| | | I find the Entry Neds very relevant when UE-ing, as I like to be forwarned when these gobshites are about, lots of expensive equipment with me and wouldn't like to be brassing it about when there's neds about. Glad it's been added again, it could save a life :>

| | | Lonewooolf, So you remember the original entry being there then ? I'm not going crazy !!??!! Well, not going... more crazy ? Indeed - that was my thinking exactly; you are wandering around a site with possibly 100s of £££'s worth of gear, you want to know who or what you are dealing with. And a Ned just looks like any other guy in a tracksuit. You need to know what to look for to be on gaurd for this the most dangerous of Scottish hazards !!

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

| | | That's unfair to say "ned" is an irrelevant term. Half the garbage in the database is irrelevant, which is why I've looked at it on about, oh two occasions. I bet you guys let "homeless" slide by. In the case of Scotland, "Neds" is a special term for delinquent youth. You deleted it without consideration of our overseas friends. That is what I call "b*****it" edit: I just took a look at the encyclopedia: among others ; pepper spray, tabi boots, e.t.c.. come on people, this is a local term. I plead guilty to asking Turbo what a friggin Ned was! If there was any better use of the Ue encyclo, I can't think of one! [last edit 6/23/2004 3:30 AM by 'Dukes - edited 1 times]

Mag lite, respirator, asbestos, etc. I dunno man, I think ned is a bit weird. I though I was gonna click on it and see a picture of Flanders.

Pepper spray is a common term used all over the place. Tabi are more obscure, but still used by at least a half dozen explorers on here, spread out across the continent. But as I said earlier, tons of what is in the encylopedia doesn't seem like it needs to be there...

But everyone should know what these things are! Even my mother would know what all these words mean and she's not an exlorer. I didn't know what a Ned was, why not have somewhere to explain it. I would rather see Encyclopedia Entries about things I've never heard of than everyday objects. I might actually look at the encyclopedia if that happened.

| | | Wow... This is a pretty emotive issue it seems!! I'll say just one other thing: Yes, Neds is a 'localism' but so are many things for instance: When I first come onto uer.ca I was pretty damn unsure of what a 'FlashLight' was. Common place to you but here in the UK a 'FlashLight' is called a 'Torch' and nothing else ever. If you went into a shop here and asked for a flashlight they might try and sell you a strobe unit for a camera. So what to do ? ASK what a FlashLight is ?? How stupid would that look ? It was in the Encyclopedia - I looked, I understood. Neds I think is the same. In an international commumity such as uer.ca it's important.

No doubt. I never look at the encyclopedia unless there's some sort of issue about it. Usually because someone had an entry deleted.

Excellent point. Especially since there are a few non-North American explorers on here.

| | | To Turbo, Ned is a relevant term, it's not like saying "geek", it describes a certain group of folks one might find exploring (like homeless). It wasn't intented as a joke, it's a real term to the Scottish community, perhaps elsewhere as well. Apparently these folks are of some concern to Scot explorers because while I and Turbo's crew find them amusing to look at, they also have the potential to be dangerous. Phouque; We made my French teacher repeat that over and over. Ms. Dolan ! How do you say "I like a seal"? Ahhh OUii, bon questionl, J'aime le Phoque! Then we would say how do you say "I like a good seal?" "AHAH Jaime le bon Phouque". I've been laughing for fourteen years.

| | | It is absolutely essential that any of you visiting Glasgow and certain other parts of Scotland on a UE trip should be aware of what a "Ned" is. Otherwise you are liable to be going home in a coffin. I kid you not!
