not if you wanna keep a warranty. especially with ford.

they just adopted a new law here in FL that allows police to check for a catalytic converter based and if it's absent, then suspend your license.

here in New York, if the car is after 1986, there has to be a catalytic converter. However, because we live in northern New York, we are exempt from tailpipe/emissions sniffers.
Now, with a car that is OBDII (1996 and newer), if the 'CHECK ENGINE' or 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' light is lit, they won't inspect it until whatever is setting it off is fixed.
BUT there is a loophole to that too... if you spend a certain amount of money trying to get the light to go out and still can't, you get a one year exemption on your inspection.

Ontario, if your check engine light is on, you have the option to have it scanned before your e test.

State of Oregon just cares if certain sensors are reported as ready on OBDII cars.

when you get your car inspected, the technician puts it on a lift and actually pulls a couple of wheels off, checks the brakes, exhaust system, suspension and fuel system (lines, tank). Once it's on the ground, he rolls it off the lift and up to a computer that gets plugged into the OBDII diagnostic port under the dash. Once plugged in, the computer in the car communicates with the computer in ALBANY... that's right, the State DMV master computer from hell actually interfaces the computer in your car. Simply pulling the bulb won't do it because the state knows whether or not the light has been tripped and what by...

Option? When I ran in Ontario I thought it was that a car with a check engine light could not be run on the e-test machine.

It can, the customer just has to be notified that their lights is on, and if they'd still like to have the car tested they can.
