The Astrodome

Hi,

Very long time lurker, finally signed up. I truly enjoy the art of what you guys do, and while I've done a few explores I'm just not sure that I'm brave/adventurous enough to do what you do!

In any case, that's not why I started a new thread.

Has anyone reached out to anyone with Harris County/NRG about the Astrodome? I know there was a media tour/access a few years ago, and I enjoyed those pictures, but I'm wondering if anyone has reached out in recent times to get a look at what the building looks like? I was down there a few months ago, and didn't realize that the spiral ramps had all been removed (strange seeing level after level of doors on the outside of the building that literally open up to nothing!)

As the "Eighth Wonder Of The World", I have to imagine that if they do decided to just blow it up (rather than try to fool themselves into the 359th version of rehabbing/repurposing it) it'd be neat to have one final look around.

Here's a recent article on the building http://online.wsj....ng-ball-1410285924

Thanks for taking the time, and thanks for this community - I enjoy all of your work, and humor!

Yeah, there has been some discussion about the Dome just recently, mostly speculation and stuff, but I haven't heard anything about anyone trying to contact the owners. I'm with you, though, it'd really make me happy to see the inside of it one last time before they do whatever it is that they're going to do with it, and getting in touch with the owner and seeing about getting permission can't hurt. It might just be the most trouble-free way of doing it.

I'm willing to reach out if there are enough people, way more accomplished than me (at photography, specifically), interested in getting permission to go in. I read that the media, a few years ago, had to sign several waivers (because of mold etc)...obviously I'd be willing to do that, as I'm sure any of you pros would!

That place is security heavy, so I hear. I doubt one could get permission to enter the premises and photograph it just because you asked nicely. You may be better off getting in there when the football season is over. Let me know if you ever want to give it a try; 2 heads are better than 1. I will fearlessly join you.

I am definitely in, as well. Simply for the record, I'm really only interested in permission-based exploration of the place at the moment.

Do we know for a fact that the place is still owned by NRG? I have a friend who works for them, albeit not in any capacity to make any decisions. Still, he may have some ideas on who we should contact, and how we should contact them to make a good impression.

I didn't really think about the fact that it's football season, but I wonder if that will really matter (assuming that at whatever time we want to go it is not being operated), as it is kind of on its own campus.

i tried contacting somebody about 2 months ago and never got an email back. I even included where I work and still no answer. I talked to Harris County and they supplied me with who to talk to. I may try again sometime soon. I just have to dig for the email.

If you're successful, you know who to invite...or else. Ha.

It's a no go. They aren't allowing any access as of right now.

Who did you speak with, exactly? The county, NRG, or both?

I almost think that an effort to reach the county judge might do some good-especially if you positioned it as a way to rally support for his plans to not knock it down.

Dammit. I really wanted to get a look with the benefit of permission. :[

Thanks for giving it a try, Tarrant. I may still pursue this, but don't anybody count on me. Either way, I really want to check it out before it gets remodeled/blowed up. If anyone finds any news, please do update the rest of us.

Indeed you are! Exploring with you is always a thrill because we both have that intrepid momentum set to GO.

As for this place, from what I've seen,
I'll play it safe and lay low FOR NOW. It is pretty active since it's foosball season, despite it not being where the athletes actually play. GRHH

Then again, you know me:
TOUJOURS PRET.

i actually emailed the women who organized the last media day and never received a response. I had a friend who received a email invite to the media day and couldn't make it and I was on the road a also was not able to attend so I emailed the contact to see about arranging another time. Good luck with permission access. Your best bet is to try n sneak in during an adjacent event or bribe/sweet talk security.

Bump. Definitely more feasible in the offseason. I know a number of people, including my brother, who have been inside during that time period. A little security they said, but nothing any of us couldn't handle. I've been on hiatus lately and am looking to get back into exploration. Would be seriously interested in the prospect of this before the renovation/destruction.
