LOL Good point! I remember when I had the shop that ran two techs all day Sunday, only shop in the city covering 300,000 people. Sure as shit, EVERY Sunday something would come in on a hook or a flatbed that someone started on Saturday and couldn't finish. Something seized or didn't have the right tools or stripped etc...etc.... LOVE IT! Thank you for your Patronage

Oil is the lifeblood of your car, I'd rather run butter in my engine than the bulk crap that comes from your local $20 quicklube.

bandi, do you know what brand of oil is used at the GM dealership for vehicles under warranty? do they use different for warranty vs. non warranty?

from what I have seen where my brother works, it all comes out of the same barrel. The synthetic oil changes (Cars like the Vettes, HHR SS, Cobalt SS) get their oil from the NAPA that is adjoined to the dealership. I stand there during my oil change...hell, yesterday, I helped my brother change the filter and fluid in the transmission of my Beretta. and I have to agree with Nismo on his last comment (how often does that happen?) and the comment by Bandi... OIL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO HAVE IN AN ENGINE. I am an oil snob... Royal Purple 10W-40 (it was recommended by Zekes Automotive in Lachine QC- they did all the SLP conversions on the Camaro SS and Firebird Firehawks back in the day) and either Valvoline MaxLife 10W-40 this Valvoline VR 10W-40 I found in Napa for the Beretta.

While I agree that you should use the best oil in hard working or high performance engines. But for the great unwashed masses regular sludge works fine for the way they drive and what they typically drive.
And Trent I know you were wanting an estimate but the majority of car guys here do most of their own work. I haven't used a mechanic in, damn, I can't remember. So I hope ya don't think of us as car snobs, we just have trouble letting other people mess with our own shit. I don't let anyone touch my Jeeps lol. And they are both beaters if ya think about it.

Same oil all the time (Castrol 5w30), unless it's a car that requires synthetic, then it's Castrol Syntec 5w30. And if it's an '08+ Pontiac Vibe, Castrol 5w20.

Look at the performance data out there on Synthetic; its a world of difference even. Synthetic evenly coats surfaces! That's a big plus!

I think the issue was resolved but what was with the problem of earlier synthetics and leaks. I remember around here that turned tons of folks off when they first became popular with the consumers

the issue with oils in aircooled automotive and aircraft engines has to do with the elimination of zinc in modern oils, it is not a dino/synthetic issue. there are some aircraft 20W50 engine oils commercially available which still contain zinc but I use regular Castrol 20W50 with GM's EOS oil supplement that replaces the zinc, or Brad Penn semi-synthetic 20W50 oil which also contains zinc. more detailed discussion here: http://www.thesamb...topic.php?t=220755

I admit, once in a while I go to a quick lube place. However, the place I go to is: 1. Run by a friend from HS who knows its a bad idea to screw me over 2. Is not too expensive and offers coupons. 3. Has name brand quality oil.

He's right about the SuperTech...its made by Shell. Interestingly enough, I spotted FRAM brand Synthetic Oil and I was thiking "Oh great, its probably made of Chinese Newspapers and Cheese" but a quick look at the label and its made by Chevron.
