I think there's a picture of the OMD EM1 getting showered on.

So, that's good for weather sealing.

No mention of the Sony A7 series yet? Mirrorless full-frame.... Maybe not quite as compact as you might want though?

When my Canon 6D craps out, I may go in this direction, with adapters for my existing lenses.

I would love the A7, a great camera from everything I've heard about it. Just too expensive for me right now.

I have the Sony a5100, which I've been enjoying.

I've gotten decent results in caves and drains as well as above ground. I like the portability of being able to stick it in a small pelican case at the bottom of my bag and not having to worry about it. I like that I can pair it up to my phone to use as a remote.

It's got a LOT going for it for convenience and ease of use, but I do still lug the 5Dii around when I don't want to worry about whether I'll get the shot or not. (I expect I need to force myself to practice more.)

I've been eyeing up a used fujifilm X-100 at my local camera shop. $350 isn't too bad. it is missing wifi though. i would like a mirrorless to carry around for everyday shots. I could still get an eye-fi card and i suppose. it would be great for instant editing and uploading while on the go. It's als a fixed lens. the Fujifilm X-TI looks amazing but way out of my price range. it'd be different if i wasn't already invested in a Nikon setup.

Hi wonderful (and highly sarcastic) people of UER. I am at a little bit of a dilemma. I would really like a small camera (mostly for UER) for times when I don't want to bring my DSLR with me or for opportunistic explores because I'm far more likely to have a small camera on me. As the title suggests I'm after a mirrrorless camera, rather than a compact (although I'm possibly open to suggestions of compacts with full manual controls and manual focusing if such a thing exists).

I've been looking at quite a few and I think have narrowed it down to the fuji x100 series, and the Oly OMD EM5/10. I'm hoping someone out there has used at least one, and preferably both for exploring and has some actual feedback.

Caveats: I use my DSLRs in manual, and I will be doing the same with these. I will be going to a lot of underground places where there is no natural light, and some pretty wet places too.

Any real world advice appreciated.

You should check this page out:

What do you value? Every camera except DSLRs is mirrorless, but when people say mirrorless, they mean larger than common sensor compact camera with exchangeable removable lens. Compact cameras are faster and it's not uncommon to find something that can do the standard DSLR kit lens zoom range and have the ability to stay at F/2.8. You need an expensive lens to match this with a DSLR. I would seriously take a look at "bridge camera". They call it something in between P&S and DSLR, but it isn't. It does something neither can readily do, which is super long zoom in a reasonably portable unit. Mega zoom cameras are incredibly useful for UE and they tend to have all manual settings. (aperture, shutter, focus, ISO)

There's a dude in the crane, and my camera's only F/3.5 400mm equivalent. Today, you can get one that goes up about 3-4 times that. How can you say that this ability isn't useful for UE?

My son has the Nikon J1 with the 10-30 mm lens. It has some pretty good features, but it does lack good long exposure settings. For UE, I would imagine you could circumvent that with a good hand torch, but light painting might be out of the equation. It's a good grab and go camera though, as he usually takes his with us on trips more than I do.

Huh? It's there in manual mode. Timed to 30 seconds which is comparable to DSLRs and up to 2 minutes with bulb. That's not good enough for you? The user interface is terrible though. It's such a pain to go back between manual and automatic on this thing.

I've been attempting a lot of night photography, so two minutes is a starting point for me. For a grab and go camera its pretty good though.

What do you normally do? You having noise issues past about a minute or so with digital in general. I haven't found 30 second too limiting in most cases.

I'm just now trying long exposure night pics, so I am no expert by any measure. The only things I can give you for a starting point are:

1. Manual focus, or auto focus on a laser pointer dot, then switch to manual.
2. Bulb mode, with a remote to open and close the shutter.
3. Low ISO. Even 300 ISO looks like crap in low light. I have many crappy pics to prove it.
4. Turn on Exposure comp. From my limited understanding, this creates a second dark frame to eliminate to hot pixels that long exposures cause.

Lastly, Lost America has a great instructional book on light painting and general night photography. I have not bought it yet, since I prefer to make all of my own stupid mistakes first : )

Sony a6000 I love mine, it went all around Europe with me, plus has a great range of available adapters to use older glass.

My Review on the Camera

Using a Konica Henxanon AR 35mm f/2.8 lens on a Fotodiox adapter

Using the Stock 16-50mm lens, this suffers from a bit of distortion at the 16mm and 50mm marks but Lightroom as a built in profile to correct.

And using a Leica 50mm f/2 lens on a Fotodiox adapter
