I think the demographic that buys Toyota products for the most part is one of it's major downfalls. I heard a guy on a call in show regarding auto problems/issues call in because his Toyota camry odometer stopped at 299,999km. He wanted the dealer to replace the gauge cluster for free. The guys on the show said you got 300,000km plus out of this car, and you expected nothing to break? These are the types of people that buy cars for the most part, especially Toyota.

Remember awhile back Audi had issues with supposedly the throttles controlling themselves, accidents happening, and it was all driver error in the end. It hurt them though, the media just ran with it, and claimed it was the car, just like the owners did. Audi has bounced back, it took awhile though. Toyota will too.

Seems to me the same demographic purchases VW, and Honda.

But..when I go up north, or even to Niagara Falls, ON. I see a lot of chevy, ford, dodge trucks, I see guys driving old box crown vics. I see these guys actually going under the hood, doing maintenance, replacing parts, doing modifications, etc. In Orangeville, I see chicks driving giant trucks, I see they also know their stuff, and have way more knowledge than your classic metro sexual city boy. These girls grew up on farms, and have no qualms about wrenching on their own cars/trucks.

I don't think everyone should be a mechanic, but I think you should know that when a check engine light comes on, there are a few things you can check yourself, so you know atleast if it's the gas cap, no oil, or an o2 sensor or something. I don't expect people to pull over on the highway and change their timing belt, water pump, and tensioner though.

Delta body=

Saturn/Opel/Vauxhall Astra
Chevrolet Cobalt
Pontiac G5
Chevrolet HHR
Saturn Sky
Pontiac Solstice

they are all on the same chassis.

How are the Sky and Solstice on the same chassis? They're rear wheel drive with a longitudinally mounted engine and space frame construction like a Fiero.

And the Astra is soooooo loosely based on the Delta platform the Cobalt uses, it's an ENTIRELY different car and shares none of the problems the Cobalt/G5/HHR have.

Sky and Solstice are definitely Kappa platform. I remember joking with a buddy that they were certainly not the K-cars of Chrysler yore.

when they came out, the entire Cobalt crowds were salivating over the fact that it might be able to convert a cobalt to RWD because, according to several articles on another GM-centric site, the Sky/Solstice were sitting on the Delta platform. And then some motoring weenie magazine crowed about how versatile the Delta body was.

I take it that no one has done the conversion?

Was going in to work today and this revised version of "Cat Scratch Fever" (Ted Nugent) came to mind.

My car is tearing down the road completely out of control,
The throttle stuck open wide.

Screaming a loud curse at the top of my lungs
It's a hell of a fright.

It is Jap Scrap terror....

Wheel shaking hard almost out of my hands,
Shoulda bought the Chevy from next door,

Lines all a blur motor at a high whir
Looks like I'm really done for.

It is Jap Scrap terror...

It may be 'funny' how Toyota is currently being destroyed however it's unfortunate for all the local employees. Especially with the new plant in my hometown... I certainly hope Toyota can dig themselves out of this mess.

they are still going to build cars, but they'll never be as smug or pompous as they once were. this is karma, or at least evidence of karma.
