Well, here is a little more info. I agree it could be random and as simple as a symbol someone likes and carves all over everything they see.

The area is an abandoned part of an otherwise very active federal installation. It is heavily patrolled by armed federal police. This area is an abandoned housing complex of about 80 World War I era houses full of stuff within the installation perimeter. None of the houses are vandalized, and most still have stuff in them.

The active area was, and still is, a locked psychiatric facility. There are lots of very interesting tree carvings (words, phrases, etc.) made by the mentally ill that date back to the 1930s. There are none more recent than the 1950s. The ones I have taken pictures of are still being carved today by someone.

I'm not saying it is satan worship, or anything crazy. I am just curious why this symbol could be so important to someone that they have been carving it with such frequency over such a long period of time. I think that because of the type of area, paintballers/farmers/etc. can be ruled out. Also, there are signs posted everywhere warning of severe penalties for possessing firearms and knives, so whoever is doing it is risking having to deal with vandalism and possession of a knife charges if caught by the police presence. So it must be important to them to carve this stuff.

Given your information, I think it could be from travelers. I know some of them follow some kind of code for things like safety, power, fresh water, shelter, etc. My best friend knows more about them, she has one tattooed on her knee that means brother or something like that.. idk she traveled a lot
but if you can't figure it out, fuck it, its satanism

it looks like some kind of W that maybe they tried to make it look a bit 3D... not sure if W maybe could be an initial for someone staying at the center you said is on the property?

Or, maybe it's LWJ in some sort of symmetrical style to look like a symbol? Could that stand for anything else you saw written on any of the trees?

In some of the pics, it can sort of look like a grin on a mouth or some sort of snear.. but there are no eyes or nose to fit with it...

I think maybe look at some of the other carvings to see if maybe something matches. I am guessing maybe the person doing it wants to leave a mark but probably doesn't think it's illegal like it would be to carve it on property in the area... but it also seems like it's someone who returns there consistently... maybe the only way you will ever know aside from waiting till you see who is doing it would be to carve "<---what does that mean?" next to it.. otherwise I don't see you ever actually finding out.

my guess is local version hobo code for safe camp site. Triangle in the middle is a person, bo's are usually upside down tho.

This is in Rhode Island yes? You mentioned they're carved into trees... based on the pictures, they look like hardwoods. Southern New England used to be full of elm trees, New Haven actually used to be called "Elm City" until the Dutch Elm Blight killed pretty much every single Elm tree within 200 miles back in the 30's and 40's.

When I lived in Worcester, MA there was an overgrown arboretum that had a few old Elm and Chestnut trees that survived the blight, they were similarly marked for further study (although not with vague-ass symbols, usually with roman numerals from 1 through 13).

Just a thought, you could rule this out if the markings appear on a variety of tree species.

I may not believe in marriage, but I do believe in best men.

Blitz, that is a good idea. Also thank you to shotgun mario and junkyard. All those ideas definitely make sense as a possibility.

mewthree, it could definitely be someone's stylized initials or some sort of personal marking they made up. I have tried everything I could think of to find a match, including rune stones, military map symbols, the more common hobo symbols, and even way off the grid stuff like modern day Wiccan/New Age. The fact that I haven't found anything even remotely close to it either means that your idea, along with the ideas of those that think it is a local type of hobo code, makes the most sense. I like the idea of just writing "what does that mean" next to one of them lol.

tfaosd, I actually thought it vaguely resembles a bat myself!

Anyway, I appreciate all of you guys who weighed in on this. This is why we have a great community.

It was a prophetic rune foretelling of the impending banning of Therrin. The trees should be worshiped as gods.

It looks a little like a folded napkin that would be part of a place setting at a fancy restaurant. Maybe it's a territory marker for a gang of restaurant waiters.

Yeah I just recently got out of the waiting business, because I couldn't take busting caps in my friends who roll'd with another restaurant anymore.

Drifter tag.

The Durango '95 purred away a real horrowshow - a nice, warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts. And soon it was trees and dark, my brothers, with real country dark.
