I used to think the same way as I have two pair of those for work. Whenever I crouch or drop to one knee to snap a shot, the upper ridge of the steel plate digs into my instep and hurts like fuck-all. They're good for work but I prefer a soft toe for exploring. I've never had the need for a steel toe while exploring and have never been injured for the lack of it.

This is the whole thing for me. I can't find a boot that has a steel sole but no steel toe. You can get steel toe without steel sole, but not vice versa.
edit: The first and last time I went out with my DCs, I stepped on a nail. Luckily it didn't cut skin, but it hurt like fookin hell. So I wear my boots now. I'd take the toe cap out, but they are brand new $220 boots. lol

unlighted-zero, those a shmexy. What company made them? I might need to look into a pair for industrial concert reasons >.> I mean, heavy duty walking on stuff reasons and definitely not being prepared to defend myself from a mosh pit. <.<
This, but for me, the addition of a steel sole plate is needed. Steel Toe boots ftw.
Steel FTL these days. Get a safety shoe that uses composite materials instead. Much lighter, non-conductive, and doesn't transmit cold - all while being just as tough (or tougher). They're pricier, but well worth it.
That said, I get a yearly boot allowance of $150 each year from work, even tho my boots tend to last 2 years.

These are my favorite pair of shoes for running, climbing, and general mayhem. I originally bought them for hiking in Hawaii since most of the trails are muddy or slippery. The grip one these shoes is amazing. There are a few variations with the same soul, these are for trail running. The others are more more like hiking boots but I hate wearing heavy shoes - I feel restricted and can't move as well.

Believe it or not, ive stepped on a few nails, always the 3" rusty roofing type & since then, ive actually made a pair of steel insoles from 18ga sheet & some piano hinge. Nothing short of a bouncing betty would bother me but you do have to have regular padded insoles over top of them

ok, i exaggerated a tad, but they're damn near bulletproof as far as UE goes. They're not the most comfortable things but I might make a pair of kydex ones but I'd have to make a mold first & I don't have any mold making supplies atm, not even plaster of paris so they might be a ways off
I used the correct german word for the "bouncing betty" thank you very much. And kydex shanks? interesting you shouldn't need a mold just heat it up put it in the shoe put the pad in stand in them while it cools off and should be good.

Haven't done any kydex work previously & I know you would normally need to heat it then press it. I could heat it, put in my boot & stick my foot on it but my feet are somewhat sensitive to heat. Not only that but the kydex would be too cool by the time I got it in the boots & shoved my foot down on it. Id probably use .093 or .125 for more strength & a shallow pan with plaster for a mold

Kydex retains heat pretty well and thats why I said put the insole over it.

How do those feel compared to running trainers, flats, climbing shoes, or any other shoe in that category? I feel like those would be pretty great for climbing fences, shimmying on a ledge or anything else that requires foot agility. Also how sturdy do the bottoms feel, do they flex much? This is definitely a shoe I may want to invest in.
