Automotive Anxiety

I have been keeping this under wraps for a couple of months now, but I have been having some trouble with my Cruze. When I washed it back in April (the first big spring detail), i noticed that the paint had been sandblasted off the car, moreso than should a car with only 13,000 miles on it. So, I got on CruzeTalk.com and sure enough, there was a TSB out with relation to paint issues relevant to what my car was experiencing. So I arranged to have the car painted.

On the fateful day the car was to be painted, their paintshop (at a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealer- owned by the same family as the Chevrolet dealer) guy was sick and couldn't do the work, so because of work, I had to postpone the work until mid-May. Well, I dropped the car off last monday to have the sandblasted areas painted (or so I thought). These areas included the rockers on both side, the lower door lip (like an inch up the door) and the TSB areas on the rear doors and quarter panel.

So, first thing that happens is that I refuse to take this piece of shit 02 Chevy Tracker 4x2 as a loaner. It's got 90,000 miles on it, is filthy inside and the outside looks like its been nine rounds with a trailer park. So, they hem and haw and insist that I take the car. When I refuse, they come back with a 2011 Cruze 1LT with 30,000 miles that had just been traded... in ever-sporting beige, er gold mist metallic.

A week goes by and I pick the car up Friday, in a monsoon, and I can tell just walking up to the car they did a)a half-assed job and b)they didn't do half the work on the car that I requested. On top of that, after washing it on Monday, I find that the body tech got all sorts of body prep materials on the interior of the car and trunk, never bothering to clean up his mess. That's the icing on the cake as far as I am concerned. I leave with the car and figure i'll take it back up with them today, after the memorial day weekend. I go back to the dealership this morning and this bitch of a service manager, who talks to me like I am a child, tells me that it's just 'overspray' and that GM is not going to cover the sandblasted rocker panels and I had better just suck it up and deal with it. Oh and if I had a problem with the job the body guy did, I need to take it up with them.

I am furious at this point, but rather than make a scene or say things that might be best left unsaid, I leave, head home and jump on the forum, getting in contact with the customer service representative handling my problem. She tells me that they're going to call this service manager tomorrow. That's swell because this bitch can lie through her teeth with the best of them. I am pissed beyond words... Correct me if I am wrong, but paint should NOT come off a car at 13,000 miles? Right? I have a legitimate axe to grind here, right? 3years-36,000 miles bumper to bumper warrant means shit like this?

my Cobalt, at 113,000 miles, didn't have even a quarter of the issues this car is having with stupid issues.

Oh and one other thing, I have looked at 12 other Cruze models from 2011 and 2012, all LT trim and their paints are doing the same thing. My mom's 2011 Cruze Eco is not.

I think I am going to get stuck on this and have fix this shit myself.

I'd be ticked myself too. Wish I could help. We've just switched over our paint shop at work to water based, I think the quality is terrible personally. I've known a couple people with Ford Fusions that had some what of the same problem. A friend that worked at the Ford St. Thomas Assembly paint shop said it was possible they were paint repair jobs done real poorly. Maybe you've gone a problem like that.

My brother in law just bought a cruz. I'm going to have to look into these shotty paint jobs. Sam, you would never get this sloppy build quality from a European / Japanese car company .

I'd maybe go one step higher with your complaints- after working for GM I learned they will suck any customer's weenie (eventually) to keep them happy, and this is a legitimate complaint. Most stuff we had to deal with wasn't. Just mention buying a Ford instead. They'll kiss your ass.

(In a slightly related post, yesterday I had a customer bring in an '02 Jetta which he had spraypainted himself. He wanted to know about his paint warranty.)

i knew you were going to say that, ya shitsack!

Honestly, it does appear to be a two-fer problem; door alignment and paint application. So far, the GM Customer Reps I've talked to online have been helpful, but the customer service manager at the dealership has been a total bitch. I mean, she's acting like the money for the job is coming out of her pocket. My brother worked at this dealer for almost 10 years and what he's told me is that she is too lazy to process the warranty claim.

On a brighter note, my brother is pissed over the entire situation, so he calls one of the salesman (his wife babysits for this guy), goes up one side and down the other and basically tells him, 'look, out family has bought several cars from you people. you fuck my brother on this deal, we'll never buy anything from you again." I know that sounds like a hollow and somewhat childish threat, but up here, so far away from the world, you fuck one person, you're fucking their entire family and everyone they knew and now your sales just took a shit because of it. People don't forgive or forget up here.

Not five minutes passes after my brother calls then the salesman that sold me the car calls me back and wants to know what's wrong with the car and what he can do to help. I kept my temper in check for most of the call, but towards the end I let it fly that the service manager was the fucking problem and she was doing her damndest to fuck me over on the damage to the car. He hit me with a feeble defense that they have seen paint be damaged in that little time. And that was when I fucking exploded. I've been around cars since I was 12 years old. I have been into cars since I was 17 and know my way around them. Sorry, but paint doesn't get etched off a car in 13,000 fucking miles. Not even a piece of shit Kia will do that.

As much as I hate to say this, but if this dealership fucks me over, my next car will be a Ford or a Honda.

Seriously, though, Sleeper, what trim level is your brothers' car? Is it a 1- or 2LT? Or an LTZ?

these cars are running a smaller tire, like the Eco models. My mom's car isn't doing it, either.

As a funny haha, my salesman called me this morning and told me bring the car out to the bodyshop manager, show him exactly what needs to be repaired and when i can have it done and all will be taken care of. Subscript to this story, the service manager is on thin fucking ice.

This really isn't the dealerships fault, I think you need to go through GM directly and express your disappointment with there product.

Ive seen it too with alot of the new japanese cars as well, sand blasted front ends after a year. Probably something to do with those shitty eco friendly paints.

My S4 has rust all around the fender, like a pierced hole and then some, scumbag audi canada refuses to warranty it because they said its caused by road debris. I dont have time to waste fighting audi since I need the car ready for car shows, at 29.00 a fender plus 50 bucks paint Ill suck it up.

it IS and ISN'T the dealerships fault. This service manager has screwed more people over in the 9 years I've known her than you can believe. It's catching up to her now because GM (at least from my experience) wants to be a brand you buy not because it's cheap, but because it's a good car. They want a Japanese-like experience and their dealer network has ALWAYS been their Achilles Heel.
So now, instead of just blindly taking the service writers' word as gospel, they're looking at cases a little closer. In a case like mine, clearly there is a manufacturing issue with the car therefore it should be dealt with by the company through the dealer.

On a completely personal note, I just this bitch has an axe to grind with me because of my brother.

My Astra has had paint issues since almost new. If you think you're getting crappy treatment with a Chevy at a Chevy dealer, try having a Saturn worked on. I stopped caring, but I won't but a new GM and expect the paint to stay on it.

This does seem to be an every car issue, like what was happening when they went to water based paints. Maybe in another 5 years paints will stick again.

Could be worse, you could have a Chrysler from the 80s to like 2000 and in two years have the clear coat fall off.

Yeah, my '85 GLH, '95 Dodge Ram and '85 Laser XT had no paint on horizontal surfaces.

Ironically, the black '86 2.2 carbed base model (No headrests, no 3rd row seat, 1 speaker AM radio with a digital tuner) Caravan my dad owned had fully intact, shiny paint when we got rid of it in '01. Black Dodges were the WORST for losing all their paint. My dad's secret? Never wash it.

I saw the van last year... we sold it at 485,000 km and the only repairs had been done were 2 rads and an alternator. It's gone to florida and back twice every year since then and still looks fantastic. Didn't even have tailgate rust yet.

I miss that thing. I used to take it on tours when my parents went away before I had my license.

That's about $18 damage if you go to my local scrapyard and there's one the same color. There were about 20 of them last time I was there.

HOWEVER... people who do that and take off deserved to be murdered with a crowbar.

He almost got away. Until I got out and looked at the damage. He begged us not to file a police report. So...can you say insurance claim? It was his fault too.

I was ready to just go junkyard the parts until he tried to get away. So...let's let him suffer. It's on his wallet now.

It isn't like the car is worth much, but it's still a car we take care of and to have that dick ruin it by backing his SUV with a trailer hitch on it into the car pissed me off. He got no damage because he hit me with a trailer hitch and not the escalade it was attached to.

The one thing I know right now is that GM is coming down hard on dealers that are not doing their job for the customer. Out my way here in Oregon, Carr Chevy because it had the highest complaints from 2009 to 2011, GM decided to re-open a dealer they closed in 2009, Bruce Chevy which always had great customer reviews and put Carr Chevy on some sort of customer service probation that continues to this day.

My company gets their patrol cars serviced at Carr and once in a while, one of the sites I am at with a car I need to pickup/drop off there and for a while, they didn't change any filters on a oil change/air filter change and still charged us. GM kicked the service manager out once our company president, a diehard GM guy like Samarai, told GM that he will be switching his fleet over to the new Ford Taurus. GM then also on the cars with old filters free oil changes for a year, plus when we lost one of our Impalas in an accident, a huge deal on a one.
