my cavalier suddenly has a noise from the right passenger side. only when i hit bumps at low speed and not all the time, ive lifted the car and the balljoint seems solid, it sounds like a loose hubcap style noise. anyways, anyone have ideas, its very intermittant. At highway speed i can hit bumps and there is no noise.

just spoke to a gm tech buddy, top end bearings in these cars make noise, gonna put it on the lift monday and spray it with cheetah

my gm tech buddy took it for a road test, 90% sure its top end, ive had bearings go, i know that sound!

get used to it... they are referred to as "strut bearings" and in the cold make the front end sound like it is falling out. You can replace it, or just deal with the noise...

i noticed, it gets worse when its cold, it may be my winter car, but otherwise runs so nice, my sunfire only did it after the spring broke. When it gets warmer ill take the whole strut assembly out of the sunfire. i replaced it last year and it came out of an 05.

my woman is getting really discouraged. i live in the burbs, i have an 01 sunfire, and 01 cavalier (both 'stored') in various states of disassembly, a 97 grand prix and my 03 cavalier in the driveway, barely enough room for her optra

Optra... did she get a free toaster with that car?
The strut bearing is one of those things that just makes noise... you can get the kit from Monroe for like $60-$97US, but what's the point... it will just clunk again when it gets cold. I drove my 98 Cavalier for years with the winter clunk... even this Beretta has the winter clunk.

The only issue with that is I've found J-Bodies tend to break coil springs once the bearing gets really bad.

I find the best preventative maintenance thing for the bearings is to pour a bit of ATF onto the top of the strut at every oil change. Seems to work pretty well.

i used this stuff I swiped from where I used to work... it was called "Lubriplate"... it was for plastic injection molding molds. Worked well enough, the clunk wasn;t so clunk.

Sam even I laughed a little. Us Jeep folks are the same. We look past the many flaws for love of the brand. EVERYONE on here does the same. There is no perfect vehicle.

Interesting on the ATF for the struts. I have some 180? weight extremely sticky glue like stuff that is sold as an engine additive to quiet lifters, reduce oil consumption etc. Maybe that would work even better. It's not Slick 50, no Teflon, can't remember, it seems to help a bit in the 80 Chev 350 Pickup. (White bottle with a tapered top)
