' piece of chain dangling off one of the cars. Anybody or anything within 20' of the tracks was in a potential kill zone. Tried calling it in, and tailed as far as I could. 911 operator didn't know WTF to do about it, and I ended up stopped at a light after a few miles.

| | | | I've actually been stopped twice on tracks and needed to provide ID, I had the second officer look up the specifics about it and it turns out it wasn't very specific at all. Essentially if you're in the "right of way" of the train (inside the rails), you're committing a serious crime, if you're on the tracks (outside), you're just trespassing. However, the area around them (gravel) seems to be a grey area, the farther you can get away from it the better. Please note that each county and state may have different laws, but this is how it is on West NC. But do go on railroad tracks, a lot of finds to be had on them.

but if i am on a section of track that only has very mild traffic ill walk on those tracks every day.

I've heard the north end is completely abandoned, but occasionally I still hear the train, so I'm assuming some part of it is still used. I walk them a lot, they're pretty overgrown with weeds and falling apart... rail spikes missing, last week there was a random garden hose just laying on the track... I'm afraid of heading too far north for fear of fines, though.

| | | | This year has been a particularly bloody year for SEPTA, particularly on the R3 West Trenton line. There have been at least three or four incidents of high school kids jumping in front of the trains between the Langhorne and Neshaminy Falls stations. I expect that they'll be more vigilant to prevent any further deaths. People have been extremely conscious of the railways because all of the high school deaths happened within about a four month period. I've never had anyone confront me, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're on the look out now.
