I've been known to smoke a joint or pipe or two if the time & place are right. I don't smoke in the middle of the forest in the dry season. I'd say common sense and respect apply here, but that doesn't exist anymore. Everyone who I explore with smokes too so that has never been an issue.

My cigarette smoking explorer buddy puts his butts in his pocket when he's done, so if anything is catching on fire it's going to be his pants.

gonna make you sweat till you bleed.

Unless your post is wholly about smoking and UE, don't post in this thread.

Don't like what the guy said above you, tough shit, don't post about it in this thread either.

I don't like what you said about not posting in this thread but I posted about it anyway.

heres the question, where do you put your butt while you're taking the picture? If its in your mouth the smoke gets in the way of the picture, if its in your hand in impedes camera work... Great question of our age.

actually i just hold it in my hand with little problem but I figured i'd try to post something on topic

It's not the smokes makin' me sick, It's standing out in the cold to smoke em'

E-cig fucking rocks it. Goes in my pocket a second after a drag for a shot, then I can go right back to it. No burns, no fuss.

It all depends on the location. For me, it depends on the sewers. Drains, I always smoke in them, unless the exit point is in a high populated area (normally it just flows out to the Mississippi River). And caves, it depends on if there is proper air flow or not. ToT I will smoke (away from mold) and S&S now has proper air flow (due to a few of us digging around a wall that opened a vent hole?) It also depends on the size of the cave as well. Just don't be a dumbass and light an actual fire with boxes, wood, gas, or fake Christmas trees. That will kill you.

Everyone, chill the fuck out! I got this.

Smoking and asbestos aren't good for you independent of each other, so I'm sure it's safe to assume that they aren't any better in tandem. Are they any worse? Probably not, but maybe.

My take on it is this: I smoke. I smoke when I drive, I smoke when I read, I smoke when I feel like it. I don't see why I should cease that activity just because I'm in an abandoned building. (Exceptions include powered buildings that may have active smoke alarms or instances when the smell of cigarette smoke could make me detectable to security/someone I'm trying to hide my presence from.)

In regards to putting my butts out when I'm done with them, generally I put them out on the bottom of my shoe to ensure that they're extinguished so that I don't accidentally torch a building. If I'm in a tunnel or on a tar or gravel roof, I'll just toss them on the ground. If there's water around, I'll probably put them out in that.

Well, as to who really cares, I suppose I'll find out. I'm coming up on somewhere near 20 days of no cigarttes and no e-cig.

Exploring helps. It's a good substitute, I get the same rush that nicotine did...and it's also been part of the motivation. The first time I ever really considered quitting was a couple years back after climbing across some very asbestos filled pipes with no respirator. Thought about the longevity of my life and I've been trying to quit since.

LONG POST ALERT. TL;DR AVAILABLE

Smoking is hazardous to your health, Urban Exploring or not.

As you probably already know, smoking holds serious side effects for the smoker. In a Urban Exploration scenario, a smoker is likely to become out of breath and may suffer coughing fits while doing exercise. Smoking will make you much more sensitive to mold and dust, which abandoned buildings are full of.

The combination of smoking and asbestos can be quite hazardous. "Cigarette smoking weakens the lungs and decreases their ability to remove asbestos fibers. Cigarette smoke also irritates air passages, causing them to produce more mucus. These effects block the passage of air and further decrease the removal of asbestos fibers from the lungs."(Agency For Toxic Substances And Disease Registry). Remember, asbestos fibers are infamous for causing Mesothelioma, a painful lung cancer with very low curability rates.

"When a cigarette smoker is exposed to asbestos, his/her risk of lung cancer increases by 50 to 84 times."(ATSDR)

Smoking makes detection by security/people-walking-by easier, as it gives off light (which can be seen at night) not to mention a fairly distinct smell. If the area smells like cigarettes and you smell like cigarettes as well, someone (such as a security guard) can easily put two and two together. Expect security to be tougher on you if they see you leaving cigarette butts and ash lying around. If worst comes to worst, your cigarette butts and ash may be used against you as evidence.

Also, make the trip more enjoyable for others by smoking (if you must) in well-ventilated areas. No non-smoker will appreciate a lung full of second hand smoke, especially in confined spaces or places with limited air flow. Also, as pointed out by subtilis, smoking while you or someone else is taking pictures is unadvised, as the smoke may get in front of your/their camera.

Cigarettes present quite a fire hazard. Cigarette butts can potentially ignite surfaces if carelessly thrown onto the ground. Be sure to properly extinguish them. To be safe, bring the cigarette butts back home. You certainly do not want to be found responsible of a fire.
Many abandoned buildings may contain flammable materials.
As a rule of thumb, do not smoke anywhere that is likely to contain flammable gases or highly flammable chemicals. Mines (especially coal mines) commonly contain the flammable/explosive gases hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide. Other abandoned facilities such as factories and chemical plants may contain these gases or other chemicals that ignite/explode easily. Gasoline/oil fumes can be found in gas-stations and in the basement of abandoned homes due to leaking gas pipes/tanks.
It is easy to see why you should not light a cigarette in these types of places. You might seriously injure yourself.

Related notes:
  • If an area smells of slightly rotten eggs, it may contain hydrogen sulfide.
  • Sewers (should you want to smoke in them) may contain methane.
  • Battery charging stations contain hydrogen.
  • Remember, you may not realize an area contains flammable gases or materials, as many of them, such as hydrogen, are odorless, tasteless, and colorless.

------
TL;DR
------
Use common sense:
  • Smoking may lead to fires/explosions, especially if you smoke near things that are flammable.
  • Smoking is bad for your health and increases chances of asbestos-related lung diseases.
  • Smoking makes you more likely to get caught.
  • Don't smoke in confined spaces.

I myself quite enjoy a dose of asbestotine when exploring. I find the asbestos creates an abrasive lining on my lungs on which the tar and nicotine can adhere better.

In all reality, unless the air quality really is pure shit, I'll have a smoke somewhere in the building. I'm a heavy smoker and I like to take my time whilst exploring, and I can't spent a whole lot of time in a building without at least one smoke.

What I do is I carry an old shoe polish tin with me and use that as a portable ashtray. No butts left behind, no risk of fire because all ash and ember goes into the tin, and then I throw out the butts when I get home into my butt bin.

"...and then, said HE: 'it is the true explorer who shall find the point of entrance, and then shall enter with peace' and lo! the unboarded window was found!"

It's probly been said before but cigarettes seem like a bit of a hazard for a number of reasons-

The cherry can be seen from a distance (You could use your hand to hide it, my dad said thats what they were trained to do in the army but its better to have both hands free while in an unstable environment)
They give of a scent which some people can notice from very far away
Fire hazard especially in areas that might have methane or an unchecked gas leak
The smoke can make your pictures blurry

I suppose smoke before you explore lol.

We'll often find a good spot for a smoke break when we're exploring. Rooftops come to mind, they're usually around the halfway mark.

This. I just got back from a trip to Centralia (my second ever exploration) and I figured it was safest to just pocket my butts, even if it makes my pants smell like stale burned tobacco. Prevents fires and keeps the place clean for the next people to visit.

If I'm anywhere near my car I tuck it into the wedge between the mirror and the mirror housing while I snap a photo. Otherwise, in my hand that's operating the button on top so the smoke doesn't get in my shot.

Nothing like going to extra lengths to make sure Centralia doesn't catch on fire. Oh wait...
