It may provide a way to increase/decrease certain traits in a population, but typically, reducing the variety of traits and characteristics in a breeding population is harmful in the long run.

And besides, as I have said before, science could also very clearly tell you that trying to introduce eugenics into practice would result in what we as humans would interpret as a disaster (but it is important to note that science still has no opinion on the matter).

"Can we eliminate a genetic trait from the population?" is an entirely different question than "Should we?"

Religion often prevents us from having an intelligent discussion about the latter because religious institutions claim to be the only source of morality.

Consider stem cell research.

Science says it can benefit. There is evidence to prove this.

The church says we should not investigate this because it it "playing god" and there is a "soul" in the embryo from conception.

There is no evidence to prove these claims, but we are discouraged from having an honest debate about it since it is taboo to question someone's deeply held beliefs or faith.
