| | | I just spent about $5 U.S. on something I think is very special, (drum roll..) A kit to upgrade my 2A Mag Light to L.E.D. The results are astounding. I could almost replace my 4D with 2A it's so damn bright now. I don't know if they make an up grade for bigger lights, but if they did, it would be worth it. The name of the company is Nite Ize, and you all should check it out. RyanB.

I have to agree the price of the Nite Ize will be returned to you after your first set of batteries they last about 10 times as long making this an excellent value and very little sacrifice in brightness they also make a tail cap switch thats much handier than a twist head The best LED drop in replacement for D size MAGs is called everLED its pricey but again youll save on batteries and its pretty damn bright too I guarantee youll be impressed

| | Streamlight ProPolymer 4AA Luxeon flashlight - Mag replacement <Reply # 15 on 3/31/2006 5:28 PM >
| | | I bought one recently and it is amazing. It's a truly unique flashlight. It's not available in common stores, but you will find one online for around $35 to $40 shipped. You can get it in black or bright yellow. Black is more discrete while the yellow makes it easier to find if you lose it in a pile of debris. Output wise, it plays side by side with a 4D Maglite. The Maglite is brighter when its on a fresh set of batteries, but with less than an hour of use it dims down quite a bit and at this point, the two flashlights are comparable in output. Also, if you manage to break it from normal use, Streamlight will replace it under lifetime warranty. This little thing packs a full size Maglite like performance in a sleek 7" long by 1.5" around body that weighs a mere half pound with batteries. This flashlight has an electronic regulation circuit that maintains full output for the entire useful life of the batteries and it is truly a unique feature. A set of alkaline batteries will give you about three and half hours and a freshly charged Energizer 2500mAh rechargeable AAs will give you almost five hours of use. The beam pattern is fixed and it is a very narrow spot light with a decent amount of side spill. The lack of adjustable focus is the only compromise you have to make over the Maglite. The price is rather steep at almost $40 USD, but us UE'ers tend to use our flashlights quite often and the big heavy D-cell batteries for Maglite is quite expensive. If you use it with rechargeable batteries, you'll easily break even on the higher initial price from not having to buy expensive D-cell batteries for the Maglite. On the left is the Streamlight ProPolymer 4AA Luxeon and the right is Maglite 4D with new batteries and the optional xenon bulb. The Maglite is brighter, but as the batteries weardown, this brightness won't last for long and a D-cell cost about $1 to $1.25 USD a piece in a 4 pack.
Size comparison. The Mag weighs about two pounds.

What's wrong with ordering online? I bought mine from a police, fire and rescue supply e-tailer. The throw is decent, but it's not quite as good as a 4D Maglite, CR123A powered tactical lights or a big heavy plastic flashlight that uses a 6V latern battery, but that's a small compromise for weighing only 8 oz and still getting almost five hours of runtime. It's probably one of the brightest AA powered Luxeon LED flashlight out there and this thing is quite tough. I have actually dropped it on cement a few times while it was turned on without any ill effect. Same drop would have surely killed the bulb in an incandescent flashlight. Five hours seem really weak compared to most other LED flashlights, but it really isn't. The other ones only get crazy long hours because the output dims as the batteries wear down. If five hours isn't quite enough for you, Streamlight makes the same spec brother that runs on 3 C cells.

| | | I just bought one of the LED upgrade for my mini-maglight. The darn thing would not apply enough pressure on the switch mechanism so it would frequently stay on even when fully tight. If this has happened to you, just insert a small plastic washer around the lead wires and that will push the switch down the extra little bit it takes...
