Listen. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right?

Might be the cats seek shelter there, and there's sure be rodents, birds, etc. for them to eat. Probably were friendly too; easy catch. Maybe pets brought there. Sick bastards.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Found this last week. Not so much disgusting as it is just sad. :(
Close-up:
This was in an old manufacturing plant here in Western NY. There was the usual assortment of 55-gallon drums, most of which were filled with various junk. This one, as you can see, was mostly empty, and when this poor little guy fell in, he couldn't climb out. And yes - I double and triple checked.. he was dead. What is more upsetting about this is that I had spotted this location from the road about a week prior. Given that his condition isn't too bad (no decay, not even an odor), I had to wonder if I might've been able to rescue him had I gone in the week before... Ironically, this very thing happened to me last year behind my house. The local racoon brigade had dumped my trash, and I cleaned up (always wear gloves when doing that, kids - rabies and all), dumped everything back in the garbage can, then went to dump a new bag in an empty can, and found one of these little buggers in the bottom of the can, looking up at me forlornly. Apparently, he had knocked the other can over, then promptly fell backwards into the empty one. This happened during the height of summer, so by the time I found him, he was completely dehydrated and listless. When I dragged the empty can back to the edge of the woods and turned it sideways, he just sort of ambled out slowly and wandered away into the bushes. And then there was the house with the live porcupine in it that I visited today.. but that's a whole different story... TMiB

thats incredibly sad but at the same time its hard for me to feel sorry for racoons sometimes after the things they do to my garbage on garbage day, they just tear the bags open and scatter everything onto the curb, so when i get up theres a nice litte 'surprise' waiting for me... garbage cans make good traps is the moral of the story....right?
can we hear the story with the porcupine?

How about "Garbage cans make good receptacles for your garbage". Might also keep the racoons from scattering it. Forgive me, but it seems a bit cold to wish the death of something just because it eats your garbage. This, of course, comes from a guy who catches and releases bugs from his home. But the point is still valid.

The porcupine story goes back to this post, my first ever on UER. http://www.uer.ca/...rpage=9&pp#post174 Partially excerpted here: So I stood there, looking down toward the front of the house, wondering if maybe I could try to get to the front door, when I heard it. It wasn't the chittering sound of a woodland animal or the footsteps of someone approaching from within the house.. it was just a large THUD, like Frankenstein taking a heavy step. I don't want to say the house shook, but it was loud.
In any event - I revisited this park, and this house, just yesterday. With the advantage of time, I began to wonder if the sound I'd heard was really all that loud.. and in any event, this location and day were perfect - parking in an adjacent state park, bright sunshine, no neighbors. So yesterday I was outside, standing in the high weeds, taking pictures of the exterior, some junk in the yard, etc, when I began hearing the crack of branches approaching me through the brush. I just casually kept taking pictures, and just figured I'd greet whomever it was and show them the camera, the usual spiel. The crack of branches and the rustle of leaves drew closer.. surely I should be able to see somebody by now.. until the sounds were practically in front of me, maybe five feet away. What the heck.. Then I looked down.. and about 5 feet away from me was the biggest porcupine I'd ever seen. Of course, I've only seen two of them, but that's beside the point. He wandered close to the house, then disappeared under some brush. So, I took the long, circular route around the place where he'd disappeared, and found the front door completely ajar. I entered, and after my eyes adjusted, realized that I'd found one of "those" houses - it was just full of treasure: old-time black and white portraits on the wall, a stack of old trophies, school pictures, about 15-20 chairs in various stages of disrepair, old-fashioned toys.. it was wild. It was while I was soaking this all in that I heard, once again.. a thud. Looking slowly to my right, I spotted it - the thing that had likely made me scamper away like a little girl last year, and the thing that had scared the bejesus out of me.. it was right in front of me, atop a piece of furniture. It was the damned porcupine.
Apparently he liked to wander about in here. It's possible that he lives upstairs, because where I found him, he was right next to an exposed beam, where it met a hole in the ceiling. Anyway, I explored most of the house, the whole time under the watchful eye (and quills) of Porcy. He never moved the whole time I was there, and seemed to observe me with a "What the heck is this guy doing?" sort of look. I was unable to go upstairs or to the basement, as he sat almost directly in front of the door to those places. So there you go, the Porcupine Story. Or, more to the point, the "TMiB scares too easily" story. TMiB Oh, PS - as for the window that I had tried to raise, and got stuck.. and that mysteriously was lowered a few months later.. from the names on the mail and such I found in the building, it seems that the people that once lived there might be using the site now for storage.. though it is the poorest excuse for storage I've ever seen.. stuff is everywhere. Shrug.

Posted by Jonsered Oryx near Brice. Someone had been kind enough to saw off his horns and remove his genitalia. Fairly bloated from the sun as well. Almost made me have a salad for lunch. Almost.

This one unfortunately was well gone from the sun and heat, but they ARE delicious! I was lucky enough to get in on the annual cull hunt the Air Force does on the base. Mine came in a bit over 350 pounds and tates a little like elk, but with the gaminess of Antelope thrown in. And the hide looks killer on my gun cabinet!
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

That is a great story, i remember telling people i knew about your other story which involved a loud thud, and everyone there kept telling me it could've been the wind or some animal/person or something...now the mystery is solved.
and the solution to stopping animal from getting trapped in garbage bins is to put a lid ontop and a brick or have one of those locking garbage bins...yes it was cruel but still i stand by it. great story. |

I haven't come across anything too crazy yet. Porn has been in a couple buildings, one building had an empty douche box...along with some new looking christmas decorations in a few rooms (apparently someone decided to have their christmas in the place). Then recently during a "scouting" drive, a friend and I came across a dead dog in a 2/3 abandoned complex. Didn't look dead at first, then we drove around and realized it really was. Heavily bloated, half wrapped in a blanket and apparently someone decided to put a beer bottle up against it.

I really think no one should have been on BlackHawk's case about those “cat in the bag pics”. They were disturbing true, but it was fully within the parameters of this thread. Members were asked for a disturbing story and he had one. If people can’t handle that, they need to stay off threads of this nature. My own personal opinion, for what it’s worth , is that the giant pics of the cat on the subway tracks were far more disturbing. Why? because at least the bag pics gave us the choice of whether or not we wanted to expand the thumbs he posted, (no offensive BlackHawk, I chose not to.) The cat on the tracks didn’t give me that option. I also think I understand why he took the pics too. As much as nobody normal wants to see that kind of thing, maybe if it’s documented the death doesn’t have to be as meaningless. Others will know what kind of people they could potentially be up against and take the appropriate safeguards.
