I don't see why any impartial, all-knowing wiki-editor would completely erase the section on ethics. Shouldn't that be one of the more important parts of the article? You could always cite infiltration.org as one of the sources.

QFT. Wikipedia's handy for getting a general idea about of certain (non-controversial) subjects, and tracking down source material. Parody wikis are more fun... at least they're upfront about being bullshit. [last edit 9/17/2008 8:08 AM by mixism - edited 1 times]

Yeah, I've seen you on there, Seicer. Thought you sounded familiar (I'm "SMC" on there). The biggest problem with that article (and with the Cave Clan article, too, which I tried cleaning up/defending from deletion at one point) is that POV contributors keep using Wikipedia's "guidelines" as an excuse to maintain "neutrality"; this also means that genuine explorers trying to contribute meaningfully get reverted. That's Wikipedia for you, I guess.

It's typically a very conservative company when it comes to communication and user control, but I've been forcing the thighs open for a few years now. Still this is almost being done under the radar, so I'd like to know about any kind of challenges I might expect in a corporate (hopefully non- flaming and trolling) environment.

Unfortunately, we've been running our corporate wiki through Sharepoint, which is a pain-in-the-ass at times to deal with. I don't think you'll have to deal with many challenges. MediaWiki is pretty open and straightforward to work with, and the only major issues I can see is people adding in non-work information and images, creating their userpages to resemble their MySpace profile and the like. Images should rarely be used unless it is of your own or are in Fair Use. How many are going to be using it?

Same in my company... *BARF* though we also have some just normal IT wiki's too. Normal non-IT people get Sharepoint. Sucks for them.

| | | Well, the starting group is only like 50 to 80 people. They've been using it in a lab install for a few months, but we're taking it to production now. I know that a lot of people want on it. We have a few thousand IT-ish people, which would be our primary users. Yeah, I put in SharePoint 2003 years ago and now am trying to migrate to a 5 server MOSS 2007 farm. We have like 10,000 users and 100 GB of data on SharePoint. It works pretty well for what it is, especially since we use other products to act as a portal and as a document repository. Wow. Those SharePoint wiki pages aren't really useful for more than the most basic of stuff. Sorry about that.

| | | In regards to the UE wiki entry... I don't deal with the wikipedia politics too much so I dont know. Instead of making minor edits to some sections that keep getting reverted by the assholes, instead would it work if we collaboratively re-wrote the entire article from scratch here (with citations and sources up the ass) and then overwrite whatever they have there? Of course they could still revert it back, but if we come up some something better with lots of citation it might work, right? I guess we'd just have to avoid any controversial topics or a subject that we can't quote to a book or reputable website. Can we just quote "all access" and some other books a bunch of times? I know people will say it will still get reverted, but that's BS. I'm down for a war. What are they going to do when all of UER monitors the wiki all day long and keeps reverting it back to our new article....that is unless someone actually makes a good edit to what we wrote. There's more of us that care about that wikipedia entry than there is people reverting it back all the time. Lets go to war. Even if they win, it will still suck for them.

To which I or someone else from UER quickly re-reverts to our new accurate article. Also, the main point I'm going for here is when we re-write it, it really has to be well done in Wiki standards so they can't add that needs citations and verifications BS. So when they revert, they are actually reverting from okay quality to shit quality. We'd only be able to win by offering up a better article that is fair for all readers.

Posted by shane_fromva Found this in the saftey/legality part. "In one incident, web-postings and photographs from the web-site Urban Exploration Resource were cited as evidence that explorers were trespassing in a closed prison in Northern Virginia. Users had posted specific details on entry points and how access to the disused facility posed no great difficulties" Anybody know more about this?

Really I don't think that happened, but I do know that I've been contacted by people in the press to talk about the prison before, as they came across me here. The security is too busy doing useless stuff to look on the internet and actually follow through with something. What a retarded quote..

| | | I think it would just get locked by an admin, and then no one would be able to make changes at all. In fact, even if the wrong person saw this thread on here, the article would likely get locked for a while. What we really need is just someone who understands Wikipedia guidelines or at least has the time to do some research on them. It is frustrating, but I think this is important for the community as a whole. Whether Wikipedia is reliable or not, it is used by a LOT of people. The Wikipedia UE article was my first introduction to the UE community (I was a UEer before that, I just didn't know it), and I don't think I'm the only one. Wikipedia is an incredible resource and, yes, it has its problems, but we have to deal with that and work around them. http://en.wikipedi...ies_and_guidelines http://en.wikipedi...a:List_of_policies
