So tell me why
< on 12/12/2012 9:03 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER ForumQuote
Why was the entire brake system on my mom's 2008 Chevrolet Colorado completely metal to metal at 30,000 miles?

Why did the mechanic at the Chevrolet dealer tell my Mom that that's about how long the brakes are supposed to last? And that this is pretty typical?

Most people were getting 20,000 miles or so on the stock Saturn Astra pads, but I have 76,000 on my original pads, and they are just now needing replacement. My honest guess is that it's a cost issue, so they really didn't care about what pads were installed, as long as they worked.

Of course, manufacturers want things to wear out so they will come back for work.

Personally, 30,000 miles on pads is what I consider to be fairly normal. I wouldn't expect the metal to metal contact that soon, but anything is possible. Do you know if the truck has an overactive traction control system?

Varies from driver to driver. Pads are softer these days so they eat faster.

That's about it for GM brakes... actually, she did fairly well at 30,000 miles.

I don't know why they can't make brakes that last, VW* pads/rotors seem to be done at about 150,000 km, where if I had a GM minivan in with 40,000 on it, it was a guaranteed brake job.

*not including the Routan, which needs rear brakes almost weekly. VW has actually stopped using Mopar brake parts on these and has come out with their own version now.

um Bandi, the front brakes on my Cobalt SS/SC went 95,000 miles... the rears had just been replaced at 105,000 miles. None of that shit. As for the Colorado incident, I have no fucking idea, but of course on this board it will be this:

GM's are shit
chevies are garbage
fucking domestic pieces of shit...

maybe it's because your mom is a brake rider? maybe you live in a hilly area? maybe the truck has other problems? who the fuck knows? maybe your mom should go buy a Honda Ridgeline... those have unicorns and rainbows that come with them. and they never brake and they're the most perfect vehicle to sanctify the earth with it's treadprint.

fuck i'm in a nasty mood today.

Really? Cool! I should go get one!

But seriously, read this:

Actually The honda ridge line is pretty fucking durable for what it is. My dad has about 400 000 km , on it. A front end collision, and all it's needed other than regular matinence is a power steering pump. and some trim pieces. It's suffered through old mining roads while urbexing, It's a good motherf***ing truck.

Also Leather, awesome sound system.

and unlike the gm version it doesn't feel like your driving a bowl of soup.

My dad uses a 2007 Ridgeline as a tow vehicle for his lawn service. He hasn't had to do a single thing to it outside of the maintenance listed in the manual. He jack knifed on the highway to avoid a car that pulled out in front of him, and he just rolls with the damage like it's a real truck. He doesn't put many miles on his trucks, but the few he puts on it are pretty hard. It's been more reliable than the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado he traded in when he bought the RL.

But it's not a real truck, real trucks are not front wheel drive. Period. Back to the brake issue... Maybe your mom drives with two feet.

While I like fwd pickups for the goof factor, it isn't ever going to be a true heavy duty truck. Not gonna see a ridgeline pulling a 5th wheel travel trailer. But for what most people use trucks for it's fine. I, I would kill it.
