I was JUST talking about a Vanishing Point remake with my co-worker!

To be REALLY accurate, they could have the smoldering carcass of a new Camaro smeared on the bulldozer at the end of the movie, too.

(In the original, the totalled car at the end of the movie was a Camaro, not a Challenger)

it was a 68 Camaro with no engine towed by the one Challenger that had a 383/727 TQF automatic.
and yes, it was a spectacular ending...

That film is a massive classic. Dirty Larry Crazy Mary was another road flick of the time, but I can't think of any other road movie that can touch Vanishing Point, except Two Lane Blacktop.

Don't mind my venting last night, Going through some family stuff, (which is getting better) and didn't mean to be a dick.

I like the New Beetle, and the new muscle cars will find their niche. They are cool in their own way, and will keep the 70's memories going for a lot of people, and provide retro fun for younger people.

GM used to be an incredibly visionary standard setting corp. They may well recover, but will need to pull some kind of rabbit, (okay, been done by VW) say badger out of their hat fast.

And when you like the old muscle cars so much, it makes the new ones have to really earn the respect of walking in the treads of the originals.

There are only two I can think of: Bullitt, and "The Driver". Not too many people have heard of The Driver, but it's one of the best movies I've ever seen, with a few incredible car chases.

Big time all good, lol, we need a road movies thread. The Driver is rare, I liked it but don't like Ryan ONeal. Bruce Dern is more my kinda guy. I bond with guys with depth and head problems. Dennis Hopper is my hero. I won't waste time putting Ryan down here. And he is likable is some ways, and an effing lot more succesful that me, it's just one of those rub ya the wrong way things, he's smarmy.

French Connection, that car chase, and Bullit are off the charts. The rumor was, maybe still is; Paul blew at least three *trannies doing the reverse scene in Bullit. San Francisco + airborne V8's = win.

The original Italian Job and Grand Prix impressed me as a kid. The old Love Bug films, the first at least, knew how to push the buttons. But really, what road movie became a political force, and changed peoples perception and way of thinking more than any other?

Easy Rider.

Star writer and actor: Dennis Hopper...

Cheers

*transmissions for the pervs, not the other kind.

P.S. Anyone remember Thunder Bolt and Lightfoot? Rabbits in the trunk, Idaho...

no offense taken, Alien...

the French Connection was an incredible chase, as was The Seven Ups. The beating that old Venture took... awesome.

I went looking for these movies at FYE over the weekend... the kids that worked there were looking at me like I was speaking a foreign language.

For contemporary movies, it was hard to beat Ronin for it's chases.

As a sidebar to Nismos' comment... I don't think that catch-up is the right word. I think that GM is reinventing itself. It was bound to happen... if not now, some time down the road. GM as a company has needed this shake up since at least 1984. It's been long overdue.

Management has always always always been the achilles heel of GM... too many managers making bad decisions trying to look good for saving a buck here or there... the cars suffer, the reputation falters and someone goes across the street to another dealer. I really think that in the middle of 2008, that message was getting through.

My only bitch is that goddamn Chevy Cruze. I hate it.

In the original Italian Job, there's an incredible INCREDIBLE deleted scene where the 3 Minis and 3 Alfa police cars are basically doing a ballet... it's perfectly choreographed, it's about 5 minutes long and I can't believe they cut it from the movie.

And don't get me started on Herbie movies, I'll never shut up. Especially the first one.

It scares me. It's another rebadged Daewoo, and that's not what GM needs right now.

i agree.
honestly, and Bandi you work at GM dealer, what's wrong with the Cobalt?
I know that, for some weird reason, the 2006's were put together like crap, but my 2005 and 2007 have been absolutely reliable and trouble free... i have heard very little complaints on cobaltss.net about the 08's and 09's, too. Why kill the car off now and replace it with stupid fucking Cruze?

The Cobalt has a ton of little problems... mostly related to front end rattles (Control arm bushings, intermediate steering shafts and sway bar links), there are about 40 bulletins out on that stuff, but there's nothing truly wrong with the cars. Some years had cylinder head issues, but it's all pretty much covered under warranty/good will.

I would imagine the Cruz is going to use press in front hubs like all the other Daewoo stuff (which fail chronically and are a bitch to change), and will basically just fall apart like the rest of the Daewoo stuff we have (Aveo/Wave/Epica/Optra)

with the control arm bushings, that was a base car issue. My 2005 never had that problem... the only thing that the 2007 SS has was the sway bar links loosened up from the baja course roads I have to drive on. GM replaced them, even after my warranty had expired.

Honestly, what is the GM high command thinking? Daewoo couldn't sell cars here in 2000-2001 because they were flaming piles of shit and now they're going to sell their cars with a Chevrolet tag on them? Genius. Utter genius.

FINALLY saw one of these in person. Much better than I expected! In fact, I like it a lot. Not one of the beauty shots of this car has appealed to me at all... especially any of the shots of the ass-end. But seeing it in person was entirely different, and I really want one now.

Any word on how well they fit big people? I'm 6'6" and 300 lbs... so it's a squeeze for me to get into most cars. (Although my mom's Mustang was more comfortable than I expected because your legs stay pretty straight in the long foot wells.)

I'm really tempted to go test drive one for fun... or rent one, maybe. We've got some good roads out here to go fast on.
