looking at this car over the weekend if it's still there.
What do I need to look for that is critical in these cars. I know that the timing case leaks and the exhaust pieces fail expensively. This is a car that I plan on trying my hand at rallying with.

$3000 is a bit steep, but I am going to haggle.

And...

I know this car... the fucker is 110% GO!

the boyfriend just bought a 99 subie 2.5 rs over the winter. The person that owned it before him though was a moron... we have found so many stupid things done to the car to "modify" it.
The one you are looking at sounds like a good price as long as the motor is good. The head gaskets are known to blow pretty often, and if its like his it sucks down oil...
The 2010 one is just sexy

2010's not gonna show too much wear and tear (I'd hope)

Add check the cv joints to your list, especially the front two. If he did a lot of sharp cornering they may have some wear / tear they are probably $300-500 each for a half axle replacement.

I've been considering a Black 2008 STi Hatchback over a full STi swap into my current car. The price ought to be about the same when I'm done with college in two years.

You could wait a year and buy the toyota-subaru FT-86 when it hits stateside, I think they are listing in the same price range as the WRX.

one of my Xbox friends was telling me about the FT86... any spy of yet?
Subaru is a Japanese car that I thoroughly enjoy (and they used to be affiliated with GM... )

It's worth about half that to 2 grandhttp:// unless it's SUPER clean. The 2.5s love to eat head gaskets, the trannies are delicate, and the GC8 bodies LOVE to rust. Fuel line rot at the sending unit is common, and oil leaks on the front of the engine can get expensive quickly.

Getting that out of the way, the GC8 Impreza is my favorite Subaru, they are a blast to own.

Also I have some slotted front rotors and EBC green stuff pads still in the box I'd love to sell cheap since I don't have a subie any longer.

a couple things to note here. i build subarus mainly, so i have TONS of experience with these.

general rules of thumb:

stay away from 99 2.5RS. 99 was actually their worst year for piston issues.

now, the 08+ pistons started having issues again. they are fine in stock form, but once you begin to increase the boost, they LOVE to crack the ringlands. there is actually a recall for their ECU tunes being incorrect and leaning out in the higher rev ranges.

as for the FT86, yes, it is using a subaru designed motor, but it is not going to be an EJ based motor. it's a new design. i'm not even sure if the transmission bellhousing bolt pattern is going to be the same. but this new motor will share only it's opposed cylinder design with the previous generation. subaru has finally began to change their old designs. once the new body style (07+) came out, they FINALLY changed the rear suspension design, etc. Fuji Heavy Industries is taking subaru in a new direction it seems. there are even talks of them designed a standard inline-4 design motor for some of their cars.

And entirely ruined it for rally use... such a weak setup. I mean, they all bend rear lateral arms, but they really cheesed out on the '07 and up cars. Plus they look like a Mazda3.

yeah, totally. i am not a big fan of the new suspension.. nor am i a fan of the newest iteration (2011+) STi.

we just finished up a 2011 STi, actually. 35R turbo setup, blah blah. it made 408whp on the stock top-mount intercooler and we're now building a one-off custom core for him.

so what year older Impreza should I be looking for? Keep in mind that the majority of cars I'll be looking at are coming from Vermont which has some of the shittiest roads in the known universe.

well, the EJ22 was one of the most stout motors that subaru produced.. those, IIRC, or from the mid 90s

the legacy wagons of that era are bullet proof and go for pennies. usually, you can find someone sitting on a turbo model and they have no idea. look for a very subtle hood scoop.... and since all subarus pretty much use the same parts on all their cars, it will come with the same unbeatable turbo EJ22. that's what i would go for.

A Perfect Example

*edit: the turbo models used the 2.2L SOHC and the non turbo used the 2.5 DOHC

Early 90s Legacy Turbos have an absolutely bulletproof closed deck block if you want to build a monster engine on the cheap, too.

We took out a guard rail with a 97 Brighton wagon a few years ago. My friend hit ice and lost it, side swiped the guard rail and the car ended up with a scratch on the side but we bent that poor guard rail 90 degrees. Flattened it.

3500lbs with a very low center of gravity they are one of the most stable vehicles you can get. Rolling these cars is very difficult. He went off to college, his sister ended up totaling it (she figured out how to roll it, spin the wheel on the highway, walked away with out a single scratch), he replaced it with the same make/model/color with a bit lower mileage...

That black one looks fuckin niiccceee always loved the gold rims.

I've been in the market for a new car, and actually just today went to a subaru dealership pretty much ready to buy a new impreza WRX. My dad and I stood around for a good 10 minutes and nobody would help us out or give us the time of day. I'd expect (or at least not be so bitter about) that type of treatment if we were browsing at a maybach dealership, looked shabby, or rolled up in a shitbox. i drove there in a $50,000 expedition, was dressed nicely, cleanshaven, nothing offensive...didnt matter. the receptionist seemed entirely disinterested, a couple of sales guys walked past to greet other customers who arrived after us.
what assholes.

We ended up getting frustrated and went off to see a few other dealers. Shit, even at Kia they came up right away and at least ASKED us if they could help.
It wasnt my first choice, but after test driving it and spending a few hrs at the dealership with a helpful salesman, I'm now reallly leaning towards a 2010 MazdaSpeed 3. things got some pep and handles really nicely. Just gotta wait and see how much itll cost to insure.

Yeah, except for the guy who sold me my car and my mom her 2010 forester, everyone at the dealership is an asshole.

My sales guy was a retired engineer / owner of a local company before he worked at the dealership. I can't imagine them selling half as many cars without him there. We pulled into the lot in a rusted out 1994 pathfinder dressed as we normally do (whole my family is/was raised blue collar). And he walked right out and greeted us. Another couple came in, got ignored by the other sales people, and left.

Maybe it's a trend with stealerships but all of their pre-owned cars are listed at wayyyy above what they should be.

The only car that wasn't was the one that would become mine. 2005 (this was dec 08) 132,000 miles and was priced $1000 below bluebook/nada. It was on the lot for three months. Nobody wanted it.

i talked to the owner of the 2.5RS via email... the car has 214,000 miles on it. No thanks... I am not paying 3k for a car with that many miles. Now I see why it has been on craigslist for a while. The rear wheel wells are rusted...

gah.
