GM pickups are notorious for rear disc brake issues, they usually last half as long as the fronts. I know my parents' truck has had a few sets of rears and has only had the fronts done once.

Also, VWs seem to wear about the rear brakes slightly quicker than the fronts.


Yeah seams like every one that comes in the shops rear rotors are rusted to hell.

Or those ATE grooved rotors with the funky pattern. They warp after about 30 revolutions.




the rear disc brake thing was something GM never did figure out on the Silverado's. I think it was after '10 or '11 they went back to a drum set-up.

The drums seem to work really well. And when they do wear out, it's like 25% of the cost.

rear discs on the Silverados were more or less for marketing.

I think the disc brakes that GM used came from Continetal, which explains a lot...

Not gonna lie... I was surprised (but not disappointed) to see rear drums on my '12 Silverado.

Supposedly, disc brakes have better braking force, dissapate heat better and are easier to service. For some reason, though, GM couldn't make them work on the back of the Silverado.

Honestly GM isn't the only one that's had trouble with this. My Mom's old Grand Cherokee, my '07 Accord, and a Subaru that was in the family all ate through two rears to one set of fronts. Oh, and my '91 Grand Prix.

Rear shoes will last forever though!

I remember GM N-bodies were harsh on brakes... Grand Am's, Malibus and whatever other variants out there ate through pads and rotors like they were free. What was weird was that my 07 Cobalt SS/SC had the brakes and rotors off the same year Malibu and I got over 100,000 miles out of them. In fact, when I changed them out, the rotors still weren't warped and the rear pads weren't even close to the rivets yet.

The NAPA rotors i put on the front of the SS after the factory set, well they were warped inside of 5,000 miles.
