actually, I can prove you wrong with at least four of the cars that i have owned. Be careful sticking your dick out with the above statement...Japanese cars die here faster.

well.... my 86 toyota 4x4 went 260k in 3 years- a $7 thermostat killed it when it stuck closed... and my 93 ford ranger went 190k in 12 years when a toyota camry got in my way....

91 Cavalier- drove it 165,000 miles in 3 years.
98 Cavalier- drove it 210,000 miles in about 3 years (eventually this car went 317,000 when it was totaled)

I don't need to give you any examples because Its common knowledge. I'm sure there's been a few american car exceptions, but overall American cars are shit. Coming from a guy whos owned a majority of American cars, there just not built like anything that's Japanese ( or European). Cars are how I make a living, and I see there part/build quality on a daily basis, and nothing holds up overall like an import

My wife drives a 99 BMW 323i e46 5 speed sedan. It has 250,000 miles on it, over the last 4 years since ive owned it approx 100k miles) I've changed; oil, belts, an idler pulley, one coil pack, ball joints and original alternator at 245k. Not to bad and it still has the orig. clutch and drives better than any 50k mile gm product.

why is it I have only had ONE Cavalier and ONE Lumina that was a rotbox? the rest have been fine.
my 85 Type 10 Hatchback was pretty ripe as was the 93 Luminator.

They really are. I've worked for Subaru, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Porsche, General Motors and a shop that fixed absolutely everything, I've owned about 20 Toyotas, and yeah, I'm sorry... American cars do suck for the most part. I don't think this needs to be the argument like we have on here every month, but I've definitely almost seen it all, and I've worked on a LOT of cars.
I mean, sure, most Toyotas have no sense of character whatsoever, they're about as exciting as a toaster oven, but I've done things to Toyotas that no other car short of a wartime Jeep would put up with, and most of these were in my daily driver... and never have to replace a wheel bearing, muffler strap or control arm bushings.
My VW Beetle at 650,000 km still drives like a new car, doesn't have a single squeak or rattle, and aside from maintenance stuff and a few minor repairs (The most expensive being a steering rack), drives like a new car. And it wasn't taken care of at all for the first half million km. My Jetta has 444,000 on it, still looks great, drives great, doesn't squeak or rattle... I just drove the thing to Florida and back without so much as a hiccup.
And then there's my parents' GMC Sierra... it's 6 years old, under 140,000 miles, the rockers are rusted out, it's had the rear brakes done 3 times, the dashboard looks like a christmas tree with all its warning lights, the engine ticks like a bastard, the tranny has a mind of its own, the doors sag, the wind noise is insane, the chrome is peeling off the bumpers, all the GMC logos fell off of the centre caps and the front wheel bearings need to be replaced every 2 years like clockwork. This truck has been meticulously maintained, always washed and never abused. And it's one of the ones built in Oshawa, so it's (supposed to be) one of the better ones! It's a joke... it's funny how upset my dad gets when he talks about what a piece of crap it is.

And then sometime in the 90s, they lost that spirit and it became:

And who knows what the cost is to repair.
We need to get back to the first set.

I'm going to be in the market for a new vehicle soon, so I'm looking at what's out there in my price range that isn't a shitbox & I actually enjoy driving.
Sad to say, but most domestic cars are off the list. I would love another Grand Am (or Pontiac in general), but I understand the quality just isn't that good. I'd be better off spending my money on a VW or something.
