UE Wikipedia article needs some work!!!

This article could REALLY use some work:
http://en.wikipedi.../Urban_exploration

Apparently UE is also known as Urban Spelunking?? Can you imagine, "Urban Spelunking Resource"? I'm gonna start saying "US" instead of "UE." Apparently hostile squatters are one of the "most notable" risks inside abandoned buildings. Apparently, we, as a community, have come to a consensus that the catacombs under Paris are the holy grail of UE. I don't think I got that memo. Also, this makes us sound like a bunch of hardcore criminals:

"The nature of this activity presents various risks, including both physical danger and the possibility of arrest and punishment. Many, but not all, of the activities associated with Urban Exploration could be considered trespassing or other violations of local or regional laws."

Overall the article just feels really negative towards the hobby and it seems to exaggerate the risks, especially in relation to the law. It places very little emphasis on the motivations behind UEers or on our general code of ethics. It used to be way better than this.

This needs fixing!

You can thank this user for adding in a huge negative slant towards the article, under the guise of that it isn't "neutral."

I'll work with you on the article and clean it up when I get some free time. I'm on there as Seicer, so just leave me a note if you need help.

Found this in the saftey/legality part.

"In one incident, web-postings and photographs from the web-site Urban Exploration Resource were cited as evidence that explorers were trespassing in a closed prison in Northern Virginia. Users had posted specific details on entry points and how access to the disused facility posed no great difficulties"

Anybody know more about this?

Whether or not this actually DID happen...it is an *extremely* unusual case and it has no place in the Wikipedia article. Of course I'm preaching to the choir here but...let's fix this! If you, like me, are not comfortable with editing articles yourself, at least post in the talk page and speak your mind.

I don't really care how they define Urban explores. As long as we are separated from the rest, and known for respecting sites and only taking pictures. That part should really be stressed.

I notion to scribe the fact that Shiroi and his rowdy friends of no-gooders, constantly get drunk and high on cocaine in abandonments and then needlessly cause destruction.

The public has to be aware of this outrage.

IIRC that term was used before 'Urban Exploration' or 'Urban Spunktography' even came into common use.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

If anyone is interested in reading the article before the negative slant was added check out archive.org which keeps a nice history of everything the way it used to be. http://web.archive.../Urban_exploration

Wikipedia keeps an internal full history of edits and reverts which is probably quite a bit faster than archive and more accurate in that you can see IP addresses of people who have edited the page... http://en.wikipedi...ion&action=history

Yeah, I've seen you on there, Seicer. Thought you sounded familiar (I'm "SMC" on there).
The biggest problem with that article (and with the Cave Clan article, too, which I tried cleaning up/defending from deletion at one point) is that POV contributors keep using Wikipedia's "guidelines" as an excuse to maintain "neutrality"; this also means that genuine explorers trying to contribute meaningfully get reverted. That's Wikipedia for you, I guess.

Woah, I'm not included in the article anymore. I rather enjoyed the fact that I was the first name ever mentioned in it and how it stuck for years. There goes that then.

You can thank that one asshole for ruining the article. Slap a tag that says the article isn't neutral, but don't do anything to correct it or to assist in the discussions, and then I get reprimanded for removing the tag for lack of discussion (it is up to the editor who placed the tag to be forthcoming)...

Please remove the garbage or modify it in a way that is a little less negative.

Yes this does need some work. I've also noticed this article as strange in the past. Maybe add somethings about lonely chairs, wheelchairs, and poop.

Unless you're after some piece of neutral information like a scientific fact, treat Wikis like they are - a user-editable place where contrasting opinions are added and removed at the whim of some anonymous person. Take this info with a rock of salt. Know that the info you're reading could be heavily slanted in the direction of whoever wrote it last and that the next time you visit it'll say something different. It's not an encyclopedia, it's just another website where factual info and complete lies are posted. Sound familiar?

I see that someone went on there and deleted a few of the things that I referred to that sounded weird, and then those changes were reverted. It would be nice if we could just delete those things, but that's just going to get reverted. What might be better is to add some new stuff (with references!) that counters all of this anti-UE stuff. Just be sure to follow the guidelines and post stuff that won't be categorized as "original research"; in other words, cite your sources. Kudos to whoever went and just deleted that stuff! But unfortunately that's just not how Wikipedia works hence the reason why I didn't just delete that stuff myself.

A lot of Teachers won't let you use wiki as an source material in an essay. However MOST entries list their sources. And you can use THOSE in an essay.

And I love the wiki-history ... how else can I go back and read funny wikispam posts? A lot of Wikipedia vandalism is really funny ...

Another good question I have: why are ALL wiki-mods complete dicks? Seriously I've added real content with sources and stuff and they go back and delete it for no apparent reason.
It took me 4 separate edits to get the MSI Wind added to the netbook catagory a few months ago...

One of the worst things I've seen done by a Wikipedia sysop was unblocking a user who had: a) completely wrecked an article with POV for the better part of six months, b) been abusive toward several editors who fixed up his edits, and c) had eventually started doling out the odd real-life threat to a few people. Apparently the guy had "apologised" so all his sins were forgiven and he was allowed to return to "editing" after only a week on the naughty step.
That said, not all sysops are "bad people"; there are quite a few who are very helpful and realise themselves that Wikipedia's guidelines can be quite flawed at times.
