| | | What kind of budget do you expect to put into it? I personally prefer bulb-based flashlights, but there are also LEDs, and if you want to be "cheap" there are those lights you crank or shake that never need batteries (but are a SERIOUS pain in the ass). To start out...just get yourself a D-cell Maglite. Preferably the kind that uses maybe 2 or 3 batteries. Then carry an extra set of batteries in your pack, maybe a small LED flashlight or penlight in your pocket as a backup. You shouldn't need to worry about it too much.

| | | Yeah, just confuse him with nightvision. LOL! They're alot more affordable than they once were, but I think it's a safe bet that pumping $200 or more into a new hobby isn't necessary when a good flashlight shouldn't cost you even half that. Psst...wanna buy a Rolex? They keep good time when you're out doing UE.

| | | The best piece of advice to give, no matter what you see or read, do not fall prey to the "candlepower contest". All your flashlight needs to do, is illuminate. There are people who feel they have to have a handheld searchlight, or a massive vehicle modified headlight with a battery jury-rigged to run it. If you get too carried away, it will become less about exploration and more about what hot new gadget is in stores this week. Find something that works for you, not just because 15 people say it's the best thing ever made.

The Maglite is actually already set pretty close to the tightest focus in the beam comparison picture. Standard LED flashlights commonly use multiple small LEDs and collimation is hard, but this one uses a very bright single LED as a source and spot beam is pretty good.
|
ah yes but you dont always want that tight spot beam, sometimes you want it to flood, sometimes you want it somewhere in between, and sometimes you want to get it tight to look down a halway.

| | | By the way... http://www.action-lights.com They sell the ProPolymer series of Streamlights, and even have some with apparently more battery life than the 4AA.

| | | I carry a Surefire L2 while exploring, and just as part of my EDC. However, for someone just starting out, I suggest looking into the Inova line, as was previously mentioned. An Inova T2 is virtually indestructible, gives out a good amount of light, and gives constant regulated output for about 5 hours on a single pair of batteries. Just make sure you buy the batteries online, where they are significantly cheaper than any store.

| | | From the point of view of safety I find LED flashlights most effective as they provide a wide and even illumination of dangerous terrain where one must watch out for broken glass, nails etc...I carry two mini maglites at all times, one standard and the other modified with a pop in LED array which you can get here: http://www.niteize.com For serious illumination I use a 2 million candle power light...my kids love it 'cause it charges up glow in the dark stuff almost instantly!

According to flashlightreviews.com, the Streamlight ProPolymer Luxeon have much better throw and somewhat better total output. The battery life between the Inova T2 and Streamlight ProPolymer 4AA Luxeon are comparable. The big difference is that 5 hours on a charge of NiMH is heck of a lot more economical than 5 hours on a pair of lithium CR123. The Fenix L2P (2 AA) is also a good light. It is smaller than a Minimag and have nearly as much light output as the Streamlight, but runtime is only two hours cost about twice as much.

| | | I don't understand. The Streamlight ProPolymer 4AA Luxeon has an overall output rating of a very whimpy 23.50. Overall output is the amount of light comming out the front. http://www.flashli..._propolyluxeon.htm However, the Fenix is producing 31.50 for overall output. http://www.flashli.../fenix_l1t-l2t.htm 31.50/23.50= 1.34 That means it produces 34% more light. Plus the Fenix L2T is much smaller, such that it is easier to mouth carry if both hands are needed. I'd die laughing if I saw you mouth carrying a Streamlight ProPolymer 4AA... Another advantage, is you can carry two spare cells in a pocket. I cannot tell you how many times I've had NiMH Energizer cells go out to lunch on me.
Another nice thing is that flashlights with higher throw numbers and lower overall output numbers, have a brighter hotspot, which ruins your night vision even more. Think of it like blinding you. It also makes it harder for finding things. The Fenix L2P has a larger and less dramatic hotspot, which blinds you less, and helps you recognize things better at night. This is due to a more even, and uniform lighting field.
If you need to see a football field away, you need throw, and neither one of these lights are going to do much at all at those distances.
