Don't know how things work down there but up here the security guard (or anyone) can place you under citizens arrest and then use whatever force is necessary to hold you until the police arrive.

Security is only given the A-O.K to use a citizen's arrest under like the most severe of circumstances. Like, if you see someone commit a felony and they might harm someone or you. Other than that we're told not to do a damn thing and let them go and call the cops.

Security companies would rather deal with an angry property manager than say, the injury or death of a guard. So unless you're torching a place it's very unlikely they'll attempt to detail you.

Now that said there are some companies that hire trained/certified guards that can carry weapons and react physically. But the general ones are pretty harmless.

Greetings,

Wait a second? You are asking if a Banana is worth it?

A Banana, Nature's scale.

A Minion's favorite thing.

Yes, a Banana is always worth it. Now the contents of the register and all of that, no, it is safer to let em go. But a BANANA is always worth it.

Have fun,

Hugh

As most people said, be polite and honest but don't be OVER polite. There's a reason why the cops say "anything you say can and will be used against you..." when you're arrested. Don't yap too much or offer up information that wasn't asked for specifically cause it might come back to bite you in the ass.

Agreed. A friend and I got caught exiting the property of an old jail. The cop did not actually see us within the fence, but saw us as we were walking away. He called us over to his car, saw our cameras, and new we were not up to anything bad. We put on our "clueless women" faces, were very polite, and gave information as he asked....EXCEPT that we had been inside. He didn't ask, we didn't tell. We walked away with only warnings, but I think that is partly because he had no proof we had been within the "No Trespassing" zone. Who knows? He was pretty cool. Just be cool, and the cop will probably be, too.

Arrest and detainment laws in the US are always going to vary by the state (and maybe even local laws, but I'm not sure on that). Here in Washington state, a citizen's arrest can be made by anyone who personally witnesses the commission of a misdemeanor or felony. As many people here have said, however, most contract security companies have policies prohibiting their guards from detaining people or making citizen's arrests. If you are going to be run down and tackled by employees of an active site, it's probably more likely they will be construction workers, or janitors, or something like that.

As to the shoplifter thing, what I did a few times as a security guard was just stomp up to the person, give them a serious ugly eye, and grab the stolen shit right out of their hands. Once it was a bag of CD's, and the other time it was a fancy electric folding bicycle from Sharper Image. Both times, the thief tried to argue that I was seizing their personal property, and both times I just told them "If I'm stealing from you, let's just call the police." Both times the guy ended up leaving with his tail tucked between his legs.

I imagine my employer company wouldn't like me doing that, since it's a bit confrontational. The guys in our client's property management office loved it though, and since they were the ones paying the bills, I was allowed to use my own discretion.

Security? I run like hell, they are not allowed to detain you. The police? I am 100% honest with them tell them exactly what I'm doing, I show all of my photos. I've been caught by police twice. Both times they ran me for warrants and then let me go when I was clean.

I don't know if you were being literal with "run like hell", but as a general guideline, it's not a good idea to run. If the cops show up before you get away and you're running, you're likely to be immediately arrested. It just makes you look shady and creates more problems than it solves. It's best to just politely tell security that you're leaving, and then walk away.

Yeah no need to run from security, just walk away normally. Running is the most obvious expression of guilt.

I've done everything in this thread listed and have gotten away every time. From running from police, running from security, walking up to and talking to both, walking away from security and jumping out a window, waving to security as I entered the steam tunnels, bombing the security truck with empty beer bottles from the rooftop of an abandoned insane asylum, hid in the dark, hid in a closet, hid in an attic, hid in an elevator motor room, hid under a desk, yelled threateningly with murderous epithets and watched the security run away from me... even sat in a couple of patrol cars only to be let free and once given my knife and bag of weed back. I don't have an arrest record and I'm always polite to Police. I also always find a way to mention my old man was a 30 year vet of the Philly fire dept. and the police usually comment positively at that. I respect the police and their stressful, dangerous job. Most times it's just another guy or gal like you and I with a shitty job, raising a family and paying bills like every other person.

Security? All bets are off for those fucking boneheads.

Ouch, I'm hurt. Nah, it's not secret that no matter where you go at least in the U.S security guards are either of three categories

1) Don't pay attention and won't care
2) Care a bit too much and have a power complex
3) Do their job but as long as you're not breaking shit or being an asshole they'll let you do whatever.

No matter the category as long as they didn't call the cops you can walk away.

I actually have a friend that works at a office supply store and I had her make me like 50 business cards with my name and a made up business name and my title says lead photographer and location scout. I made them for just such an occasion and you wouldn't believe how well it works. I got caught about halfway over a fence at a new construction of a hotel to go rooftop and the cop pulled up all yelling about trespassing so I gave him my card and said I worked for this company and I was scouting a location for a photoshoot and he looked the card over, then get this, asked if he could keep it and maybe use my services later. This has saved my ass around 6 times so far. So simple but it works

Strategy is usually this:

-Private security, not being a dick: try to befriend them, might get me back in, later - or at least gain me some intel. It's worked at demo sites with college kids working a shitty job.

-Private security being a dick: make 'em run.

-Cops: they're looking for people causing trouble. From my experiences: be cool and straightforward with them - try to convince them you're on their side ("hey, things get bad you're the ones we're gonna call") - and usually they'll let you go about your business. Worst I've had was a frisk at Dixie Square Mall on arrival, but he was totally cool once he saw the camera equipment.

Business cards do help; makes you seem a tad more legit/not there to cause trouble.

I'm going to give my two cents because I actually have been a security guard in NY. Whenever we caught people trespassing we pretty much always gave them a slap on the wrist and told them to leave.

It was when people ran or got caught breaking things that we were more aggressive. If you're breaking things, lighting fires, picking locks, etc, you're going to have a lot more aggressiveness coming out of security. It's best to just tell the truth and for the love of god do not run!

The second you start running we pretty much always called for police and the area becomes very hot with security. If you get caught just tell the truth.

That's fantastic! Did he ever end up calling? Sounds like you could have a little side business on your hands haha.

No he himself hasn't called but some other person that had the luck of catching me and getting the card called me about doing family portraits for Thanksgiving. I was kinda dumbfounded and told her that portraits aren't really my expertise and referred her to a guy here that does amazing portraits. Guess I should practice more

The only time I even got a ticket, there was people getting high in the building, and also spray painting. The cop came in through a window, and scared the living shit out of me in the middle of a photograph. He admitted the only reason I got the ticket was because there were other people there. Then I got the entire lecture about how being a girl and in an area with men who could take advantage, and "No one could hear me scream." thanks officer.

But in all honesty, just walk up to them and chat. Chatting shows that you don't believe you've done anything wrong, and that you're not showing guilt. Try not to lie. I always just say I was looking around and taking pictures. But the horde of cameras that come with me makes that super believable.

Got caught by a cop/hospital security last night. We were respectfully and answered all his questions and he checked if we were wanted or if we had priors and told us to never come back to that spot. There were a lot of threats made about how he could arrest us and we were lucky he wasn't but in the end we were free to go.
