I actually just did a bunch of research and settled on a D5100 as my first actually owned DSLR (since a tweaker jacked my big zoom compact a couple weeks back), then decided I may as well skip to the bottom of this thread and see what people were saying. Validation!

Lol this guy. Anyhow, I decided I'll just spend the extra two months and save a little bit more for a D3100. Great low light ISO, wider sensor, and 1080p at 24fps. So what's everyone opinions on buying used. I could spend almost 500 dollars for a new one, or about 290 for a used one. The one I was looking at was an open display model in a store. Are these genuinely good deals to get on, or am I just asking for problems?

Absolutely nothing wrong with buying used, just make sure you inspect it carefully. Check for scratches on the sensor, check the dials for play, check the actuation count, ensure you're buying a usa model and not greymarket, also ask for the manufacture date because you still may be within the 2yr window. Have you looked into it's successor the D3200 though? Similar price (of a new 3100)

Good idea. Hmm.. http://snapsort.co...200-vs-Nikon_D3100 Is it worth the extra 200 dollars tho? Do you think those specs would be worth the price gap? Or I've narrowed down both used and new cameras in both series.
New: Nikon D3100 18-55mm Lens $446.95 http://www.amazon....-5-6/dp/B003ZYF3LO Used: Nikon D3100 18-55mm Lens $332.00 http://www.amazon....TF8&condition=used New: Nikon D3200 18-55mm Lens $596.95 http://www.amazon....420&seller=&sr=8-1 Used: Nikon D3200 18-55mm Lens $495.00 http://www.amazon....420&seller=&sr=8-1
So I could buy the new D3100 without breaking the bank, or the used 3200 and take a gamble. Interesting..

Hey anyone have an opinion on which is better the Canon 60D or the 7D? I'm looking into cameras and those are recommended for my college course next year!

The 60D and 7D share the same sensor, so the performance that matters (high ISO noise, dynamic range, etc.) is identical. The 7D has a higher burst rate (8 vs. 5.3 frames per second) and better build quality, though. If I were you, I'd go for a Nikon D7100 (or used D7000), though. The build quality is decent (better than 60D, not quite as good as 7D) and the sensor is better in terms of high ISO noise and dynamic range.

The sensor and images produced from these cameras is very similar. The 7D has a lot of extra features over the 60D but its also larger and heavier. What do you plan on doing with the camera? The 7D has a better build quality, higher FPS, and better autofocus. The 60D will be smaller, lighter and have the articulating screen. It mostly comes down to which of those features benefits you more. Also worth noting the lenses you use with them will have a very dramatic effect on the quality of your pictures. An 18MP APS-C sensor is very demanding on your lenses and you'll want to use the best glass you can afford.

7D has a magnesium alloy body and faster frame rate 60D is smaller with a swivel screen. This body was suppose to be big. the 50D was such a bad ass camera. Im not impressed. Wished id have bought the 7D. It just feel like a rebel..

Buying used isn't much of a gamble if you're really careful.

All I have to say is go to a camera store, pick up both, see which one feels better in your hands, which has the layout and controls that you like. Because if you don't like how it handles, you won't use it.

I was in a similar situation, only I had a 7D. I hear you on the sf-s lenses and hesitating about upgrading to FF and having to almost start all over. Once Canon announced the 6D I was sold. So I bought the 6D and sold my 7D, 10-22, and Sigma 30mm 1.4. I'm in a unique position as a professional photographer to have a awesome business partner that has all L Series Lenses we would ever need that I can use any time. So even though my personal glass is down to just my 50 1.4 (gold anyway) I'm not left in the dark. But I will say I'm glad I decided to finally go FF, because now there's no going back. It's a tough commitment but worth it in the long run. In regards to the 6D specifically, it's pretty bad ass. I bougght 4 32gb cards right away too. The Wireless feature is awesome and works great. The GPS thing, is just eh to me. I have it shut off. But the best part of having those amazing FF images. And for $2099 that's a pretty affordable price point to be able to get into a FF body. I'm currently waiting for the grip to come off back order so the camera has a little more heft. Size wise it is almost IDENTICAL to the 7D when I compared them side by side but since the top is plastic (which by the way you can NOT tell. It feels like metal) it's a little lighter in weight then the 7D. I know that was kind of the point (FF in a more compact body) of the camera as well.
Anyway, good luck. I say FF.

I have what may seem like a stupid question, if you use manual focus in a dslr do you also have to set the ISO and apeture or not? Right now I am using a Fuji s1800 super zoom and for the most part it is ok for me but I want to do more dark shots and the lack of manual focus pisses me off to no end. This has me looking at upgrading. Thanks.

Yes, you do. In regard to your potential upgrade, which cameras are you considering?

Leaning toward the Nikon 5100 but nowhere near dead set. I would like to shoot wildlife as well a stationary objects. I also want decent telephoto/zoom capacity as I have found many shots I just can't frame with my current camera. I do understand that the lens plays a major role in things.

Any Nikon users on here have any issues with AF-S lenses? I was looking at the D5100, but im not sure I really like being limited by the AF-S motor requirements for glass. I currently shoot with a D40 with kit and a VR 55-200 AF-S.

Instead of the D5100, one could go for a used (or new, if you can find one cheap) D7000. It has the same sensor, but more features. Not only does it have a built-in AF motor, it also meters with good old manual focus lenses.

There is no slower autofocus system in the world than Nikon AF-S, at least with any of the lenses I've come in contact with.
