The only aspect where the D90 is better than the D5100 is the in-body AF motor.. that's it.

If you're just taking snapshots, or facebook pictures, or tripod photos sure.
But if you want to shoot sports with a 80-200 2.8 AFD ($800) on a D5100 you're out of luck. You could always buy the 70-200 2.8 VRii for $2,500.
Or if you want to shoot sports with the 300 2.8 AFD ($1,800) you're out of luck, but you can always get the AFS for only $6,000.
Or... you can get the slower focusing 50mm afs, slower focusing 85mm 1.8 afs, for twice the price as the faster AFDs.
Considering there is no AI tab on either, the D7000 is better than both.
Or a D300/s //etc.
Or shoot film. I've got a F4 and a FE both will take almost any nikon lens ever made. I have a few N80s even, and they will not vignette all that much with a crop lens.

The D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000, so.. same technical image quality (high ISO, dynamic range, etc.).

True, but how often do abandonments move about?

This lens you describe does not exist. You're probably referring to the first 300mm f/2.8 AF non-D.. if so, the autofocus speed on this lens is slooooow as fuck, anyway.

Does anybody have any experience with the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 non VC? There is one on Craigslist for $150 that i've had my eye on for awhile, seems like a pretty good lens for the price.

It's sharper than most equivalent zooms but it loses sorely to a good prime.

It easily competes with the canon or nikon top zooms.
I thought about selling my Tokina 35mm prime for this lens but reconsidered after seeing this:

Be careful that the lens hasn't been dropped or damaged at that price point though.

I found a Sears KS-1, a rebadged Ricoh XR-6, with both a kit lens and a 135mm telephoto for $10 at the thrift store yesterday.
Does anyone know what brand the lens is, besides Sears? It is a K-mount.
Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

D600 Full frame if the depreciation does not bother you. D700 full frame goes for $1200 on the bay now and will drop a bit more as the D600 delivery proceeds. or a D200 APS-C $400 it will meter AI converted, AI and AIS primes and still looks really good. I'm still using a D70! and use my iphone light meter app if I use some of my old AI or AIS primes. But may fave is an Epson R-D1x that I use with some really old Leica primes.

I have a hundred dollars to buy a lens, I'm looking into the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8. I don't know much about lenses, but mostly I shoot bands and architecture and stuff. Would this lens be good for me or does anybody have suggestions on something better within my price range?

The Canon 50mm f/1.8 is, like most 50's, a decent lens.. albeit a bit longish when used on APS-C bodies.
Try to find the first version of the lens with the metal mount and distance scale, the build quality (and arguably, the autofocus) is superior to the current Mk. II.

Which is around $200-300 for the mk I.
For between $200-500 there are so many good options without breaking the bank.
For ~$100, the 50/1.8 is the only thing in that price range worth buying.
It's sharp and is four stops faster than the kit lens.
I'd recommend:
Sharper, wider, all around better lens, marginally more expensive.

If you look hard enough, you can find one cheap enough used. Hell, I found the one pictured for $4.. and it even had an EOS 630 film body attached.

Yeah I read that the new one is made out of mostly plastic, but I guess I'll just have to settle for it. Thank you for the help though!
