Does anyone have any Cave Clan contacts who might be able to phone him or something?

V sensible

Surely someone who does UE in his area must know him and be able to get in touch?

Does anyone know if "We're sorry, all circuits are busy. Please try your call again at a later time" is an Australian or long-distance telecom message?

It's hard to tell from the completely accentless synthesized voice.

I would say it originates at your (US) side of the connection. It doesn't sound like any message I've heard (Standard message is "Your call can not be connected, please check the number before calling again..."). "..all circuits are busy..." doesn't really sound like something they'd say here, but you can never be too sure, I guess.
As a rule, Australian error messages repeat two - four times after which the voice reads off a few letters before resuming.

Australia Direct numbers are:
from Canada 1800 663 0683
from Finland 0080 110 610
from UK 0 800 89 0061 (may need to press * after)
from USA 1800 682 2878

Those are all direct calls, you don't need any dialling prefixes or country codes, and it will connect you to a Telstra (main phone co.) operator here. I think the Australia Direct operators only have a subset of the capabilities a normal operator has, how much they can/will do, I don't know.

If you need anything done from this end, just get in contact with me. I live a day's drive from Canberra so I can't really go see or look for him in person.

Surely it must be daytime there now, and a local friend or explorer must have got in touch with him?

This is worrying now......

Crikey, and no-one has heard nothing of panic?

Does anyone know his home address or called round?

I believe he had a falling out with some members of Cave Clan (before i joined), and none of them speak to him anymore. I'm not sure if anybody from the Clan even knew all this was going on until just then when Ninj posted a message on our forums mentioning the situation with Panic...

(You know, you might consider not posting unless you have something helpful to add. Posting "what's happening now" every three hours isn't helping anyone.)

I've managed to ring through to Panic's home (or at least his reputed home number) and office several times, always with no answer. I've asked Canberra explorers to check up on him either by phone or in person if they're able.

Weird, I dunno. Anyone who does have Panic's details isn't online now. You can do a whois look up on urbanadventure.org and run the name through whitepages.com.au looking for suitable candidates, but even if the whois info is real, I wouldn't be surprised if he were unlisted.

EDIT: Ninj's post made while I was still writing this.

As much as I hate to see the glass half empty...

One thing you might want to try is calling the local Police and asking them if there have been any incidents with his name recently...if our worst fears are true, they would have it on record.

The police in his area know him personally from what he's told me, so I'm SURE if someone calls them (Police) and asks around, somebody will know how to find him.

I hope the guys OK, but, isn't he on his world tour right now?

Where is he supposed to be in the world?

I don't think he is home, or anywhere close to it.

He aborted the tour mid-trip and returned to Australia. There's a whole thread or two here if you want all the details.

As far as I understand it - he is already back.

Long time lurker/reader, here... I have dealt with quite a few suicide situations at work (medic). I usually don't have much to add to this board, but I feel inclined to post a few things in this case.

The problem is, it is very possible to kill yourself and make sure no one notices for a long long time. Many suicides remain missing persons cases. I can tell you that you are all right to be concerned and you should look into this until he posts again or someone gets a hold of him. My suggestion is to continue with attempts to reach him and the local authorities. If his site was maliciously hacked you would think he would post to explain that.... Even if this is a joke or cry for help it still needs attention. This guy seems to be a good friend to many of you, and your concern and efforts illustrate that. I have seen depression an suicide effect some of the most brilliant people. Keep trying to get ahold of him.

I took up Exkalibur's suggestion and have rung his local police armed with what meagre scraps of information I have on him, and the fact that he is (possibly) known to them in some way.
Believe it or not, the nearest (I think) station to him was closed so I ended up having to ring the Canberra city station. They said they'd look into it and get back to me, but I don't know how much they'll do. I had little more than a name for them, and I could almost hear the "weirdo" bulb pop in her head when I mentioned the internet.

I really hope I don't end up causing any serious problems for Panic with this, but I did take other people's thoughts into account before doing this. They asked for urbanadventures' URL, which I gave them, because they wouldn't have lifted a finger otherwise. I told her that ot mututal hobby was photography, centering on urban landscapes, decaying infrastructure and the like. "His site's kind of a gallery of such images..."

Oh well, hopefully I'll check back tomorrow to find a pissed off post from a very alive and well Panic! screaming about how he was woken up at 3am by the cops banging on his door because some stupid clown called the cops and told them he was going to off himself.

Let's hope so.

The police rang me back. No news. They're having a very hard time finding him based on his very common-in-that-area name. If he doesn't in fact have a criminal record, I don't think they'll find him. All they have is his name, PO Box address from a whois lookup on urbanadventures.org and an approximate year of birth (~'70-'71).
If anyone has met, has a description of Panic! to hand based on his pictures, has any contact details or any other information on him that could help them find him, it would be a very good idea to call the police and tell them. The number for the station I called is +61 2 6245 7208. (NB: I've since tried calling again at around 3m local time - no answer - there's a page of Canberra Police contact numbers here.

With what they have, they project their investigation as taking up to three days, with no guarantee of sucess which is not acceptable given the possibilities that are involved here.

Hopefully I'm going to look like a real idiot soon for writing all this for no reason.
