| | Can anyone identify this symbol? < on 11/4/2013 9:46 PM >
| | | Can anyone help me find this symbol? I have been finding it literally everywhere near the areas that I explore (abandoned areas in at least two different towns). It is only ever carved in trees and apparently whoever carves them has been doing it for years. Some are very old based on the healing of the scar in the tree, while others I have found were so fresh that there were still wood chips on the ground. I would think it was gang related but I have never seen it spray painted anywhere or anywhere other than carved in a tree. Thank you!

| | | I don't have any pictures (which is stupid, I know) but I will take some and post them up. Now that you mention it, it is found usually on beech trees, but that may be just because the bark is smooth. I have seen it on two other types of trees with rough bark (not sure of the type) but that was it. I have found nearly forty of them in all. The areas are near well used railroads, so I thought it could be old "hobo" language, but I can't find a match there. Nor can I find a match with any known gang symbols. It is very strange. And with all the abandoned buildings in these two areas, I can't figure why they would only put them on a tree and not carve them on a door or spray paint them on the buildings.

| | | If I had known it involved Cthulhu I wouldn't have gotten involved! Although the area these are found in could be described as having that "Innsmouth look". Maybe Dagon is up to something... On a serious note though, I wish I knew what it meant. Maybe it is just someone who made up their own symbol and carves it everywhere they can?

| | | I am going out Wednesday night and I will photograph a couple of them and post them up here. It could be a local variation of hobo symbols. In one area, it is on nearly every other tree for approximately a mile through a totally abandoned neighborhood of approximately 80 World War I era houses. None of the houses have been vandalized or even spray painted, and many are still full of old furniture and items. Like I said, some of the carvings are years old, and some are less than a week. I find new ones all the time. Anyway, I will update tomorrow.

Yes, as I said in the first post they are near very active railroads. Less than a mile actually. Both myself and another poster cannot find the symbol among any known hobo symbols though. Also, it is repeated with such frequency that I can't see why they would do it that much. Almost every tree with smooth bark has one on it.

| | | Here are some pictures, as promised. As you can see, some are very fresh and some are pretty old. These are just a fraction of 40ish total carvings that I have found. They are often only one or two trees apart from one another so the area is very crowded with these carvings.
